Can a biopsy grade change after lumpectomy?

My  core biopsy report had it at a grade 1.  I had a lumpectomy and the pathology report had it as a grade 2.     I don't know if it could change from a 1 to a 3.

Anyone have minimal AI side effects?

I started on Arimidex in late Oct./ early Nov.    I had a low grade headache for a couple of weeks that disappeared.   My eyes itch but that is about it for side effects.  No aches or pains or hot flashes.

I had a bone scan done and it showed some osteopenia.  I am having another bone scan done the end of the year.

5-day vs. 6 week radiation treatment?

I  had mammosite.   I had the ballon put in on a Thursday and the treatments started the following Monday and ended on Friday.

I did not have to change the bandages.  The nurses did it each day.  No one mentioned changing the bandage that first weekend but I went to my regular doc on Saturday since the bandage looked like it needed it.  I wasn't about to touch it myself since I wanted to avoid infections.

I was not tired from the radiation.  I will admit it was a long week running back and forth twice a day.

As far as having something hanging out , it wasn't too bad.  I went to Walmart and bought a soft cotten bra in a larger size and that  helped.  The doc did want me to sleep with a bra on, but that wasn't easy.   I gave up the last couple of nights.

The tape from the bandages caused a nasty rash.  I found that Gold Bond extra medicated lotion did the trick.  It really helped.

I was very happy with mammosite.

Anyone quit taking tamoxifen due to increase in cholesterol?

I read up on this again.  I was wrong.  It seems like tamoxifen can lower cholesterol, regardless of pre or post menapause.

I thought tamoxifen raised cholesterol if you were PRE Menopausal.

If you are POST menopausal it can lower it.

Has anyone done MammoSite Radiation Therapy?

I read the same thing and thought it didn't make sense. My surgeon and another that I know of does it after the lumpectomy.   I had the lumpectomy on 8/23 and the catheter was inserted on 9/6.

I don't know how long you can wait after the surgery to have it inserted but in my case I  know it could have been at least a week later.  I had a cruise planned for Oct 1 way before any of this  happened.  The doc told me not to cancel especially since I had trip insurance and he felt I might be able to go if all went well.  He called the radiation oncologist to get scheduled asap because of my cruise.

I saw the radiation oncologist and he showed me the catheter and explained everything.

If you don't have copies of all your tests results, you can ask your doctors for them. I have a copy of every test result including the pathology report.  I got the pathology report on my first visit to the surgeon on 8/30. That is when it was determined I could go with the mammosite.  The doc did an ultrasound and looked at the cavity. He said it looked perfect for the balloon.  He did warn me the same as the radiation oncologist that if the CT scan showed that the balloon was too close to the skin surface they would not be able to do.

Has anyone done MammoSite Radiation Therapy?

I  had mamosite this past Sept and I am very pleased with it. It was the right choice for me.

I had no ill effects from it.  My breast became a little red but that went away in a week or so.  Some seem to get a hardness in the lumpectomy area after a couple of months, but this didn't happen to me.  My biggest problem was the reaction I had to the tape holding the bandage around the catheter.  Gold Bond extra medicated lotion did wonders.

You asked why it wasn't more common.   There are some things needed to qualify for it and this would not fit everyone.    According to the web site the tumor must be 3 cmm or smaller, you must have clean margins, and the nodes are negative.   The cavity from the lumpectomy cannot be too close to the skin surface.   Even after they insert the ballon, a CT Scan is done to measure the distance.

My surgeon has used mammosite for the last 5 or so years and offered it as a choice to the 5-7 week radiation.  My local hospital/cancer radiation center has the qualified people to do the procedure.  There were a couple of other ladies getting this the same week as me.

If you have any more questions just ask.  I would be more than glad to answer any type of question.

Choosing Chemo based on OncoType DX test

Here is something you might want to look at from NCCN.

http://www.nccn.org/patients/default.asp

There are decision trees where you can enter you dx and it shows the recommended treatments.

Choosing Chemo based on OncoType DX test

I was dx 8/2007.  IDC

Age 59

Postmenapausal

Lumpectomy 8/24,  followed by mammosite radiation.

NO chemo

.8cm, Stage 1, Grade 2, E+40%, P+ 70% Her-

Sentinel Node - negative

Oncotype score was 11, 8% recurrence.

10 Peaceful rating...............prior to Arimidex

Arimidex -  I am still unsure if I will continue to take this.  I might switch to tamoxcifen or take nothing at all.  This drives me crazy and is always on my mind.

Peaceful rating with arimidex - maybe a 3

New treatment reduced to one week

Interesting information.  Similiar but different than mammosite since the radiation is less.

thanks for the link

Can surgery cause cancer to "spread"?

Thanks for some of the facts.   They were very interesting.

3girls4me,

I think the comments you received fell into the "old wives tales" category. As a kid, I recall hearing "having your body opened up to the air, causes it".

I doubt they have any medical knowledge to base their comments on.   Sure, there is some fact to it but you are the one dealing with breast cancer not them.

just diagnosed

I don't think this is normal.    I think I would be very upset getting blind sided with chemo and clinical trials.   Something doesn't sound right.  I too would have real ISSUES with this.

By any chance was there an oncotype test done ?

ipann39's suggestion is a good one.  Post your test/pathology reports.

Tamox SE's post meno

Hollyann,

Where did you get the information that tamoxifen does not have much effect on post menapause?

This doesn't seem to match the information I received from my onc's.

Oncologist and tamoxifen

I am going round and round with this. I am not sure what I am going to do.  The side effects of everything tamoxifen, arimidex, femara is scary.

I am post menapause. My onc wanted me to take Arimidex. I started it about 2 months ago.  I have developed some severe muscle aches in my thighs and hips on and off.  I am not sure if Arimidex is causing it  or not.  I have some osteopenia. I refuse to take fosamax because I have had lots of gum/tooth problems.

I asked the onc about taking tamoxifen and had her get me a CYP2D6 test, which showed I am a high metabolizer.

I don't like the idea of taking Arimidex or Femara since these drugs haven't been around that long.   She insists they are better.   My thinking is they don't know the long term effects.  As far as A & F being better than Tamoxifen , the CYP2D6 issue was not around so in my mind the tests aren't valid.   My onc even agreed with this.

One of my worries is the bone loss.   I had a follow up visit with my rad onc and he felt I should be considering  the  fact that the drugs will make the bone loss worse.  He said that tamoxifen actually helps improve the bones in postmenapause and that might be a better choice.   We also talked about taking nothing, and he was not against it since my cancer was very, very small.   He said many decide against it.

Italianrose, my cancer was similiar to yours.   I had a lumectomy and mammosite radiation.   I am still not sure what path I will eventually take.   Everyone has a choice to make.

I don't think I will be sorry if I take nothing.

Good Luck with your decision and thanks for starting this thread.  I think there are many who choose not to take anything and many who are thinking about it.

Thanks to all the others that have posted there decision not to take the drugs.  It is much appreciated.

How long does a standard lumpectomy take

I had a very long day also.  It started at the doc's office at 8:00 and I left the hospital around 5:00.

I had to go to my surgeon's office and have the wire put in.   This was around 8:00.   I then went up the street to the hosiptal around 9:30 or so.   I went to pre-op shortly after I arrived.  They took blood, my temp etc. The usual stuff.

The anethesiologist came in and talked to me.

Another doc injected me with that stuff that hurt like the devil  about an hour before surgery!  I was also injected with the blue stuff but that was during surgery.   I had the SNB and the lumpectomy done at the same time.  They did the SN biopsy while I was still in surgery.   I was in surgery about 2 hours.  Maybe an hour in recovery.   When they woke me the doc was there with the good news about the SNB.  No cancer cells found.

They gave me pain pills also, but I was lucky and didn't have much discomfort.  I only took one that night to make sure I slept.  Like Anneshirley I was very careful about any activities.

Don't be afraid to disagree with your doctor!

All this advice is good. Do not be afraid to consult with another doctor.

A friend of mine has a sister who has had BC twice.  First time she had a lumpectomy.   At some point maybe 2 or 3 years later she found a lump.  The doctor told her it was nothing to worry about.  He would not do a biopsy.  After 3 months of the doctor insisting it was ok, her sister got her to go to Dana Farber in Boston.  It was cancer.

Pain after excisional biopsy/lumpectomy?

It has been 3 months since my surgery.  I had a lumpectomy, and SNB.   I had the high radiation, mammosite.  No chemo.

I don't really have pain but I get more of a shooting , stabbing type thing every now and then.   I just had a follow up with my radiology doc and he said, yes, some people get this. His opinion was it was from the SNB since nerves are disturbed.

I was happy it was nothing to worry about.

7 days & waiting for MRI Result

Mine took almost 45 minutes.  I had to lay on my stomach for the entire time and not move !   I don't know how I did it but I did.

They gave me earplugs to help drown out the noise.  They inserted the IV in the beginning but nothing was coming through until the last 20 minutes.  The tech came in and started it.

This place had a mirror under the table where I could look down and see out in the parking lot.  I might have gone bonkers without that.

Onc Misspoke, maybe???

Somewhere I learned that a patient is entitled to a copy of all test results.

I  know when I asked for my biopsy, the person in my surgeons office said certainly and she would fax it.  She mentioned that everyone should have a copy of all test results and even asked if there was anything else I needed.

I  have a copy of everything.  This way I can do research and also give my PC doc a copy in case she didn't receive everything.
