Connecting With Others Who Have a Similar Diagnosis + DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ), Created: May 18, 2008 11:33 pm
Insurance and genetic testingWell, my story is this. Diagnosed with DCIS at the age of 42. My mom died from ovarian cancer at 51. She was diagnosed at 49. My oncologist recommended I get tested for the brca gene. Insurance denied my request stating that I had no first degree relative with breast cancer. This doesn't make sense to me. Aren't breast and ovarian linked if you carry the gene? After the counselor took my family history, she said I have a 17% chance of having the gene. Is this relatively high? I think I will appeal. I am mad that they turned me down. At first I was relieved, because I didn't really want to know, but now that I have had time to think it really makes me mad. What are your thoughts? I need some input Thanks to all who respond |
