Latissumus Dorsi -- what was your experience?

Hi Texas,

I had lat dorsi flap on right breast in April of this year, which was 3 months after I finished radiation.  I had skin expanders in place at time of bilateral mastectomy in July of 2007 so they were there during radiation.  My skin held up beautifully.

I was in hospital for one night (although I should have stayed 2).  Don't look to rush home.

I had 2 drains...one in front, one in back.  I have a scar that looks like a small football.  It is fading already.

I had 410 silicone implants put in this past October.

It took me a good two weeks to recover, one week on pain meds.  However, I don't think we bounce back as quick because of all the treatment we've b been through, but after two weeks I was good to go!

This is a big surgery, but I agree with ladies above:  it is doable.  I am thrilled with results and will be getting nipples in January.

Good luck to you.

Hugs, Jackie

Anyone starting Chemo in August 07?

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I haven't been on in a while.  My wonderful daughter decided to have dinner with my laptop and spilled an entire glass of water in it.  Sadly, my one year old computer died.  I'm sneaking on my dh's work computer.

Kaye, congratulations on the good news!!!!!

DeAnn, congratulations on the nipples!!! I can't wait to get mine.

Lilith.....good luck with the job.

Nash, sorry that going to the center is so hard for you.  That stinks.  My onc always examines my lungs, chest, neck...etc., each time I go.  These days I love to be felt up by anyone.  My bs does it, ob/gyn, plastic surgeon and onc.  Now that I have the new "girls" I just have to get my dh to feel me up again!!! LOLSurprised

I'll be back again soon.  As soon as I get my computer fixed.

Hope everyone else is okay.  Hugs to all.

Jackie

Hi Ladies,

Kaye----I thought that was a new recipe for yours and DeAnn's smoothies.  Sounds just as appetizing as some you have described!!! (LOL) Sealedonly kidding, I swear.

Nash, please don't stress about this event.  Take baby steps and I'm confident you are going to pull this off.  Is there anything I (who has no talent) can do to help you?  Please let me know.

My new girls are very strange.  I still have stitches on one foob until Friday.  I like them, but I don't love them.   I guess it's too early in the relationship to tell.

Ladies, I did the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk today.  It was wonderful.  I went to the Survivor tent to get a t-shirt and survivor ribbon and all these survivors were there and they come over and hug you.  I'm crying just typing this.  It was very emotional.  But I must say it felt good.  The saddest part of the walk was looking around at all the very young survivors.  It's scary to see these young beautiful women and totally understand what they've been through.  I was truly inspired. I'm going to try and post pix on the other site.  We'll see if I can do that.

Hugs to everyone, Jackie

Women with breast cancer gene

Jackie S,

I have the same name...Jackie S...S being for "Sassi".   Anyway, I was dx at 46 and had bilateral mast., chemo rads and I'm on tamoxifen.  I went to a genetic counselor this past summer(at the recommendation of my onc.) and even though I didn't have a lot of odds in my favor, she recommended I get the test and, luckily, my insurance covered it.  Thank goodness I was negative.  But just as Nash above, they told me there are mutations that are undiscovered and I could carry it.  My daughter is 21 yrs old and my main concern was about her.  She will have to be checked starting ten years before my dx (35 yrs. old).  The counselling was very informative and the test itself was just a simple blood test.  Good luck.

Hugs, Jackie

Anyone starting Chemo in August 07?

Hi Ladies,

Wow....this is the longest I think we've all gone without posting on this thread.  I miss you all.  I've been stuck home resting and keeping my arms at my side like a good girl (so implants stay in place!!! eeewww...) Anyway, Kaye, I got a seroma! When the doctor was telling me what it was all I could think of was you and all the way home in the care guess what song I was singing in my head? You got it.  LOLLaughing So there is a lot of fluid in left breast area and he tells me implant could shift so I have to be careful.  I keep thinking that in one swift, unplanned move I'll have a boob growing out of my neck or something.  Wouldn't that be lovely.  Anyway, thanks to Kaye all I can do is laugh about it so that's a good thing.

I keep sitting here thinking of California and the ice skating event and I have to tell you that each time I envision us meeting I start to cry.  I hope I can control myself when it really happens because I think it's going to be very emotional.  I can't wait to meet you all.

Hope you are all well and enjoying the weekend.  The weather is PERFECT here.

Lots of hugs,

Jackie

Terrified and angry

Rose,

I'm sorry you are going through this and I understand your anger and frustration. It's very, very scary and upsetting.  Your case sounds somewhat similar to mine.  I had bilat mast 7/3/07.  I had one positive SNB node.  Immediately after positive results my BS told me he wanted to do axillary node dissection on right side.  I was so opposed!!! I went to Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Manhattan( I live in New Jersey), for a second opinion.  Doctor there said I should definitely get ax node dissection.  Even though I didn't want to, I did.  I had ten axillary nodes removed--BS said that was the size of my pad--and 2 more nodes were positive.  Thank God I did it.  And, Rose, it was nothing compare to bilateral mastecomy that you have been through.   I stayed over one night and recuperation was easy.  Yes, there is an increased chance for lymphedema but I take all the precautions.

