Not Diagnosed but Concerned + High Risk Women, Created: Jun 25, 2007 03:20 pm
Are Dense Breasts High Risk?I have a small amount of density in one breast. Does that make me high risk? I'm confused with everything I read. Some say yes, some say no. Do they mean very dense breasts? I've also read that my density should go away after menopause? Has anyone ever had some dense tissue in their breast that went away?

Waiting for an MRIHi Peggy~
Just this past April I had a MRI. The only reason I had one was because I usually come in every 6 months to see my Dr. because I have some density in my left breast and my Dr. wanted to have an MRI done so I could come in once a year like most folks. Anyways, for my MRI they had me lie face down on a table. There is a place for your breasts to hang down (I know that sounds weird). They put an IV in me that inject a substance that helps show anything on the MRI film. It takes about 45 minutes. It is loud (I got to wear headphones and listen to music) and I remember that I was pretty warm. You also have to lie still. It really isn't as bad as it may sound. The worst part for me was waiting for the results! Usually my Dr. gets back to me in a few days, but of course this time she was at a conference so I had to wait almost 2 weeks to hear back. thanks goodness everything was fine. I was glad to have it done. It gave me a piece of mind knowing nothing was there. Have you called your Dr. to ask why they want an MRI? Usually after a mammogram, if there are questions, they do an ultrasound or take more mammogram pictures. I would also check with your insurance to make sure they will pay for it. MRI's are really expensive. I hope that answered some of your questions about MRI's. I don't usually come to this site, but decided to stop by today. I'm glad I did. So many women have helped me on this site when I was in the waiting mode. I hope I have helped you a little! I know it easier said then done, but try not to worry. As you have probably read, 80% of suspicious findings are nothing to worry about. |

Nipple QuestioinI apologize for this question since it doesn't have to do with BC althougth I'm one of those people who have dense breasts and had a MRI in April just so I wouldn't have to come back every 6 months so I understand all the anxiety that goes along with the testing we all have to endure.
Anyways, is it normal for one nipple to be more erect than the other nipple? I think I'm more aware of my breasts since I've been through the mammogram, ultrasound, MRI saga the last month. For some reason I've just noticed that my left nipple is never as erect as my right nipple. Maybe it has always been this way or could this be due to perimenopause? I've looked on line but can't find anything. As I said, this maynot be the place to ask, but I can't seem to find any website site or chat room for women with general breast questions. Thanks for any response. |

Mammogram showed dense area??Hey Bridgett~
Aren't dense breasts fun? I'm only 43 and always have to have additional pictures taken and usually an ultra sound of my dense breast (actually my left is more dense then the right). At my last visit, my breast surgeon had me get a MRI just so they could have a clear picture of my breasts and so I didn't have to come in every 6 months for a mammogram. I know an MRI isn't possible for everyone, but I know they are recommending it for dense breast tissue and it does get you a peace of mind know that nothing is hiding in the dense tissue. Anyways, all of that say what your going through is normal. Actually, a friend of my mom's who is in her 60's still has dense breat tissue and just recently went from having a mammogram every 6 months to once a year. As I tell other women with dense breast....hopefully some day my breasts will "smarten" up and become less dense as I get closer to menopause....not that I'm looking forward to that! Take care! |

really need adviceHi Tammi~ So are you saying that the Dr. can't find anything in either breast now or is he just not concerned about the left breast anymore?
If your not comfortable with what your hearing, I would go in and talk to your dr. Tell her even though your young, you want everything tested just so you have a peace of mind. It seems to me your dr. would understand that. Let us know what happens. |

New here.It is normal to have more pictures taken if you have lumpy or dense breasts. I had to have the same thing done and my dr. did an MRI because of my dense breast tissue. It seems like I was constantly waiting between each test and during that time, my shoulder and armpit kept bothering me which made me more freaked out. After I got the all clear, my aches went away. So, all of that to say that anxiety can really do a number on your body. Try to not let it get to you. I will be praying that time passes quickly and your done and over with all of this with good results.

