Radiation on Saline Implants?

Hi,

Yes, I had radiation on my implant this past year and finished last December. It hasn't hardened but the implant has definitely shrunk with the radiation since I finished it. I have not as yet gone to see a plastic surgeon but have considered having a breast lift on my natural side. I am a bit lopsided which I guess happens whether you have had a mastectomy or not with radiation. Some people might not notice the difference and I guess it hasn't bothered me enough to do anything yet! I am rather tired of doctors as you can well understand. It had been three years since my mastectomy so I don't know if time is a factor. You might want to ask the doctor. All in all I was happy with the outcome.

suspicious lymph nodes

I had a mastectomy in June 2004 for DCIS with microinvasion. There were some isolated floating cells but the sentinel node dissection came back negative. Chemo was not advised but I did have arimidex as they assumed I was estrogen positive. Initially this was diagnosed through a core biopsy after the mammagram and ultrasound were negative. I did have a MRI at the time since I would have had a double mastectomy if anything showed up on the right side.

Fast forward three years....I have continued a mammagram on the right side and then MRI on both sides. Last year the lymph node area on the mastectomy side lit up and I was diagnosed with recurrence to the lymph nodes (3). I was then diagnosed estrogen negative, HER2 positive and had six rounds of TCH and herceptin for a year. I had scans done of the rest of the organs which have been clean but will have my final one next week.

I have asked the doctor if I did not have MRIs whether this would have been caught. He initially didn't think it was anything serious and attributes it to the keen eye of the radiologist.

Hopefully this won't be your situation but thought I would let you know my experience.

My onc sure knows how to depress me.

I don't blame you one bit for getting upset with her comments. Of course she does want everything in order if/when recurrence should happen but she should never assume that you won't be aware of what she has written or implied by her comments.

I have had a recurrence after three years. The first time(04) was DCIS with microinvasion and I was one of the lucky 1% who had it spread to the lymph nodes. Last year they found three lymph nodes with cancer so I had chemo and radiation to the same side where I previously had a mastectomy. I work part time so I didn't require taking a leave and I told my supervisor to NOT assume I could not work while undergoing treatment. I know I was lucky but sometimes people assume the worst.

Hopefully you feel you can speak honestly to your oncologist. I would tell her at your next visit that you were bothered by her remark. They are human and are not perfect. I believe that each patient can help both themselves and the medical staff by communicating their feelings along the way.

Hang in there, girl!!

Eye problems

LittleFlower,

He hasn't done that. I have been on four different eye drops and now am trying pills. I am rather young (almost 56) and my mother (almost 86) was just diagnosed with glaucoma. If this doesn't work he will try the laser surgery. I have been trying to put it off until I am finished with all my treatments although neither the opthamologist nor the oncologist have heard of any correlation. Since my nose runs constantly with the herceptin and the mucus membranes appear affected I still question whether it has affected my eye pressure.

My original diagnosis was in 2004 DCIS with microinvasion and some floating cells with sentinel biopsy. I had mastectomy and put on arimidex although they really couldn't determine hormone status. MRI last year discovered enlarged lymph node and had more surgery then TCH regimen and radiation to the same breast as original cancer.

The glaucoma in some ways has bummed me out more than the recurrence!

Eye problems

Has anyone had problems with their eyes while they have been treated with herceptin? I am finished with the  chemo and have about four treatments left of herceptin. I was diagnosed with glaucoma  before my diagnosis and since the pressure has risen I am wondering if it is related to chemo/and or herceptin.

BC in 05 now its back in a lymph node

I have to jump in with this conversation.

I was originally diagnosed in May '04 with DCIS and microinvasion determined with sentinel node biopsy. I had a single mastectomy followed by oopherectomy in Jan. They had difficulty in determining hormone status since it was tiny so I was put on arimidex and assumed hormone positive.

Originally the diagnosis was  found with an MRI and did not show on mammagram or ultrasound. I had some breast pain similar to that experienced with a breast infection. At that time MRIs were not routine.

Last year I had my routine mammagram on the remaining breast followed by the MRI for both breasts. Big surprise-it detected a swollen lymph node which the surgeon could not even feel on the mastectomy side!! Long story short he did more surgery and 3 of 9 nodes positive. ER- and HER2 +. Full scans negative

I did six rounds of TCH and herceptin. The chemo wasn't bad and I have about three more herceptins. I also had radiation to prevent possible recurrence.

It is difficult to hear one is in the 1% range but I am confident that I have what's best for the situation. My oncologist is positive which helps.

Maybe this will help you.......I do understand!

Glaucoma/eye pressure and chemo treatment

I am wondering if anyone diagnosed with glaucoma has had difficulty as a result of cancer treatment. I finished the TCH regimen in early December and the pressure in my one eye has risen. The doctor doesn't think any of the chemo drugs would affect it..... I am still taking herceptin until the end of May. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone had a recurrance after Herceptin?

I'm confused. I don't quite understand your treatment regiment since you say you had a mastectomy and then a partial mastectomy on the same breast. Where did you have the recurrence?

my cancer's back

Yes, he did. He took 6 nodes and they were clear except for one which showed isolated tumor cells that were each less than .2 mm.The oncologist didn't recommend chemo because the statistics showed that chemo would only help by 1-2 %. I meet with her on Tuesday and I am wondering what she will have to say with the recurrence!

my cancer's back

Sunshine,
My case is somewhat similar to yours except I am three years out from a DCIS diagnosis. I had a single mastectomy in 04 with microinvasion. My MRI in April showed an enlarged lymph node and I had surgery last Friday to remove the area under my arm. He found three positive nodes in the axilla. Noone recommended chemo in 04 and I spoke to serveral experts in the field. I guess you and I are the 1% that does become invasive. If I hadn't had the MRI it would never have been detected until it was much larger.
I understand your concern about chemo but so many have had it that I feel I should be able to cope.
Have you started treatment yet? I don't meet with the oncologist until Tuesday. By the way I am post menopausal so I have been taking Arimidex for the past three years. I guess that didn't work !!
