Presidential debates on ABC right now-both parties

I'm a leftie at heart, and haven't made up my mind between Obama and Hillary.   I don't FEEL connected to either of them, and I have always felt a bit turned off by Hill's personality ( but NOT by her stance on most issues, except her initial take on Iraq).

I would really like to hear how people are distinguishing between the two of them on policy issues.  I want to vote on substance, not just style. Thanks.

Did anyone develop allergies AFTER chemo?

P.S. Beth, you dust your ceiling fans? I'm impressed. I have a couple of decades of dust up there, and I never thought to actually do anything about it.

Did anyone develop allergies AFTER chemo?

Deja vu on this conversation (I asked everyone about sinus pain last year, and you made me feel better by validating the situation). YES to all of the above.  Last spring/early summer, I had a sinus headache and stuffiness that lasted for months.  It terrified me.  I started to get anxious, dissociated, dizzy because I was obsessing about my sinuses.  It felt like one of my sinuses was ALWAYS plugged, but which one it was jumped around.  One day it would be near the left brow, the next day the right brow, then the bridge of my nose.  My eyes have been tearing and red for two years now, and it's embarassing to go into a shop and watch my eyes (and nose) drip all over the merchandise.  And I'm always swabbing at myself with my gloved hand, like a 5 year old with a runny nose.  Horrible.  Some of this I've attributed to the AIs, rather than the chemo, simply because I've assumed that my sinuses dried up, like all the other canals.  Also, my eyes have been super light-sensitive.  In the evening, I can't tolerate the tv if a light is on.  And if I go outside and my eyes adjust to the dark, then I feel blinded by neon signs or headlights.

Thank you for starting this thread.  I'm still  hoping these SEs are temporary and that one day they'll abate.

crease-like scar

Anyone have a scar that's a little crease-like, sort of like a wrinkle? I feel that one of my scars will still be visible even when fully faded, because it forms a little crease.  It's a horizontal mast.scar, above the nip.  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

BRCA2

Hi bkruse,

I am also BRCA2 and had an oopherectomy last year.  I found the menopausal symptoms most severe PRIOR to my ooph., when I was on chemo and then, briefly, on tamoxophen.  After the ooph, I switched too AI meds, and am currently on femara.  My major side effect is pain in my feet when I stand too long or wear any kind of heel.  I never had this before, so I know it's directly related to the AI.

My muscle tone isn't as good as it was before the ooph, but I also don't exercise as aggressively or as often, especially since I am still having reconstruction surgeries (just had nips) that take me away from the gym

The psychological relief from having had this surgery is great.  In fact, hearing that my ovaries were ok (no cancer) was the largest relief I have had since this ordeal began.

I'm worried about my skin looking older, but the reality is that it still looks ok.  Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Your favorite clothes after DIEP

Hi, You've received lots of great suggestions, here's two more:

1. Smuggle home some hospital robes (probably ok with the nurses -- they helped me round them up).  They're comfy and dispensable if your oozy in the beginning.

2.  Ask the tall people in your life for their OLD t-shirts.  My dad is 6'3", and I relieved him of 10+ year old, stained t-shirts, where you can barely read the words anymore.  they're super soft and I wear them around the house still.

Good luck to you!

I'm not going to let PINK get to me this year!

OCTOBER is breast cancer awareness month???  I can't believe it's not September, with all the pinkiness around.  Does anyone know if Duane Reade (huge drug store chain) is doing a BC thing? I recently received a pink shopping bag from them, and saw that they put up a pink awning on one of their stores? I couldn't figure out if they were just saving money and using a single-color image on their bag rather than the usual blue and red.

And, for NYers out there, Zabars has a whole window display of pink appliances. Pink Kitchenette mixers, blenders, LaCrueset stuff. The color  like Love's Babyfresh products from the 70s; I can't imagine someone from these parts with a baby pink kitchen appliances.

Do any of you have a reaction to the dancing pink ladies when you get arimidex mail? I live in an apartment building, and the postman leaves the arimidex mailers on top of the mailbox area.  (I still get arimidex mail, even though I've switched to Femara.)  Anyway, it seems like a loss of privacy for me to have my whole building see me get envelopes covered with dancing pink ladies.  I'm embarassed that I care -- I know I should be cool with this -- but I do.

I still like pink, in context -- just not on my LeCrueset saucepans.

Getting Nipples

Did nips today!

Of course I haven't seen them yet, but am getting bandages (and under bandages, some sort of hard, little devices) off next wednesday.  Was told I could shower, but to avoid getting the bandages wet -- you know, the I don't-want-to-get-my-hair-wet dunk and dive.  Here's the weirdest part -- i felt GREAT after the surgery, even though I also had a boob revision (moved more into the middle of the chest from the armpit). And I mean GREAT. Must have been the drugs. Have a prescription for pain killer, but haven't used it yet. Getting a minor anesthesia hangover, which I hope will be gone tomorrow.  So my PS uses a twisty technique: imagine a seagull flying in a picture, and then imagine one wing being twisted one way into a little swirl, and the other being twisted around it the other way. Evidentally PS makes a sort of seagull shaped cut.  HUH? I know, but that's the picture that was drawn for me of the technique.  Anyway, if anyone is nervous, consider this a pep talk. I feel better than fine!

