The Canadian Connection...calling all canadian women

Another Canadian signing up!  I've been reading this board for a year now and yes, the Canadian one is kind of slow.  I'm from Eastern Ontario.

Only in Canada eh? Reconstruction

Hello All Canadian 'Reconstructors'

Thanks Viv for starting this thread, I too would be interested in hearing any Canadian stories about reconstruction.  I know its available but haven't really looked into it yet.

flippin out

Hi Viv,

I didn't see your post either but I saw from some other posts that you were upset about some things.  Hugs to you.  PM me if you like.

I found the OHIP system not too bad - 4 weeks from first mammo to sterotatic biopsy, results in 4 days, 3 weeks to surgery and then a bit of a wait for radiation.  Thats a loooong story I could share with you if you like.  All in all it went pretty well and no out of pocket costs except gas and parking and we can claim that on our tax return.

Chin up and we all hope to hear from you soon,

Nan

lumpectomy - the deflating breast

Hi Susan,

Yes, you've hit the million dollar question.  I had a 'lumpectomy' January of 07.  The surgeon told me he would be taking up to a quarter of my breast.  I was okay with that, fortuneately the dcis was in the outer lower quadrent so I felt and still feel that its not so bad.

My breast was swollen for weeks after the lumpectomy and I thought wow, it doesn't look too bad at all.  Then during radiation I had edema something wicked, the bad boob was even bigger than the good one!

Now, at one year out there is a noticeable difference between the two but really no one notices except for me.  My nipple is slightly displaced downwards and that does bother me but my choice was saving the breast for now and a mastectomy if ever I have a recurrence.

I have thought of plastic surgery but not until I'm clear for at least a few years.

DCIS

Hi Gigi,

Welcome, and good luck with everything coming up, especially the mammosite.  I really wanted to try that but its not too common up here in Canada and my dcis area was too big and margins too close anyway, so I went the six week route with radiation.  Keep in touch and the dcis thread has great ladies on it too.  ALL the ladies on this board are helpful and really free with their stories, it helped me so much in the early days.

Viv, whats going on with you?  What is your time line like?  Do you have a date for surgery yet?  My wait for radiation was horrendous, the only complaint I have so far for OHIP.  Hope you have a faster team!

Who here is from Ontario??

Hello Everybody!

I am from a very small town in Eastern Ontario south of Ottawa where literally everyone is a relative.  We live in 'CowTown' as my daughter calls it on a dairy farm - actually we sold our cows a few years ago and are semi-retired, just cropping and 'horseing around' now.  Cancer treatment centre is about an hour and a half away so radiation for 6 weeks was a bit of a bummer.

DCIS with comedo necrosis

Hi CrazyDaisy

I posted to you on a couple of other threads as well.  Good for you getting all the info you can.  I read and read everything I could get my hands on for a while when first dx.  This is the best site on the net.

My DCIS diagnosis was bad from right from the sterotactic biopsy, we knew we were dealing with Nuclear Grade 3 and comedonecrosis and a widespread area.  But I definately wanted to go for lumpectomy first.  Lump+Rads=Mast if of course the cosmetic outcome won't be too bad.  After the surgery margins also became an issue.  On the VNPI I also score an 11.

But we went ahead with lumpectomy and radiation and I am happy with that so far.  My mammogram in November showed no new areas of concern and I'll push for another mammo in 6 months.

My surgeon never suggested a mastectomy, he is very pro breast conservation and less invasive procedures.  He wouldn't do an SNB before the pathology from the breast came back either and as it turned out there were no micro invasions found in all that DCIS.

So far, so good.

Hey, I see you are in Port Perry, I'm actually in Eastern Ontario myself.  We get to deal with OHIP!!  Some plusses and minusses on that score for sure.

It all started with DCIS

Hi CrazyDaisy

I was diagnosed with DCIS in Jan of 07.  Had a partial mastectomy (9x7x3cm) removed.  Luckily I had a 'generous' breast to begin with but it is a little misshaped now and quite a bit smaller.  But I wanted to keep my breast if at all possible.  I figure a mastectomy is the second option if I get a reccurance.

I had rads for 6 weeks because of the size and the poor margin that could not be reexcised because it was next to the chest wall.  Rads were not good for me, I had total skin breakdown and desquamation all over my chest.  But that is rare and not the norm.  And I am the one with good skin and I never burn but apparently thats not an indicator of what radiation will do.  It works from the inside out - really its not like going to the tanning bed!Tongue out

A year out from rads I'm doing okay.  Worried about reccurence all year but all my tests in November came out great.  I chose not to take tamoxifen.

DCIS - mast - get SLNB????

Hi Cathy,

I would vote for the SNB.  I had a lumpectomy for DCIS and asked for an SNB just in case they found some IDC in there with the full pathology report.  Surgeon said no. With a lumpectomy of course they can go back and get it later, but I would have been chewy with another sugery.  Once you do a mastectomy you can't go back.

Get it done now for peace of mind.

Pain after excisional biopsy/lumpectomy?

Hi Katiejaye

I don't know how common this is, haven't seen this discussed much.  I am also just about a year out from lumpectomy (I believe I had partial mastectomy, 9cm removed)  Yes, my breast is still very tender and I too have a small boy (7) jumping on me and wanting to wrestle.

I would say for myself it is not so much pain but unbelievably tender.  The nipple and aerola area are the worst.  I am still looking for comfortable bras.

I have no advice really, just wrote to say I feel your pain and hope it gets better.  My radiation (6 weeks) ended in July, I think that tenderness stays a long time too if you had it.

I can't.....stop smoking........

Dear Trix41

I hear you loud and clear.  I'm not (correction wasn't a heavy smoker) but since my diagnosis in jan 07 it has become an obsession.  Don't know why.  Guess because I sat in my new recliner (we call it the cancer chair) the first few months and drank tim hortons and smoked.

My doc asked the other day what it would take to get me to quit and I actually said I don't think lung cancer would even do it.  Sad and weak I suppose but I have enough on my plate right now.

Try not to stress too much, stress is bad for you too.  Hugs, and unfortunately I am there with you.
