Tests, Treatments & Side Effects + Help Me Get Through Treatment, Created: Nov 21, 2008 06:34 pm
Am I the only with Nausea??Hi Strongmom, You are not alone. I finished AC in May 2006, but I can still remember the severe nausea I had. I was on three or four different anti-nausea meds and I still had it, even vomited a couple of times. I ended up losing 10 pounds while on AC chemo. It took me two years to gain it back. I am now at my official pre-chemo weight. The best things that worked for me was fruit smoothies and soups. Plain water aggrevated the nausea for me. So, I would sip the clear broth from certain soups, drink a fruit smoothies when I could, and ate plain chicken breast. Exercise also helps...try to go for a walk if possible. I wish you the best. You will get through this. The last couple of treatments are the worst. Hang in there! Hugs.... Nancy Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

ROLL CALL - WHO'S A SINGLE SURVIVOR?You ladies are saying some of my exact thoughts. At the age of 50, I really don't see me marrying again. I've always loved the idea of being married, but at this age, I think I'm more about friendships. If it's meant to be, it will happen, I guess. I always told my friends, as I was raising my two sons alone, that I wasn't lucky enough to get rid of my ex as long as the kids were growing up, so why bother dating and getting involved with another man when I couldn't get rid of the one I divorced. My ex was truly a life-sucking moron who thought he knew everything about raising kids, but really didn't; and, he lived in another state. He paid me the lowest amount possible for child support and never paid the kids' insurance or medical bills. Now that both my sons are adults, I am so happy that I don't have to talk with him anymore...just a couple of times per year. I guess I too may still have some anger issues. I am keeping the faith that good things will happen for me and for all of us here on this board. Nancy Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

ROLL CALL - WHO'S A SINGLE SURVIVOR?Hi everyone. I don't post that frequently, but I always read the boards everyday. I just turned 50 in October, and am a single mom to two sons, ages 18 and 20, both in college. I divorced in 1992, after 6 years of marriage. While I dated a few times over the years, there was never anything serious. So, I kind of gave up on dating and decided to put my two sons first to give them the best upbringing I could. Just when my oldest son was in his senior year of high school, and my youngest son was learning to drive, I was diagnosed with bc. That was in Feb 2006. Even though they both were teenagers, my sons were my rock in helping me get through lumpectomy, chemo, and rads. They were wonderful in helping me while in treatment, and I think they both seemed to mature a little from this whole bc experience. I exercise daily, take yoga, and try to eat healthy most of the time. I have been on tamoxifen for over 2 years, but my onc is now testing me to see if I'm through menopause so that he can switch me to arimidex. I see him in December, so I will see what he says at that time. Now that I'm an empty nester, I do think about dating again, but then I think that with this whole bc experience, I don't know if I'm ready to be intimate and I don't know how a man will react to bc. I'm sort of a quiet, shy person, and I'm not one for online dating, but at this age, I'm not sure where to meet men. I work full time and when I come home from work, I just want to go exercise and then relax for the evening. It's been a while since I've been out on a date, so I'm not sure how to get started again. I will keep reading here and maybe I'll learn a few things from the rest of you wonderful ladies! Hugs... NancyW Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Washing HandsI work in a hospital where we have to undergo hand hygiene (or Infection Control) training every year. Once a year, we have to demonstrate hand washing. After we wash, our hands are swabbed. In a few days, we can see the results -- bacteria from where we missed washing thoroughly...it can be pretty gross. Part of our training also has to do with turning off the faucet, opening the door, and turning off the light with a paper towel in hand and steping on the handle to flush the toilet. How my Onc & Breast Cancer Just Saved My LifeI just had my first colonoscopy at the beginning of February, and I'm 49. My primary care doctor had me get it done now instead of waiting until I turn 50 in the fall. She told me to get it done before my 3 month check up with my onc, so I did. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I used the pills the day before and I had an early appointment (8:30am) the next day--the results were normal. It was nice getting the results the same day. At my 3 month check up in March, my onc was very pleased that I had this done now. It is a relief to have it out of the way. Hugs and love to all... Help !!I'm so sorry you are feeling this way. I had the opposite reaction during chemo--I lost 10 pounds and still haven't regained it yet (I just celebrated my 2 year anniversary). The best advice I can give you is to exercise. When I say exercise, it doesn't have to start out being anything strenuous. I highly recommend a walking program. This can be done indoors and/or outdoors. Look in stores that sell exercise DVDs. There are plenty to choose from, but I use DVDs from a women named Leslie Sansone who has a large line of in-home walking DVDs that are from beginner to advanced. Beginner programs consist of a one-mile program that takes about 15-25 minutes to complete. I guarantee you that if you walk one mile about three to four times per week, you will noticeably begin to feel better. My onc has always recommended exercise for me, even when I went through chemo when I felt too tired to do it. But I did it during chemo and it helped tremendously. Exercise after treatment is also known to reduce the risk of recurrence. You will be sore at first, but you have to keep in mind that the body is designed for movement, and your muscles are de-conditioned. Walking will get your muscles in better shape. This will also help with your high blood pressure, depression, and help you to sleep better. I am now walking up to about 2-3 miles per day, 5-6 days per week. As far as diet, my onc told me to eat low fat, very little red meat (preferably none), and lots and lots of fruits and vegetables. I find that making myself eat at least 5-7 servings of veggies a day helps me to stay away from the high calorie foods that cause the weight gain. I do these things for my sons (one in college and one in high school), and I want to be around for them for a long time. Your daughters need you to be around for a long long time. It is not easy, and you need to make time for it, but once you are in the routine of exercising and eating healthy, you will certainly notice a great improvement in your health, and your daughters will notice it too. I hope this information helps. Love and hugs to you... Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

