Shock, that makes perfect sense to me. People have bad credit for a lot of reasons but one reason is not being careful about purchases and paying bills. People have insurance claims for a lot of reasons but one reason is not being careful about maintainence, and prevention. Both claims and poor credit are correlated with a lack of prudence.

Can we just stop using the word "troll". Someone who has a different opinion is not a troll, they are just a person with a different opinion. When it is someone whose id is clearly known from other topics they surely aren't a troll.

Gas price survey

Mary Lou, I live in Toronto. I know it seems like a shocking price but by the time you convert the litres and dollars it isn't quite so bad.

Girlfriend recently diagnosed and is pushing me away...

Now wait a minute. Kid in a candy store?? Oh I get it, that was a figure of speech, but this isn't your trip. If your girlfriend wants to talk to you she will. If she wants to talk to your mother, she will. I know that you and your mother love her and all that, but this isn't about you or your mother.

I see that you are a caring guy, but maybe your girlfriend is pushing you away because you are too pushy. I think you need to back off, quit trying to get her to "open up" and just be a fun person in her life. Maybe she doesn't want or need you (or anyone else) there for every appointment.

And stop thinking that you know or realize what she is thinking. You don't. Reading here you have heard what some others thought or felt. That's it, that's all. Maybe it is related to what your girlfiend is thinking/feeling and maybe not.

This sounds harsh I know, but you would have driven me bonkers.

Gas price survey

About .81/litre which is a lot more expensive than in the US, but a lot cheaper than it was. I don't care I am cutting down on my driving.

Herceptin & Heart Problems?!?

Everyone has to weigh the risks/benefits for them. For me the potential benefits outweighed the risks by quite a bit. I didn't have any heart problems and had made it through Adriamycin without problems. Actually my MUGA scans improved through the year of herceptin.

There is another website her2support.org which might be of use to you.

I can't get my act together and I don't know why

I think the 5 brothers lost in WWII were named Sullivan and I think they were from Iowa. This was sort of a story behind the "Saving Private Ryan" movie where the point was to save this surviving son (if I remember correctly which is always in doubt).

I went on the "Freedon trail" in Boston last month at one point the trail leads through the courtyard of Old North Church (of Paul Revere fame) and there is a wall that has replicas of the dogtags of all the soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. A sobering site and sight.

HELP!! I'm scared!

This is a site for anyone affected by BC so it's a site for you too. You might not be able to treat your mother's BC but you certainly can help. After the mastectomy your mother will be in some discomfort for a while and should not drive or lift anything heavy. If you could do the grocery shopping and some of the cooking for a couple weeks that would be a big help. Laundry and bed making will likely be awkward for her too and it is so nice to have fresh sheets when you are spending more time in bed. Vacuuming and sweeping will be hard for her so take care of that.
These things might seem sort of trivial, but it will mean a lot for her to have them done.

Try not to worry too much, no one wants this disease but there has been a lot of progress in treatment.

If Canadians can, why not we?

I'm glad that someone was able to send you something to lessen your anger, and even more glad that the reason for that anger has been eased.

Sorry Shirley, I'm somewhat computer impaired. I did try to watch the video, but my speakers are the pits and I found it hard to follow the transcript. I did get that they think that soldiers were endangered by the front page article, as least I think so. Also that one said that there wasn't a front page article. But still that doesn't translate to "not one sentence" about veterans.

I don't read the NYT either on line or hard copy every day. Hard copy on Sunday only, online only sometimes.

Trust me, no one steals any election in Minn. Those Norwegian bachelor farmers are tough. There is a paper trail all the way. I don't think Minn even formally has a democratic party. I think it might still be the DFL.

Shirley why would you say that the NYT didn't give one sentence to Veteran's Day?

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/11/opinion/11watson.html?ref=opinion

There was another opinion piece about was and an article about where Bush had observed the occasion. Are we reading different NYT? To be honest I usually just do the Sunday issue in depth and then rely on my husband to e-mail me good stuff during the week. I heard about this op-ed on the radio and then checked and read the Bush article.

If Canadians can, why not we?

