tissue expander exchange nightmare

Beesie, thanks for the words of encouragement. I guess I just have to wait and see how they turn out. My expectations were definitely way too high. I will weigh my options and proceed from there. It's hard to be vain when I should just be grateful I am NED....

Massage these suckers??

Muffy, what size implants did you get? Mine are 350 silicone moderate profile, and they seem way too small, I am not happy. I wonder if massage will help....

Massage these suckers??

Melanie and Rebecca, mine make funny noises too, like a squishing sound. Very weird...but nice to know I am not alone! Meagan

Also, when can you start massage? I am 2 days post-op. What are you wearing for bras? Sports bras?

tissue expander exchange nightmare

Barbie, I felt like I wrote your entry. I am 2 days post-op from my exchange and I have been crying for 24 hours straight. I wanted to be a C and I think I am a B if I am lucky. They are low and flat and I have no cleavage. I actually miss my expanders. But, reading all the other entries after yours does give me some hope. Maybe with the settling and "fluffing" they will look better in a few months. My follow up PS appt is next week so I will drill him then about what my options are. I felt like this would be the end-all for this cancer year from hell, but to my surprise it is not. That shock alone made me break down for the first time since my dx. Hang in there and let us know what the PS says. Meagan

Pain from Mastectomy and Scarring

I had a tough day when my bandages came off from my bilat mast. I thought I wouldn't care but I really hit rock bottom and finally realized what had happened to me. But after a week I was able to see it, wash, move, and now 2 months post-op I could care less. I have tissue expanders that are filling every week or so, so it looks like I have breasts again. The scars don't even bother me.

Expanders placed differently/lop-sided?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm sure it will all work out in the end I just hope I don't have a leak on the right side. I see my PS on Tues for another fill, I think I will drop down to 30cc's....slow and steady!

mastectomy

I have 4 treatments of AC. One down so far, it was brutal the first week but then i felt good so I will work during the rest. How long are you taking off? All my MD's told me 6 to 8 weeks for recovery. I will have the exchange surgery down the line which is just 2 weeks.

mastectomy

Hello,
I am a nurse and I have been out for 8 weeks after bilateral mastectomy with tissue expanders. I had to wait until my full ROM came back, which was only about 2 weeks ago but now I just started chemo so I am waiting another few weeks. Total for me will be 2 1/2 months. If I had a computer job I probably could have been out for 3-4weeks. Good luck!

Expanders placed differently/lop-sided?

Hello, Anyone else have this problem and does it even matter: my right tissue expander is higher on my chest and closer to my armpit than my left one, and each time I get a fill the right side is much more painful and never looks as big as the left. I know it is a work-in-progress but has anyone had weird looking expanders but then good results after the exchange? I am nervous they were placed wrong. Thanks!

Clothes with an expander - Help!

Hello,
I am 4 weeks post-bilateral mast, with expanders, and only have 120cc in each right now. I wear a lose tank top with some sort of camoflage top as well. Either something with two pockets on the chest, or a cardigan than buttons at the chest, or that new style of shirt that has some gathering at the chest. It actually looks cute. My issue is that my scars stick out so if I just wore a plain t-shirt it looks like I have crazy nipples!

They gave me LAT flap instead of DIEP!!!

That is awful! I am sure it will all work out and heal okay but mis-communication is the worst. I decided on bilateral mastectomy and 2 days before my surgery it was still booked as a unilateral. They said the same thing to me that the OR wasn't booked for enough time for two, but they were able to get more time. If I had came in the day of and it was wrong I don't know what I would do. It just goes to show how on top of things the patient has to be. I thought when I got cancer that there would be health professionals taking care of me as a whole but you learn that each doc only cares about their part, the onc, the ps, the breast surgeon. There isn't one health manager that will oversee everything. You have to be that manager, but what new cancer patient has the time or the clear head to do all that!! I am a nurse and am learning how incredibly flawed the health care system is. If you aren't your own advocate then there is no one. Sorry to rant, but somedays I feel like I have a full-time job just calling doctors offices trying to keep my records, my appointments, my healing all staright!
Good luck!

The truth about wigs

Quote:

Thanks, Jan. I tried the ACS, but all the wigs looked too old for me.
I think I've made up my mind:

It is a compromise between long and short.

Lisa, what color is that called? I love it.

Tamoxifin now or later?

I am 32 years old and my husband and I are starting IVF berie I start chemo in 2 weeks. I, too, am supposed to do Tamoxifen for 5 years. I feel I won't be able to wait, but I am going to try my best to wait the full 5 so I can have a better chance of being around when I do finally have children. I have heard that women go off after 2 years as well...... Just take one year (or day) at a time!!

tissue expanders and flying??

My PS said he has never heard of any problem. He had one patient that had them in for almost a year while she traveled the world. I was concerned about cabin pressure, but he said it should be fine. I will be flying in August. Let us know how it goes!

Cocoa Butter on Scars?

Has anyone used creams to help minimize scars and if so when did you start applying them post-op? Thanks!

Tissue Expansion Fills look different

I have had 2 fills in the past 3 weeks, both of 60cc's and the right side does not seem to be increasing as much as the left. They looked the same at first, then 2 weeks after the first fill the right side almost looked deflated.... My PS said he didn't think there was leakage, but after the 2nd fill the left side is definitely bigger. has that happened to anyone?

How do you sleep after reconstructive surgery?

I am 2 weeks post-op bilateral mastectomy with expanders and the sleeping part is the worst. I am a stomach sleeper so this is torture. I sleep with many pillows propped up all around me, and there is barely room for my husband so we went out yesterday and bought a king-size bed. The first week I made sure I took a perc before bed so I could sleep through the night, but now I wake up and am tortured by the decision on whether to get up to use the bathroom or save the effort and suffer! This is torture!!

Anyone opt to be larger?

I am 2 weeks post-op bilateral and was a B and think I will try a small C, too - why not??!!! Right?! But, I am worried the pain of expansion will get in the way. How is your expansion going? It's hard to believe I will be able to completely lift my arms up again over my head. I am a blood transfusion nurse and hang IV bags up all day - I can barely lift a brush to my head now. Any suggestions?

Going in for bilateral mastectomy and recon on Wed

I am 32 yo and now 2 1/2 weeks post-op from bilateral mastectomy and tissue expanders. What a rollercoaster I have been through! The pain wasn't bad just the charly horse feeling around my chest and the aching muscles and the sleeping on my back! But, ROM exercises have helped. I was out to the movies after a week and a half. I had a tough time the day after my bandages were removed. I finally had to be face-to-face with what was happening to me and I just collapsed. But now I can look at my chest and not even care. I was a B cup and now look like a teenage boy but it's not so bad. I am expanding every week now, which is uncomfortable but not awful. Good luck with your surgery and just know everyone is different so take care of yourself and take your time healing.

Who under 45 has been BRCA tested?

I was tested automatically, but found out yesterday I was negative. I spoke with a genetics counselor at the time and she said even if I test negative I probably am positive for some unknown mutation that they haven't discovered yet because of my age and family hx.