Femara after Arimidex.

I just asked my onc  (major cancer center in nyc) about this yesterday, and he looked over my chart and told me what he would recommend for me individually -- so I guess there's not a policy out there and the oncs have to weigh our individual factors.  In my case, he said that he would probably pull me after 5 years, but, of course  he mentioned that more research is being done. (I'm stage 1, but it was aggressive and also BRCA2).  I figure I'm going to call the shots at that point and make an informed decision with him.

Colonoscopy prep

Ok, my last comment:
One is, you'll know when you are clean during the prep because, as a friend put it, "you start to pee out of your ass."

Colonoscopy prep

ooops -- i mean the colon prep was NOT the sweaty, crampy kind of "going"

Ambien -- i've taken it everynight since my bc diagnosis, including the night before the  colonoscopy. no problem.

Colonoscopy prep

Hi Fitchik. Here's some more support for the colon prep (you always give me lots of great support!).  I had to do it twice this past year -- once for ooph and once for colonoscopy.  Both times I thought it was a much better experience than your typical stomach ache (i.e., diarrhea (sp?), spoiled food  , or using laxatives for constipation).  Yes, you GO alot, but it was that crampy, sweaty, horrible kind of going.  Everything came out a lot faster and with much less wear and tear.

I had lots of that air/gas AFTER the colonoscopy and felt too yechy to go back to work. I had one polyp removed and -- probably because I'm BRCA2 -- will be going back in a year for another colonoscopy. All in all, though, I'm SOOO glad I did it. I didn't expect to have a polyp, but since I did, I'm sooo relieved that it's gone.

Good luck Fitchik!

Revision following failed bilateral TRAM?

Yes, there's light at the end of the tunnel!
I'm another failed flap girl. I had bilat feb.27, 2006 (and additional surgery to save the flap Feb 28and March 1) , but the right side was necrotic and the tissue used had to be removed. In Sept. 2006 I had an expander put in on that side and had exchange in March 2007. During exchange I also had a small implant put in on the left side to change it's Mt.St. Helena's shape. Nips and a minor revision to go!
Now, having done all sorts of surgeries I'm finally getting where I need to be. I'm glad you have a PS who will work with you: they shouldn't quit until you're both happy with the results.

The truth about wigs

Here's another approach, which worked for me. I kept my hair long and matched it to my new wig, which I purchased before my hair started falling out. I met with the wig stylist a couple of times to pick the color and trim. Before the major fall-out I got buzzed, left the wig shop with the wig on, and wore long hair (wig) for another year. I know, it's a long time, but I waited til summer (a month or so ago) to take the long wig off, and have had my own hair (2-3 inches long) styled. So, it just looks like I just NOW got a haircut. Nobody identified the wig stage except my friends, who knew what was going on. I bought an expensive wig, but it was worth it cause I kept in on until I could work with my hair.
I LOVED my hates with hair. I wore the regular one that you wear with a bandana or hat (I used bandanas) ALL the time last summer. So Keith Richards/Rhoda. Loved it. I also bought the swimming one and the baseball hat one for the gym.
The one thing I didn't use was an acrylic wig I bought, which was so super shiny that it didn't look like my hair.
Good luck everyone.

beauty tips, anyone?

Well, I'm one week past my first restylane and there's no bruising anymore. The effects are subtle, but positive (just as I hoped). Can you tell me more about Sculptra? does it help with crepiness and bags under the eyes? Any idea how it compares to restylane in terms of price, side effects, procedures, etc.
btw, I'm using a derm for this stuff, not my boob p.s. She seems to be slightly more into precision.

beauty tips, anyone?

The derm who gave it to me was referred by my onc, and she knows my story. I don't think it's particularly unsafe, cancer-wise. But really, I try not to be too paranoid. I use nutrisweet all the time, and stuff like that.

estrogen cream

My gyn-onc, who did ooph, is also a premarin fan (and well-known Ovarian Cancer specialist). I was referred to him cause I'm BRCA2+. He would like me to use just a little premarin, say, a large dab once a week, because he thinks I can LIMIT the amount more than an estring. My regular onc, for breast cancer, said it really is contraindicated with an AI, but would be ok with tamox. So, as I'm on an AI, I pretty much resist using the premarin(sometimes I use a miniscule dab if things are really dry). Susan Love in her book also suggests using small dabs. It's extremely confusing. Right now I'm intrigued by the idea of testosterone cream, as my testos. is extremely low and I have no libido. Does anyone use it?
