Dressing to hide expander 'lopsidedness'

Button up shirts w/ a t-shirt under worked well for me.  Also, I used breast enhancers placed strategically to even things out.  I had bilat, but one expander was higher and boxier then the other.  Yes, the final outcome is much better.  Best wishes.  Jeanne

Now What? What do I do? PLEASE reply!

First of all, it's not your family and/or ins. co you should be worrying about.  It's your decision and you need to be comfortable w/ it.  Legally BC BS has to pay for mast + reconstruct w/ a dx of cancer.  I had DCIS x 2 rt breast 5/07, age 46.  My MRI showed possible 2 invasive CA, one each breast.  I could have gone for bx, but opted to go ahead and have bilat. mast.  I also had previous b9 biopsies, repeat mammos, etc.  I could have just had lumpectomy w/ RAD but my surgeon left the final decision to me.  My final path came back all clear, however, a LOT of precancerous cells bilat. so who knows at what stage it would have been at had I not gone ahead w/ the mast.  I had immediate reconstruct w/ expanders and have never regretted my decision.

You will get a lot of wonderful support and info here, no matter what your decision is.  Just make your own decision that is best for you.  Best wishes, Jeanne

tissue expander pain

Once again Ruby knows what  she's talking about.  Go at your pace, not your PS.  Really listen to your body and stop the fills when they feel uncomfortable and only go back when you're ready.  I found that Robaxin (muscle relaxer) really helped right before and after the fills.  Best wishes, Jeanne

filling procedure

The first few fills went fine, I listened to my body and went at my pace which was fine with my PS.  However, on the last couple of fills I started getting some sensation back so the nurse did use some numbing cream prior which worked great.  Best wishes, Jeanne

Nipple reconstruction or just tattoing?

Hey Lopina it's a very personal decision and as Sherry said, don't do anything until you're sure.  I've seen pics of her 3D tatts and they look GREAT.  I opted to have the nipple reconstruct and had petals tattooed around them.  I'm very happy w/ my decision, it may be a bit different, but it was mine and I was sure about it.  Best wishes, Jeanne

Arm exercises

Hey Angie - try walking up the wall during a nice gentle shower.  The web site Felicia mentioned is also great.  Don't push it, listen to your body, you'll get there.

Best wishes, Jeanne

11 days post surgery

WOW, so sorry you are having to go through all this on top of hurricanes.  I live in Gulf Breeze and have definitely had my share, luckily no damage.  Hopefully you are on some type of pain meds which should help, muscle relaxer (Robaxin) was of great benefit for me.  I found gentle warm showers in the morning walking fingers up the walls helped as well as the following web site when you're ready:

http://www.stayingabreast.com/site/browse/breathing.htm

Things do get better and I wish you all the best.  When it comes to the fills, just really listen to your body, go at your pace.  As far as the hormone therapy goes, definitely discuss w/ oncologist.

Double Mastectomy

You have been given some excellent advice, this place is wonderful.  You will get so much support and encouragement on your journey.  However, everyone's experience is slightly different.  I had my dbl mast w/ expanders last May w/ exchange in Oct.  One thing I definitely benefited from was the combination muscle relaxer, Robaxin, and pain med, Lortab.  Listen to your body when it comes to the fills, go at your pace as we all seem to be different in that regard.  The Robaxin really helped especially in the day or 2 after each fill.  I went home the day after surgery and back to work PT just under 2 wks.  Some have no problems w/ range of motion, however, I did.  This web site really helped w/ stretching exercises:  http://www.stayingabreast.com/site/browse/breathing.htm

Gentle warm showers while walking your fingers up the wall is a great way to start your morning.  Overall I had a good experience is there is such a thing.

Best wishes, Jeanne

Less than 24 hours left

Best wishes to you Pinky.  I didn't get the camisoles and did just fine.  If you have a fanny pack, small purse w/ long string, old fashioned housecoat w/ pockets turned inside out you'll do just fine as far as the drains are concerned.  Hopefully they won't be in that long.  I actually sewed a strip w/ snaps onto my sports bra which kept the drains in place.  I removed the strips after the drains were out and was able to continue w/ the sports bra.  Good luck,

Jeanne

When will I stop boob watching!!??

Well Farrah, you're obviously not alone.  I didn't look quite as much after my exchange, but have to admit when I'm in a bathing soon I can't help but wonder if people think I had 'augmentation' vs reconstruction.  That's the part that sort of SU*** for me.

Implants not the size you wanted??

