Zometa

Hey there! I posted fourth from the top on this thread and thought that I should check back in. I did a "reclast" infusion instead (to get it covered) the oncologist expects the outcome to be the same as it would be with Zometa. I will do it every six months instead to get the effect we are hoping for. Unlike Carolupa's oncologist, mine was pretty darn excited about the study from early June and was happy that I was ready to sign up.

I have definitely noticed that my joints are achier than they were before from just the Arimidex.  It has been two weeks and I am hoping that they will calm down soon.

Can't really address the clinical trials or anything like that.  I am trusting the oncologist on this one, he hasn't let me down in two years. He was very clear about religiously having the six month cleanings and paying good attention to dental hygiene. I have some siginificant osteoporosis, so I would be taking something for it one way or the other.

The Brand New Respectful Presidential Campaign Thread

Also a few hours ago :

"Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on Chicago's South Side. ......the move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger's racially charged comments about Sen. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night." CBS2 - Chicago

The Brand New Respectful Presidential Campaign Thread

Ten minutes ago (according to the AP):

"Hillary Rodham Clinton told colleagues Tuesday she would consider joining Barack Obama as his running mate, and advisers said she was withholding a formal departure from the race partly to use her remaining leverage to press for a spot on the ticket.

On a conference call with other New York lawmakers, Clinton, a New York senator, said she was willing to become Obama's vice presidential nominee if it would help Democrats win the White House, according to a participant who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to speak for Clinton."

Zometa

I received the info from the study yesterday, the day before my six month onc visit this morning. My doc was amazed that I knew about it, as he was in Chicago when they reported the results of the study this past wknd. Sometimes timing is everything, isn't it ladies?

I also coincidentally received not so great results from my bone density scan, so everything is falling into place for me to receive the Zometa. He told me that he will put his people right on the case with insurance to see what will be covered of the average $1200 per infusion cost.  Surprised He said that it might take a little doing and a little time.

He also wants to check my kidney function, as Zometa goes through the kidneys, before the first infusion.

I am pretty darn excited about being able to do this infusion as opposed to the once a week tablet like Fosemax.  The results of the study show a remarkable decrease in bone mets in patients who do the Zometa therapy.

Fingers crossed that some of this gets covered.

PS: Maybe your vacationing doc is in Chicago at the convention!

Quitting Hormone Therapy

Best wishes Joan! Your post was about the best thing I have read in a while. I have been struggling with SE's at 15 months into Arimidex. (This Illinois winter ain't helping - I miss my Philadelphia!) I am taking this thing one day at a time and resisting the urge to toss the bottle at least once a week. I know for damn sure it is too soon to quit. But I also know, that I will truly know when it is time.

Hope you don't leave the boards. I have always enjoyed reading your stuff all the way back to my beginnings here. I will continue to watch for your progress as you get your life back to yourself.

All the best,

Tattoos - DONE!

Hey Felecia!

I am one of those that Dotti is referring to...on the fence about skipping the nipple. You give me hope, girl!

It has been a while but thumbs up for Genarlow and Go Owls!!

hot flashes

Since you brought it up, I too take one 300 mg. Neurontin at bedtime, but I am on my last bottle. I think that the onc thought the flashes would be gone by now.  I am in year two of Arimidex. Will these hot flashes ever go away?

Skipping the nipple?

Mary, your comment helped a lot. I am so on the fence. I only had a mast on one side so the reconstructed side is flatter than the other augmented side. Not complaining, just saying. PS said that the nipple won't help that though.

Do they numb it for the later, tattoo portion of the program??

Skipping the nipple?

Damn, I just love you girls! Thank you for all your thoughtful, heartfelt and sometimes hilarious responses. It is almost two years since I was diagnosed and you guys have pulled me thru the rough spots so often. (Jane I understand you not volunteering for anything if you just finished chemo. Girl, you take a break!)

My PS looked a little disappointed yesterday that I didn't want to see it all the way through, but left the door wide open if I ever chose to come back and have the nipple done. I gotta tell you that some of these responses have really given me a lot to think about and some incentive to call him up and make the appt.

Dotti, I was thinking about mirrors in the bathroom I am redoing. Maybe I need to rethink that.

As always, you girls didn't let me down! Thanks. You are all amazing.

Skipping the nipple?

Reconstruction is done, except for the nipple prodedure and tattoo.

Seriously, kids, I am thinking of skipping the nipple. How many of you have done this, and is there anyone who regrets it? Any thoughts?

lopsided

Long ago and far away, I used to wear bikinis. My BC weight gain has pretty much eliminated that possiblity, so I had a moment of silence and then took the half cup paddings out of the bras and I tuck them into my bra whenever I need to even things out.

Dancing with the Stars

That little Mel B. Her face had a hundred expressions under that spotlight. I really wanted a woman to win this time, and she sure deserved it. The championsip was dead even.

Not too sure about the "Dance Wars". Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.  Undecided

Just wanted to say thank you

Adding my thanks to all of you and Dr. Weiss as well.

I wrote to the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and requested that they have Dr. Weiss on as a guest. I would love to see her interviewed. Maybe if you think of it when you are at Oprah.com??

What to wear home?

Thank you all! I am back and none the worse for the wear. I had a delayed bout of nausea from the anesthesia, but other than that am doing fine.

My surgeon sent me home in the sports type bra that Sheila described. They accidentally gave me two, so I always have a clean one.

I like my new set. Just a little bigger than the old ones and way perkier. I was SO afraid that I would be disappointed and was glad that I liked them. My husband had quite the smile when we took the bandages off this morning :)

Another hurtle overcome.

Dancing with the Stars

I was seriously shocked by Sabrina getting kicked off! I sort of figured that she probably grew up with dancing lessons her whole life, but ballroom is different right? Still, was she disliked by people? And isn't her poor dance partner SO in love with her?

Sure was surprising!

What to wear home?

Thanks! I got this whole packet from him and no where does it say what to wear. I thought that tight might be good for holding things together but uncomfortable if there are stitiches.

What to wear home?

Exchange surgery is tomorrow morning - augmentation on one side, exchange the expander on the other (PLUS taking the damn port out!) Anyway, what should I plan on wearing home? Loose fit or tight fit?

Recuperation after exchange?

My long awaited exchange is this Wednesday. The docs made me wait until all the chemo and herceptin was over, and the port was ready to come out before they would schedule exchange and augmentation on the other side. (15 months in all.) So it all gets done this week.

Going to Philly to visit my family on November 13th.  Sounds like I should be in excellent shape for that trip. (I was starting to get a little nervous).

Thanks!

2nd surgery

I had a lump plus DCIS. First surgery, got the lump but no clean margins on the DCIS, sentinel node biopsy at that time too. Sentinels were positive, rest were clear. That lymph node stuff is a pain, as D1 said.

Second time, we went for the whole tamale and did the mastectomy in order to get those clear margins.  Was ER+PR+her2/neu+. Glad that we did the mastectomy. I never have to worry about that DCIS again!

Consider getting thru these treatments and finding out precisely what you have going on, then worry about your course of treatment. There is a ton of info on here for you when you have to start to worry about that stuff. It is stressful enough getting thru the path reports and possibly two surgeries.

We are here for you.............it is all doable.

For what it's worth.....

Chemo both before AND after surgery?

Never be afraid to bring a pad and paper with your questions and write down their answers. It is so great to be able to go back and look.

Good luck with everything!
