Preventive MastectomyI have the brca gene and had bilat/prophylactic in May 2006...because of family history. Found out about the gene this year... am scheduled to have an ooph and hyster in Sept. My sis has the gene and had ooph...all three of her daughters have the gene as well. My daughter also has the gene and will have an ooph. Here in Vancouver there is a high risk clinic for those with the gene so do not need to have mast. It is the risk of ovarian ca that is the scariest for me.

Prophylactic oophorectomy and/or bilat mastectomy?Did anyone actually have a ooph/hyster? I am scheduled for the surgery Sept. 11 and am just wondering what to expect. My daughter will also have an ooph since she has the gene...there is a high risk screening clinic in Vancouver for those who have the gene so she will be thoroughly checked twice a year: mammo's and mri's.....
Anyways looking forward to hearing back. |

Brain dysfunctionWow!!! it's interesting to hear people's stories. I have had so many times that I forgot things too... Locking car and leaving it running with radio on, leaving for out of town and forgetting my wallet, leaving purse at home etc. etc. I have been taking a course ( keeps my mind off bc) but it takes me forever to get my assignments done. I spend hours on something that should take one.... I am on disability...have been for 15 months now... will stay on for some time longer since having further surgery. I had a bilat with expanders in May 2006, rads, on tamoxifan, effexor, synthroid ( now have hypothyroid) and have noticed my bp is usually extremely high.... I have the brca gene so am having an ooph and hyster in Sept. and then will have further surgery on my reconstruction when the approval has gone through. My job is teaching an extremely high risk group of high school girls and it is a new position..just don't know when I will be able to deal with that....
Glad I found a group that discusses 'brain dysfunction'... ( hi5 from chat) |

Sardines anyone??Hmmm...got me thinking...I have sardines in my cupboard and I think I'll have a toasted sardine sandwich. When I was pregnant with my first child.... several decades ago...I devoured toasted sardine sandwiches. I'd mash the sardines with diced onion and mayo and have mayo on the toast. Believe it or not... I haven't had sardines since. Guess it's time.
cheers ( hi5 from chat) |

Prophylactic oophorectomy and/or bilat mastectomy?cass: I tested postive for the brca gene and will be having an ooph and hyster in September. ( I was dx'ed with bc in May 2006 and had bilateral mast.) My daughter was also tested and has the gene as well. The clinician at the hereditary clinic said that if the mother does NOT have the gene she cannot pass it down to her children and if she has the gene there is a 50-50 chance of children getting it.

Hormone ther. or remove ovaries...I am taking tamox and just found out that I also have the brca gene so will be having my ovaries removed as well as a hysterectomy in Sept. I asked onc if I could stop tamoxifan after ooph and he said no because my levels were very high.

Flaxseed (again) and ER+/PR+I've heard that flaxseed oil is not good for you. because of the contraversy on flax I gave away my new bag of ground flax seeds. It's so confusing... what should we stay away from if we are ER/PR+ and on tamoxifan?

Anyone opt to be larger? After I had my bilat mast I had to have rads...my reconstructed breasts are much smaller than my original ones...apparently because they have to go with whatever size fits the radiated side. I am not happy with the size and was hoping to be a little larger..oh well

Who under 45 has been BRCA tested?Iam the third of 4 sis to have bc... we are not aware of any prior family history. The first sis to get bc died at 32, the next was dx'ed at 45...she would not have genetic testing done at that time but, when I was dx'ed last year she had the genetic testing done. She tested brca+... her three daughters 9 in their 20's) all tested positive for the gene as well. I tested positive and so did my daughter.
Appaently if the parent has the gene the kids have a 50-50 chance of having it...we are sure batting 100% with our daughters. I am scheduled for a oomph and hyster in Sept. and my daughter will have the oomph. I am glad I had the bilat. last May |
