Friends? What friends??It's remarkable that some total strangers have been more supportive than family of so-called "close" friends. A lot of it stems from fear. Women are afraid that it could happen to them as well and that scares them. Get your support where you can. This board was so helpful. Catherine |

Rads not recommended after lumpectomy?Hi I also had DCIS (lumpectomy) with no radiation and no tamoxifen. It's been five years since my diagnosis and I'm doing fine. Catherine |

Wire Guided LumpectomyHi Rafaela, I had the lumpectomy/wire localization done on a Friday and was back at work by Monday. It wasn't bad at all. Good luck! Catherine |

Under/over treatment for DCIS?I was diagnosed with DCIS five years ago and chose a lumpectomy. I did not need radiation as it was such a small area. I am fine and was very happy to have the lumpectomy vs. the mastectomy, but it is a personal decision. Good luck! Catherine |

Wire Guided LumpectomyHello, I had this procedure about five years ago. It actually sounds a lot worse than it is. They give you a shot of lidocaine and insert a very fine wire. It was less painful than a regular mammogram. They use the wire to locate the area of concern during surgery. Hang in there! It's not bad at all. Catherine |

Treated DCIS - Pre-existing Condition? When I was first diagnosed with DCIS I asked the same question. My company's insurance broker told me that group (company) insurance policies cannot discriminate for pre-existing conditions. If you are looking for individual coverage, it could be difficult to obtain. Double-check with the carrier to be sure, but that made me feel a lot better. Catherine |

What treatment/reconstruction?I was diagnosed with DCIS almost five years ago. It was a small area, so I was happy to have a lumpectomy. I didn't even need radiation. My aunt also had DCIS, about ten years before me. She insisted on a double mastectomy for her peace of mind. So it's really a personal decision, based on recommendations from your doctor. Good luck with your decision. I know it's not easy. Catherine |

Going without "made in China"Rocktobermom, that is terrible about Target. I had a problem returning a defective phone to Best Buy. The phone could not be programmed and never worked. I took it back but they were giving me a hard time because I didn't have the box or booklet. They tried to charge a $10 restocking fee. The phone cost $22 so I told them that was highway robbery. I finally said, "Give me a replacement". I don't need the booklet or the box and that worked. Still very aggravating when the product was defective and had been purchased a week previously. I had the receipt. Catherine |

Mother & Sisters with Breast Cancer? My mother never had breast cancer but two aunts and both my grandmothers got it. Even though I have a history of breast cancer in my family, I was shocked when I was diagnosed with DCIS. Catherine |

Any long term lumpectomy survivors?Jpann, I like your motto. Very appropriate. It's nearly five years since my lumpectomy and I'm doing fine. Catherine |

doc wants another look at one breastA lot of times they just want additional views to be thorough. It doesn't mean that it's definitely bad news. The waiting is the worst. 80% of all calcifications are nothing, so try not to panic. Catherine |

Stereotactic vs. wire guided excisional biopsy?Hello, I had a stereotactic biopsy approx. five years ago. My surgeon didn't give me a choice. It actually sounds much worse than it is. They numb the area with lidocaine and shoot a little "gun" machine in. It feels like a rubberband snapping when the thing goes inside. Then it rotates and takes tissue samples. Done correctly the surgeon can get the DCIS during the biopsy. They do a lumpectomy or mastectomy just to be sure. Catherine |

Old Movies and Favorite BooksI've always been an avid reader too. I used to sit outside on the steps as well. My favorite books are "Gone With the Wind", "Rebecca" and "Wuthering Heights. I love those films too plus most Hitchcock films, "Charade", Rock Hudson/Doris Day films - so silly but funny too. Catherine |

Old Movies and Favorite BooksAnneshirley, I had to laugh, because I saw both of these films recently. Our library has a series of films and it's always a lot of fun to be exposed to older films. They had "screwball comedies", "My Fair Lady's London", Oscar winners and losers and a Hitchcock series. I love it! They also have new releases and it's a great way to see the films for free. cat scanThat's great news. I also had elevated liver enzymes. That can be caused by medication too, like Tylenol. Someone recommended taking Milk Thistle (herbal tablets) and that worked great for me as well as my mother-in-law. Catherine |

Reach To RecoveryMy grandmother volunteered for this group when she worked at Ravenswood Hospital. She thought it was great. One patient said to Gram, "I can tell that you've never had a sick day in your life." Gram told her about her mastectomy and said it really seemed to make a difference to the woman. Catherine |
