DCIS - cancer or Pre-cancer?

Sharon

Maybe each state is different.  One can call it "pre-cancer" if it makes that person deal with it better.  Its important to deal with it and take care of it:<}  Or the beast will bite you in the you know what.  I will look up NIH and do more reading.  Like I said this is a funny debate to have.  I cant help to think how trivial  the tittle"pre-cancer" has on women who dx was bilat mast.

Don't know what to do

susan

Im sorry maybe I didnt clearify myself...I did have a biopsy.  I am going into this with my eyes wide open!!!!!!  Yes looks are important to me, and my emotional well being.  Yes they can do recon on no skin......My dr. informed me that with rads its harder (depending on how one reacts) to get the look I want.  He also stated which made my decision 100% was the recurrence rate (for me) will be next to 0 with mast.  Also g-d forbid if I get cancer again I can zap the beast with rads.  I wouldnt be able to have that choice if I decided to do rads now.  another thing is I have more calcifications and he doesnt know if he can get it all in one sweep.  I would rather cut those babies off then go through any waiting to see if he got the rest.  I say that like its nothing now....I cry at night and laugh in the day. thats how I stay sane.

DCIS - cancer or Pre-cancer?

Beesie

Thats very interesting and I plan on hopping on that site to check it out.  I have been reading ALOT of books and everyone of them (all written with in the past 10 years) and all of them label dcis as non invasive  cancer.  One dr.   stated how it could be dangerous for other Dr.s to tell their patiants that its pre-cancer.  I know the debate will go on and on.  Just remember this......fact....the breast cancer survival in usa has gone up ALOT, and the dx has gotten younger and younger.  dcis is classified in that statistic.

Scared and confused...

lynne- I think you are getting really great advise, as did I (still am) from this site.

I am 36yrs old with dcis.  I am choosing to do a bilat mast.  It is a VERY personal choice and one I have lost ALOT of sleep making.  Its the best choice for me.  DCIS is VERY treatable and you will get ALOT of different opinions on how to do so.  My Dr. told me that age is a factor on my reacurrence, NOT MY CURE......I have heard many different opinions about age on this web site.  I dont want to sway you one way or the other.  ASK ALOT of questions!!!!!!!  I have 2 beautiful children and a fantastic husband.....I dont want to take ANY chances on this EVER coming into my life again ( in any form, they found my cancer through microcalcification).

You will be fine and dont secound guess whats in your heart.

I do hope this helped in some way.

feeling tired and overwhelmed

 Diana-VENT AWAY....:<}!!!!!!  We all need to do that.  Feelings are OK to feel and they are OK to feel them HARD!!!!  I cant and wont tell you to "cheer up" or (my fave) "snap out of it, life can get worse".  What I want you to know from one women to another......is HOLD ON.  Its going to be a bumpy ride, but this ride does slow down.  You have to be a STRONG WOMEN to go through all you have been through, and YOU are STRONG enough to see this through too.   I stopped getting all the different opinions and went with my gut feeling (on dcis).  Its a personal choice, and what ever choice you make you WILL be there for your beautiful daughers wedding.

 please dont loose your hope

DCIS and surgery

thank you for your story.  I feel like I made the right decision (bilat mast), but I do tend to secound guess myself out of pure fright!!!!!  I am going to my ps this friday and will see my oncologist the following weds.  Ive read SO MUCH info that I dream about it.  I want to avoid further operations in my future.  My microcalcification grew in one year and formed cancer.  My dr. did tell me that even if the cancer doesnt come back (after lump and rads} my calsicication prbably will and I will WORRY.....I know I feel like a broken recored.  Just trying to grip my reality:<}

thank you sooooo much for being apart of my mind restoration:<}

Diagnosed today, DCIS...mastectomy recommended

Take things slow....I would think about doing ALOT of stretching first and go slow using no weights to start, just your own resistence (sorry for the spelling its early and I have to type fast).  Congrats on your success.  I am making an appointment soon for my bilat mast.  If you have any stories you would like to share about your experience I am all ears:<}

Keep your chin up and cry when you need to and laugh when you can

Avasmom-   I am right there with you my friend.  Im curious  to know where sharon lives.  Maybe its different there.

I just dont want women out there to think that dcis in NOT cancer!!!!  thats why its called Ductal (its in the duct) CARCINOMA (another word for cancer) in situ.  It wont kill you (or me) thank goodness b/c its caught at the earliest time and is VERY treatable..just do your homework.....read read read:<}

Im NEwly Dx with this

HI

I was dx with dcis on Sept.4th. I am 36yrs old. I know how scary it is.  I lost weight and sleep....now I am gaining my sanity and dealing with what is ahead of me, at least trying:<}.  ALL WILL BE WELL!!!!!  You will get alot of info and support here,  Everyone has a story and people will take different paths.  Some (like me) will opt for bilat mast, some mast, and some lump with rads.  It is a VERY personal decision I am sorry you have to make.  Good luck with all and if you need to chat we are all ears.

Don't know what to do

Hi

I had a biop and now I plan on having a bilat mast b/c of all the reasons stated in the above (general response)  when they do a mast they will check my snl and take out all the breast tissue and check it all, so I dont have to worry about reacurrence.  My microcalsification grew in one year and formed dcis in one year.  THATS SCARY.  like I said this is quite the ride.  I feel fine (emotionaly) during the day....night time stinks!!!!!!  the reality of it all is alot to take in,

Don't know what to do

newbie here is what my chart says....Ductoral carcinoma in situ, Cribiform type, intermediate grade, with focal comedonecrosis and associatied microcalcification.  Tumor size .3cm, er/pr favorable.  I am 36yrs old.....my dr.said that he belives I have more microcalsifications in diffrent parts of my breat.  I decided I would not get biops on them b/c I would not have any breast left to work with reconstruction.   didnt go in for margins b/c that too would affect reconstruction for me.  My body frame is small and my breast are already altittle mis shaped from my biop.

DCIS - cancer or Pre-cancer?

 Sharon Correa-I was told that one would have to wait 5 years to give blood after having dcis on this a dcis site.  I was also told (on a dcis web site) that one cant get life insurence or it will go up.  If I am giving miss info on that subject THANK YOU for correcting me.

I just want ALL to know that dcis is cancer at its lowest  grade.....that is A FACT and everything else could be hear say.  sorry about that.  dont want to plug false info
