Who started Tamoxifan in July?

Hi Vettegal,

I started Tamox in late June, for the second time.  The first time I had depression.  This time I am taking it with Effexor and so far I am tolerating the Tamox well.  I have not had hot flashes or night sweats.  I am taking gabapentin (not sure if I spelled that correctly) for something else, but my oncologist said that the gaba helps with hot flashes, so maybe that is why I have not had any.  Effexor also helps with hot flashes, in addition to helping emotionally.  Just some ideas, if you want to ask your doctor about these other drugs.  I don't like taking so many drugs, but if they help me to tolerate the Tamox, I think it is worth it.  I do not want a recurrence and anything I can do to prevent that I will.  Thanks for starting this thread.

Zoladex (Goserelin), good or not?

Hi Andrew,

I will be starting on Zoladex this week, the one-month injections, so I have been following this thread with interest.  I am 40, had surgery one year ago, radiation ended in Sept. and I have not had hormone treatment yet, except for a brief trial of Tamox.  It had depressive side-effects for me so I stopped taking it.  My doctor has now recommended that I try Zoladex.  I went to Google and entered "Zoladex effectiveness" and came up with some studies that concluded that it does help prevent a recurrence.  I know these decisions can be hard to make - so many things to consider.  I wish you and your wife the best.

Tamox vs. Zoladex

Thanks Siona,

I am wondering what your first month or two on Zoladex was like.  Can you describe your side-effects?  I am scared to try it - need some encouragement.

Tamox vs. Zoladex

Hi,

I tried Tamox and experienced depression (tears non-stop) after only five days. I stopped the Tamox.  My doctor is now suggesting that I try Zoladex.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?  What have been your side-effects with each one?  I work full-time and need to be able to function during the day.  Should I try Tamox again and stay on it longer to see if SE lessens with time? Or try Zoladex and see what happens?  Thanks for your input.

Good oncotype result but hard decision

Hi, I was diagnosed last year at age 39.  My tumor was 2.2 cm, stage 2A, ER+, node -.  I had a lumpectomy and radiation.  My oncotype was 10 with a 7% chance of recurrence.  My oncologist did not recommend chemotherapy for me.  It seems that your wife is in a better situation than I was so I am surprised that chemo was recommended to her.  I would definitely get a second opinion.  I hope all goes well for you all.

er positive+flaxseed

Hello,

I have just finished treatment (sugery and radiation) and the next step would be Tamox. I have been considering Brevail in place of Tamox.  Does anyone know if any studies have been done to see if it is equally effective at preventing recurrence as Tamox?  I would love to take something natural if it works as well, but am open to taking Tamox if it works better.

Also, Dr. Horner's letter mentioned that a study showed that Brevail enhanced action of Tamox - do you know where I could find that study to read more?

Thanks,

sonrisa

Natural Hormones

Dianne,

I have heard of the saliva test.  My husband is in the process of doing one this week due to some health issues he is having.  I have not had one done.  I am familiar with natural hormones.  There is a doctor who has written several books on the subject.  His name is John Lee.  I do not agree with everything in the books, and am not necesarily advocating following his protocol to the letter, but he does have a lot of information about hormones that may be of interest to you.  There is also a website, southriverrx.com that may have some information on natural hormones.  I hope this helps.

Hormone therapy vs natural

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your input.  Your comments and stories from your own experiences have been very helpful.  I am still in the decision-making process.  I'll be seeing a new oncologist this week.  I am sure she will recommend Tamox, but it will be good to hear the reasoning, the statistics, etc.   Senorita, I have had similar thoughts, as far as the flax binding to the estrogen receptors like Tamox.  If something natural without side effects does a similar work in the body, that really appeals to me.  Thanks, Rosemary for all the dietary info, and thanks to each of you who suggest taking Tamox.  It is a good point that it is pretty low-risk and worth a try.

So many big decisions in this journey . . .

Grateful to all of you,

sonrisa

Hormone therapy vs natural

Hi - I am new to this group - diagnosed with invasive ductal carc. in April.  I am pre-menopausal, cancer was ER+, had lumectomy (nodes negative), no chemo needed, now finishing radiation.  The next step would be Tamoxifen, yet I am reluctant to take it due to side effects, effect it has on the body long term, etc. I am considering taking supplements (IP6, SGS, flax, etc) and staying on a breast cancer diet instead of Tamox.  Yet, I also am concerned about not taking Tamox due to the fact that Tamox has been studied and proven to decrease risk of recurrence, while other supplements have not been through such rigorous studies.  Has anyone else gone through this decision with similar thoughts?  What did you decide?  Thanks for your input.