needle biopsy tomorrowI agree with the other comments. I didn't think it was bad at all. Actually, I was surprised at how painless it really was! Just a little pinch and then I felt nothing! You will be fine. Try to relax if you can!
I will say a prayer for you tomorrow! Let us know how it goes! |

More tests tomorrowWomen who have lumpy or dense breasts usually get called back. This is a good thing! Sounds like your radiologist is just making sure he is comfortable with what he is seeing. I have dense breast tissue and always have to go back for extra pictures and usually an ultrasound. A friend of my mom's has had to have additional pictures for the last 20 years every time she goes in!

pannyIt's really sad that you let fear rule your life, but you are an adult and make your own choices and you know what is best for your future since you spent all weekend researching. I'm not sure what else anyone can say to you and there is only so much encouragement these ladies can give you. I agree with the previous post. I hope this isn't a hoax and that these caring women haven't wasted time trying to help you.

Need help with results, pleaseI just had an MRI because I have such dense breasts. Even though waiting for the results really was not fun at all, having my Dr tell me everything looked great and she would see me in a year (instead of every six months) made for a great 43rd birthday! Get an MRI...that along with an ultra sound and digital mammogram will keep you from always worrying about the "what if's"....BUT do check with your insurance to make sure you are covered for it. They are spendy.

no bc but breast painHmmm. good question. I didn't have any pain with mine, except after the biopsy. Because mine was so small, the Dr. just removed the entire thing. Have you tried taking some Advil?

Fiberadenoma...I had a small one removed last year. I read on Dr. Susan Love's website and according to her, these do not mean you will get BC. They are just annoying little things. I've also read that they can come come back or you many never get another one. Hope that helps.

Is it normal to see lymph nodes on mammography?I also have dense breasts and just had a MRI to make sure nothing small was hiding. My MRI came back normal and even though it took over a week to get the results, I'm happy I had it done. I would recommend that you get a digital mammogram and maybe an MRI wtih dense breasts.

I don't know how I feel, except tiredI just went through 2 months of waiting for results. Waiting is the worst. I'm happy to say that my results were all benign and I think you will find that most lumps are benign. These discussion boards are wonderful and full of support for you, but try to remember that most people on here do have BC. The one's who dont, don't really hang out here so you don't get to hear their stories. The reason I'm here is that I want to support women who are in the "waiting" period because I know how stressfull it can be.
I know there is nothing I can say to make you feel less stressed, but try to remember that just because you feel a lump, it doesnt mean you have BC. You are fine until you are told otherwise. |

WAiting GameI don't know if I want to ask this or not, but here the bottom line:
Breast MRI last Tuesday (not checking out anything, just dense breast tissue and my DR. had it done so I could come back in a year instead of 6 months) Called on Friday of last week, they didn't have my results yet. Called Monday of this week, didn't have my results yet, but they were going to call and get them. Called yesterday, the file is sitting on the Dr.'s desk and it is flagged for her to call me with the results. I ask the receptionist if she can tell me anything and she says the Dr. will look at the chart and then either she or the Dr. will call. No one called. Today: It's 1:00 in the afternoon here. No call yet. If there was something serious, why she have called by now? I'm getting very concerned. The thoughts running through my mind are going from calm to a major freak out. |

any suggestions for sensitivity?I know when I have a vacuum assisted biopsy, my breast was so sore and I had a lot of bruising. It seemed to last for a couple of week. I would say to call your dr. to see if there is anything else you can do. I'm also sure you will get some advice from the wise women on this board.

worriedawww waiting...the worst part!
I had a vaccumm biopsy last year (it turned out to be a fibroad)and I guess I'm lucky because mine didn't hurt. I did have alot of bleeding and had to have the bandages and all that. Be prepared for bruising. My breast turned every shade of color that there is and it took quite a while for it to go away. They also put a marker in. The weird thing about that was a few days after they had put it in, my joints really hurt in my knees for a week or so. Lets pray that you will get your results in a few days and not have to wait a whole week! Take care of yourself! |