Well Dotti there are a number of reasons, not least of which is the Bush administration's push to keep the news of deaths muted and downplay the return of the bodies.

But there are other ones. Canada has about 1/10 the population of the US and has suffered even proportionally fewer losses than the US has to date. It is a bit easier to mark each one.

Most practically it is logistically possible here. Every fallen soldier is flown to Trenton AFB and then transferred to the Toronto morgue. They make that trip on the major highway through a heavily populated part of Canada. I think the radio news reports announce the time of motorcades so that commuters will know about them and also people can decide to stand on one of the many overpasses. Often some group organizes something, but then random people just join them. I don't know how it started.

felicia, those blue states "Neuvo California" sound suspiciously like Canada. The only statistic I doubt is the mosquitos. 92% of them can't live in red states, at least not as measured by body mass. I know from personal experience that Minnesota literally has tons of them. Most natives regard them as the state bird.

Good for you althea for your 2007 tax return. I just wrote a pathetic letter to Revenue Canada explaining why I hadn't done my 2006 tax return. I did send them some money that I figure is more than I owe but they still want the paperwork. Those guys are anal compulsives. I bet they dust.

Perhaps the one thing I do try to cope with is cat vomit, mostly because I usually seem to step in it barefoot, so I'm on alert for the sound. A few years back I heard the telltale kakkkakkakkk huuckkk huckkk and ran down the stairs yelling "Where is that cat throwing up?" It wasn't the cat, it was my son and a couple friends trying their hand at "scratch" music. They were highly offended.

Instead of reading a good book....

Elections are easier in Canada because there are fewer things on the ballot in a given election, usually only 1 or 2. In the US there will be (possibly) a president, a senator, a representative, some locals, some judges, the sheriff, assorted propositions regarding thing like dog racing, marijuana and one I can't remember in Mass.

As well as having been a voter in the US, I've been a scrutineer and vote counter in Canada and it is easy to do and phone in the results 20 minutes after the polls close. Counting by hand with all those variables in the US would be a nightmare.

The US voting system is screwed up in a lot of ways and I have no idea how it can be resolved.

I just hope whoever wins, wins big. I don't want another electile dysfunction episode.

Just been told my mum has weeks to live

In so far as you can, cut yourself and everyone else some slack. Everyone's tensions are high and everyone is feeling fear/guilt/anger and a whole lot of other things. Don't take anything that another does or says too seriously.

Your mother is not the first person to ignore a health problem and it does not reflect on you or your siblings that she did this so don't feel guilty. (easy to say I know, but try not to) There isn't much you can do except cope as best you can. Hospice is a good suggestion and perhaps, depending on the age of your son and your mother's condition, a couple of days off school to visit grandma might be appropriate.

So sorry you are going through this.

I don't have computer speakers so I only heard the first few lines on the radio and I felt a bit sorry for her because the guy was speaking in a think French accent and I couldn't tell who he was saying was the Canadian prime minister - didn't sound like Stephen Harper, but what the heck, those French can murder name. Then I read the transcript of the whole thing. Holy smokes!! Does she actually think that the leader of France is going to be talking to her about how hot his wife is in bed? And that was just the most blatant.

I really don't think she's dumb, just totally out of her depth. She probably was as Alaska's governor too, hence the ethical problems. However she is a rabble rouser.

About the extra time and Christmas

Whoever gets elected, my finances are still going to look sort of grim so I'd be happy to hear any ideas others have about low-cost Christmas gifts. I hate the early Christmas hype but low cost always takes more time so I'd best get started now. I can manage stuff for friends and neighbors with baked goods (not that inexpensive anymore) and herbal vinegars.

My problem is my three 20 something sons, they are not likely to get excited about herbal vinegars.
I maybe could knit or crochet something if my numb fingers would let me, but I need some ideas and maybe others do too.

How much did your Neulasta shot cost?

Mine were about 2900 per shot in 2006, neopogen was about 200 per shot. I picked them up at the hospital pharmacy and my husband gave me the shots. I have good insurance so I didn't have to pay anything extra. The regular Ontario health insurance doesn't cover drugs although there is a special fund for major costs like neulasta.