Went from 533cc to 616cc, "C" to small "D", 6 wks.  Although the 533 did settle somewhat after a few wks, I still wasn't completely happy.  My wonderful PS let me wait until the last possible minute to decide, she scheduled the extra time just in case, I think only 30 additional mins. for both.  I'm definitely glad I went bigger.  My nipple reconstruct was done w/ the 'skate flap' 'v flap' type method, not graft.  Not sure if that would make a difference.  Again, best wishes on your decision.  Really listen to your body and yourself, you won't let you down.

Implants not the size you wanted??

No you're not vain, if you are then so am I.  I also was not happy w/ my original implants (bilat).  My PS replaced w/ larger ones when I had my nipple reconstruction.  She said it was not big deal and she just wanted me to be happy.  I am much happier and yes, the insurance covered.  Best wishes on your decision.  Jeanne

My insurance company asked for WHAT!?!?!?!

I can't believe an ins co would ask for such.  I would get a copy of that request off to the insurance commissioner immediately, absolutely outrageous.  The ICD-9 code is the diagnosis code and the CPT is the procedure code, all of which needs to be provided by your physician.  Maybe send them a picture of your ass instead and say 'kiss this'.  Best wishes, Jeanne

Expanders so different. Will implants be also?

Yes the implants will make a diff.  I had dlbe last yr, my rt. expander was OK, but my left was high and squared off on top, very off looking.  However, as assured by my PS and all here, the implants are symmetrical.  The left has slightly, slightly dropped to where only I notice it.

Best wishes, Jeanne

Foobs & Fipples -Questions

Bilat implants last yr. w/ C-V flap fipples,, shrunk quite a big.  My wonderful PS even allowed me to go a size bigger on my implants when she did the fipples, no big deal to her, just wanted me to be happy.  All healed well.  Ended up having flowers tattooed w/ the fipple being the center of the petal - love them.  I usually wear a bra at work or going out, however, at home I'm most comfortable w/ just a snug cami which sometimes I wear under shirts for the layered work as well.

Best wishes, Jeanne

What about an MRI?

Hey Elaine - this is a very personal decision, one only you can make.  I was dx w/ DCIS x 2 in rt. breast last May.  I too was on the fence on trying to decide single or dbl so I did have a MRI to help me decide.  My MRI revealed 2 possibly invasive CA, one in each breast.  That made up my find, had dbl.  Although no further cancer was found in either breast, there was a lot of precancerous tissue in both so I feel very comfortable w/ my decision as who knows at what stage the cancer wound have been found later.  MRI is only a diagnostic tool and cannot confirm cancer, only suspicion of, but it did make my decision easier.  Also, have you considered having the BRAC testing done?  That may help in your decision as well.

Best wishes in this decision, really listen to yourself, you'll make the right decision,

Jeanne

Insurance and the healthy breast

Hey Journey - I had bilat last yr. w/ DCIS only in the rt. breast.  I had no problem w/ ins (BC/BS) covering the procedure or the reconstruct of both.  As Beth mentioned, even if it's originally denied, keep on fighting it.  Best wishes, Jeanne

"Square" edge on Expanders?

I had bilat w/ exp. June '07.  My left was slightly higher and square on top.  My PS said it was probably due to the expander not completely unfolding, but not to worry.  She was right.  My exchange was Oct. last yr and all OK, they look pretty darn good if I do say so myself, as do others.  It does make dressing a slight challenge, but it WILL even out at the exchange.  Also, my PS kept me comfortable with Robaxin (muscle relaxer) and Lortab as needed.  The Robaxin definitely seemed to be of great benefit.  I wish you all the best of your journey.

hi, bilat scheduled, young children

You found a great place for support and info.  I had bilat w/ expanders last May.  Boys 12 & 14 were great.  It was about 2 wks. before I could drive, took a while to lift heavy objects.  The boys were great about helping out w/ that, but since your children are so young, perhaps teach them now how to separate the clothes, of course, you can supervise them as well, have them carry them and load the washing machine and you do the rest.  Also, raising my arms up was one of the hardest things, especially turning on the ceiling fan - maybe get an extension that your oldest or you can grab easier without reaching up.  This web site was great for exercises:

http://www.stayingabreast.com/site/browse/breathing.htm

Also, gentle warm showers while 'walking your fingers up the wall' was a good way to start the day.

Best wishes and come back often - this place will get you through it.

Tattoos

It's definitely a big decision, a very personal one.  I did opt for the reconstruction but had flowers tattooed around the nipple instead, love them.  I think a chest tattoo of your choosing would be great.  Donn Davis is a wonderful tattoo artist in New Orleans and also does the 3D nipple tattoo and areola tattoos.  You need to send a personal message to Timtam to get permission.  Best wishes on your decision.

Jeanne