when to take tamoxifenPer my onc, I take it twice a day. I take 10mg in the morning (usually around 6:30am) and 10mg in the evening (usually around 6:30pm). Very mild side effects...usually only a few hot flashes occasionally. Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Mother passed away, looking for coping help.Oh Jamie, I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mother to bc when I was 23. She died in 1981 and at that time, there was nothing out there for support. Please contact the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). They have really good support programs for families coping with loss. You and your family are in my prayers. God Bless... 2-Year Anniversary!Hi everyone. Two years ago today (Feb 13, 2006), I was diagnosed with bc. It turned out to be Stage IIA (1.9cm tumor and 2 tiny positive lymph nodes). Breastcancer.org and these discussion boards provided me with a lot information and support while I was going through treatment (4 AC, 38 rads). I'm feeling great, except for the hot flashes brought on by the tamoxifen. I'm 49, so my onc is thinking of switching me to arimidex sometime later this year. I can say that I have most of my energy back. I am eating healthy, lots of fruit and veggies, low fat, and lots of chicken and fish. I also make an effort to exercise at least 3 hours per week. I just wanted to say that even though I do not always post, I read these boards everyday. You ladies are my support. I also wanted to say that I pray for all of us daily, no matter where we are in our bc journey. Blessings and great health to all of you... Sensible Cents for SinglesI can certainly identify with all of you. While I do treat myself to nice things on occasion, I, too, try to limit my spending, especially since my bc diagnosis. I think it's because it was really hard for me to pay off all the medical bills that insurance did not cover during treatment. I continued to work full time during chemo and radiation. At the time, and (still) as a single parent, I also had two sons in Catholic high school and was very concerned about making payments to the school as well as medical bills. And now, almost 2 years after diagnosis (Feb 13 2006), I think more about money than ever. One son is in college and the other is a senior in high school...soon to be in college in the Fall. I also think it's because I fear that if the cancer returns, I will need the money to cover medical expenses again. While I hope it never returns, I do think about it and the costs involved in treatment. I too want to enjoy life and travel more because life is really short, but it will take some time for me to pay off some of the bills to be able to do that...But I'm going to remain positive that I can do this. Hugs and prayers to all... Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

TAMOXIFEN AND BODY HEAT CHANGESI too get real cold several times during the daytime and at night...so cold that my nose, hands, and toes are ice cold. At work I'm always wearing a sweater on top of a sweater. To relieve the cold, I drink hot tea...then I get a hot flash and I'm fine...hot, but fine for a while. At night, I have a sheet, blanket, and comforter on me and I'm still freezing until the hot flashes kick in. I believe I read that chills/coldness are a side effect of tamoxifen. I think I prefer the hot flashes over the bone chilling cold! Dx 2/13/2006, IDC, 1cm, Stage II, Grade 2, 2/14 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |
