Not Diagnosed but Concerned + Waiting for Test Results, Created: Oct 12, 2007 08:53 pm
Ovarian cancer too?Hi awb~ thanks for your response. I have finally made the decision to have surgery to remove just the right ovary/fallopian tube next Friday. I will undergo frequent monitoring of my left ovary and uterus via ultrasound and hope for the best. I'm just not ready to deal with full blown menopause!! As my MD said, I might be re-visiting this six months from now, but~today~ I'm comfortable with my decision. I truly appreciate all of the feedback I have received~ you are all an amazing group of women. Laura |

Ovarian cancer too?Tender~ Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post. It is believed that this cyst did develop since my starting the Tamoxifen. I actually underwent laporoscopic fibroid myomectomy last summer right befor my bc dx and the surgeon did not see any cysts at that time. I know in my heart what I need to do~ I just hope that if I do opt for the hysterectomy, I won't alienate my oncologist and my husband won't be saying "I told you so" down the road. That would just be awful!! I have to make a final decision soon. The gynecological oncologist has ordered a CT scan of my pelvis/abdomen for this Thursday~ apparently that will help to define what lit up on the PET scan. I'm so tired of tests...I know I shouldn't complain~ I got away with just lumpectomy and radiation due to a low oncotype score but I want to get on with life and put this cancer stuff behind me... THanks again for your help! Laura |

Ovarian cancer too?I am currently in the decision making process re: whether to have a total hysterectomy or just remove my right ovary. I have been on Tamoxifen since 2/07 and have developed several cysts, however, there is significant concern re: the one on the right ovary which hasn't changed and is classified as complex. After reading Tender's post, I'm feeling very anxious. I've been to my Dr. at Dana Farber and he said he'd be comfortable with me having either procedure, although it's basically what I can tolerate at this point as I will have to be monitored quite frequently if I opt for removal of the one ovary only. My oncologist in my area is adimantly opposed to total hysterectomy. My gynecologist and gynecological oncologist I was referred to both recommend total hysterectomy. My husband is adimantly opposed as well due to the fact that I am 44 and he is concerned with quality of life issues. I'm finding this whole situation has me more rattled than the breast cancer diagnosis last year. I wish someone would tell me what to do and the docs would all agree. I'm a wreck. Laura |

I can't.....stop smoking........I was a pretty heavy smoker prior to quitting almost 2 years ago~ I quit in January after attending my 37 year old friends funeral due to breast cancer. Ironically, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Sept. 07. Anyhow~ Although I quit cold turkey which I still can't believe I did~ My father was a 3 pack a day smoker and underwent laser accupuncture in Jupiter, Fla. He had 2 treatments and NEVER SMOKED ANOTHER CIGARETTE!! So...it might be worthwhile to look into whether this type of treatment is available in your areas~ Good luck to all of you. I worked in a psychiatric hospital for 15 years and was told by the head of the addiction dept. that nicotine is harder to give up than heroin so don't be too tough on yourselves...Laura |

Oopherectomy? Thanks Anne~ I would love to PM you if only I could figure out how to do it!! I am really struggling with this new set up. Anyhow~ I truly appreciate your input. At my last appt. with my gyn on Tuesday, she was thinking that her choice would be to remove the right ovary laproscopically and leave the left intact with the plan to monitor via ultrasound frequently. The concern then becomes~ if the Tamoxifen is causing the cysts, the likelihood is is that more cysts will develop on the left ovary and I will need to undergo more surgery down the road. I'm hoping that the doctor at Dana Farber might have some thoughts about another medication~ ie; Evista; I don't know. I have a feeling they're going to say to have the right ovary removed, watch the other with ultrasound and I will undergo monthly Lupron injections to "test out" menopause chemically as opposed to being thrown into it surgically. |

Oopherectomy?I am currently going through the process of deciding on treatment for a complex cyst on my right ovary. I have been on Tamoxifen since Feb. 06. My gyn has been following the cyst(s) via ultrasound since March. She is STRONGLY recommending that I have at least the right ovary removed. My oncologist is adamantly opposed. I am going to see Dr. Burstein at Dana Farber on 10/1 who I saw for consultation last November to help sort through the options. It's so scary. My gyn was very honest with me the other day and said there is no way to know for sure that my ovary isn't cancerous without removing it. The Ca125 and the ultrasounds can provide false information. So...a part of me is ready to undergo a complete hysterectomy to reduce my worry. It would be so much easier if there was a specific protocol and all doctors followed it. I'm more freaked out with all of this than I was last year with the breast cancer diagnosis. |

IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE- PLEASE CHANGE THE TOPICS LIST!!!I also agree wholeheartedly. I used to enjoy being on this site for hours and found it very comforting. However, the recent changes have made things extremely frustrating for me and I tend to log on and log off very quickly because I just don't have the patience it takes to locate the threads I've historically enjoyed. I agree that if I were newly diagnosed, I would find another site which is more user friendly. |

Tests, Treatments & Side Effects + Radiation Therapy - Before, During and After, Created: Sep 10, 2007 04:08 pm
Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentHi Brenda~ My lesion showed up out of nowhere but I still passed it off as a bruise or leftover mark from the radiation/biopsies I underwent. My hope is that women will take more careful note of their skin before all the treatment begins so that they will notice any changes. I NEVER in a million years would have thought that the tiny mark I had could be malignant melanoma. By the way~ I saw my radiation oncologist on Friday who informed me that there is no way that the treatment could have caused the melanoma. He said "MAYBE~ 10-20 years after the treatment was completed but not this soon". My oncologist and gyn both said they've seen this happen to women before soon after finishing radiation~ Who do we believe???? Take Care~ Laura |

Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentVery well said. My oncologist, breast surgeon, and gyn are all extremely vigilant and do examine me VERY carefully at each exam. However there is usually a few months in between visits~ I strongly encourage everyone to not wait until their next appt. if something different "pops up". A few months with melanoma or anything like it could be too long of a wait and significantly alter the prognosis. Laura

Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentJackie~ I was thrilled to see your post and learn that your spot was benign. I'm glad your MD pursued it despite the fact that it isn't a very pleasant area to have surgery~I'd rather go through that than have invasive malignant melanoma!! Take Care~ Laura

Looking for help for friend in Californiacsp~ thanks for your suggestions~ I greatly appreciate your response. My mom told me today that our friend who is 49 is now paralyzed on one side~ her husband is needing to stay home from work to provide all of her hands-on care. She is not eligible for hospice services as of yet due to the fact that she is still receiving active treatment. So...they are looking for someone to help...I will pass on the suggestions you've made! Thanks again~ Laura

Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentHi LillyJ~ I am hoping that whatever you have found is nothing but I'm awfully glad that you read my post and are having it checked out. Please let me know what the surgeon said. I really think most women who undergo breast radiation are in the dark about this nasty side effect!! I wish you the best of luck...

Looking for help for friend in CaliforniaJust received a phone call from my mom whose best friend's daughter has been struggling with metastisized breast cancer for several years. She has 2 young daughters, lives in California; married but her mom who lives here in Ct. believes that she greatly needs help in the home and insurance will not cover this. Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentHi Shirlann. I live in Ct. and have not had any problems getting anything related to my breast cancer authorized. The melanoma I had was a direct result of the radiation...It's horrible that we have to worry about how things are going to be paid for on top of the worry about cancer.

Lingering side effects from radsI finished rads in early February '07 and didn't experience any aches or pains til April. It got so bad that my oncologist ordered an MRI "just to be sure"...found that I have tons of swelling which is the cause of my discomfort. Some days it's so bad~ particularly upon awakening, that I have to take ibuprofen. Although the docs have all reassured me that it is residual effects from the lumpectomy and radiation, it is still scary. It is a daily reminder that I have breast cancer...

Did anyone cry at their first treatment?Hi Stressin67~ Glad you decided to post~ Welcome!! Yes~ I cried at my first treatment and several others. I definitely think that when you're lying on that table 5 days a week for at least 6 weeks, the severity of what is happening to you hits home. I've been through with radiation since February 07 and still have days when I cry. It's completely natural~having cancer changes who we are forever. For me, crying is a good thing every once in a while. There's no right or wrong here...I wish you the best of luck with your treatments!!

Melanoma caused by radiation treatmentHi HollyHopes~ My MD assured me that I don't need to worry about developing melanomas anywhere other than where I received breast radiation so I don't think you need to worry about the spot on your lip~ However, getting regular annual all-over body skin checks is not a bad idea!! Take Care~ Jaredsmom