I pray for your strength in deciding but I do think it's necessary for you to have the second surgery.  If you have any questions please feel free to PM.  I hope this helped you a little even though I know it's not what you wanted to hear.

Lots of hugs,

Jackie

Anyone starting Chemo in August 07?

Tami,

My sugar has been a little high for the first time ever.  Is it really from tamoxifen?? I had no idea.  Also, what is "army of women"?  I'm doing a Making Strides Breast Cancer walk on Ooctober 19th.  Sorry about how sad you are with regards to your dog.

I'm home recovering from my implant exchange surgery.  All went well.

Hugs,

Jackie

Pam,

Thanks for your support.  I never realized that sisters weren't welcome on certain threads,  I pray for you and all others on this board.  However, I state once again that I will stay away from places where I am unwanted.

 Hugs to you Pam.

Curious

Well,

I come here mostly when I check ACTIVE TOPICS, that's how I found this.  But, wow, sorry for being a nuisance to you and other metsters.  I though we were all welcome everywhere on this board.  Sometimes I felt the need to express support for what I thought were my sisters but I can see now I'm not welcome.  Okay, Watson, I won't come here unless I have to, which I pray I never do.

Prayers and good luck to you all.  Goodbye too.

Hugs, Jackie

Anyone starting Chemo in August 07?

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I haven't been in the loop lately.  Just running around to doctor appointments-as usual.  Funny, when I had my colonoscopy they said I had diverticulosis too.  I guess we all have that in common too now.  My internal med doctor says we all have it!!.  Anyway, glad everyone seems to be doing okay.  Harley, I hope your u/s is okay.  Kaye, you are too funny.  Nash, sound like a great idea with the ice skating.  FYI, I don't care where or when it is but I will be there.  DeAnn, so sorry about your puppy.  That's so sad.  Lilith, hope all is working out with your job hunting.  June, Angie....hugs to you both.  I hope I didn't leave anyone out.

I am going tomm to get my new FOOBS....BOOBS....whatever they are.  I can't wait to get these skin expanders out and my new girls in.  I hope this is the last surgery I have to have for a while because I'm about done now!!!! Aren't we all?? Anyway, I hope to be in la la land for a few days with the pain meds.  I used to hate taking any meds but now they're my new  friends (remember Scarface..."say hello to my little friend") that's what dilaudid will be to me for the next few days.  I will write as soon as I can.

Hugs,

Jackie

Nash, that is just heartbreaking.

I just got back from meeting with the doc to get my BRCA results and I am NOT positive for the brca gene.  I am so thrilled for my daughter, who is 21.  It was weighing heavy on my mind and I'm just happy that some news was finally not so bad.  I pray for all our young girls.  This disease is dreadful, but 15???? it's sickening.

 Hugs, Jackie

Anyone starting Chemo in August 07?

Ladies,

I'm leaving tomm. to go down to Wildwood, NJ for a long weekend.  It's the annual firefighter's convention for the State of NJ.  It's usually a fun weekend and our last chance to get to the beach before fall weather sets in.  I hope you are all well and have a great weekend.

Hugs,

Jackie

Kaye,

You look beautiful!!!!! I was up and energetic and hungry (what else is new?) right after my colonoscopy.  I think you can go back to work, but  sometimes just the little trauma of the ordeal makes us just want to stay home on our little dent in the couch and relax.  Know what I mean? Or...maybe that's just the way I am these days.  You don't feel sore or bruised.  The worst part is the evening before.  The yukky (for lack of a better word) stuff you drink and the whole bathroom ordeal.  Try not to invite any guests over that night (LOL).  I threatened both my kids not to bring their friends over!!!!  After that it's smooth sailing.  Good luck.

Hugs, Jackie

I want to see more pix of the wedding!!!!!

Hello Ladies,

Lilith....love, love, love the pictures.  What an interesting place.  I dream of going the places you have been!!!  Kaye, thank you and DH for the history lesson.  I had no clue!!!  By the way Kaye's DH...thanx for the compliments.  Your input has gotten us through many trying situations.  Thanks back to youWink.

In case anyone is interested, my magazine article for the hospital where I had my surgery came out.  I'm not as savvy as you ladies to post links and all that and my hubby is not home so if you would like to see it go to:

http://www.riverviewmedicalcenter.com (i hope!)  click on publications and that's me on the cover of the sept/oct 2008 issue.  go down a little and click on my article for early detection for breast cancer.

I don't like the picture of me by the pool  because my eyes were tearing from the sun, but the photographer used it anyway.  oh well.  I just hope I can inspire some women to go get their mammograms annually.  Even though "following the rules" did nothing to prevent me from having it spread, maybe knowing about MRI's and so forth will help others.

Hugs, Jackie

P.S.  LOLInnocentI'm not forcing you to take a look, but I hope you do!!! You are the chicks whose opinions matter the most to me.
