Dental Work

Both my PS ,family dr and Dentist insist on a high dose of amoxacillin 1 hr prior to any dental cleaning etc. After I developed a infection in  my recosntructed breast with implant after a cortisone shot in my knee I also do the same before any invasive eg cortisone shots ,colonscopy etc..Having lost 2 expanders to infections I would personally not take a chance. I will also do the same before my nipple tattooing

Please help, just joined

Hi I was diagnosed with microcalcifications  almost 6 years ago I wasn't part of the 80%. if the 2nd mamogram is abnormal they will recommend a core biopsy .There is areally good info here on microcalcifications. Hang in there the chances are in your favour. see if you can get a prescribtion for ativan to help you sleep till you have more info. Good luck

Anyone taking AI (femara, aromasin, arimidex) past 5 years

Michelle sorry to hear your oncologist is pushing the clincal trial .Can you ask for a 2nd opinion with another  onc at a different facility. How about crossing the border to see if someone there might be more supportive to your continuing... how about your Gp. Why don't you try writing to Dr Goss after all he was the primary investigator and was in Toronto before moving to USA, he might have some suggestions. Also try posting on nosurrenderbreastcancer forum under Cutting Edge. Femara past the 5 yr mark?

There is evidence to support staying on AIs past thte 5 years but my onc wouldn't support it as he wanted me on clinical trials at the clinic which was a double blind trial which menat I woiudl have a 50% chance of being on or off the Femara. I However felt very strongly that I needed to stay on past 5 years. I found tons of written stuff from researchers that supported this. and indeed there was some info on talking to your dr about this on breastcancer.org last week i believe.ITook  all this information to another MD who is supportive of me staying on. I have had tons of side effects but  I beleive I am  NED at this time..because of Femara. There is another thread on this too under "Whats happening after 5 years."Good luck.

What's happening after 5 years?

leHi Janet re your post. Femara is an Aromatase inhibitor just like Arimedex. I will not be in any clinical trials to continue Ai after 5 years. i am stage 2 and after reading and researching feel very strongly that i need to continue.I turned down the 50/50 chance of receiving it and with all my documentation in hand found a caring MD who was willing tallow me to continue. i have my yearly mammogram/bone density/extensive blood work and we will reassess each year. My op ion is that like the MA!7 clinical trials they will rease the AI for extended use earlier than the 5 years of the trials. good luck

What's happening after 5 years?

Hi Janet i am concluding my 5 years.. stage 2. I feel very strongly that for me there is added vbenefit to staying on and chose not to take part in clinical trials. I i found a Dr who was willing to precribe Femara until the results of upcoming trials are released. Mrs b

Arimidex for Heart Patient?

I had a heart atack and pericarditis and myocarditis and suffer from congestive heart failure.all diagnosed 3 months before BC reared its head. I took Arimedex but switched to Femara due to joint pain both are Aromatose inhibitors. I finish my 5 years of adjuvent therapy including 4 plus years of Femara in a month. I had no problems with any changes in my blood lipids etc. Hope this helps. As far as I know the femara did its job and I will begin a clincical trial next month on taking 5 more years of Femara.mrs b

Saw Surgeon Today :-(

Hi Theresa my heart goes out to you. This really is the hardest time.I did much the same thing as you... it would seem like " the what ifs" were ever present . I  had had a heart attack prior to my diagsois and other heart problems so i developed chest pain. I was lucky a kind ER doctor after my 4 th visit sat down and we talked a long time and she recommended Ativan. I found music really helped me. I had favourite artist and I just played the same cd by the hour,,I would concentrate on the music and practice deep breathing, slowly I was able to manage a few minutes peace and quiet and then more. I would recommend a hypnosis tape also. Even though I was diagnosed with breast cancer I am 5 years and 6 months later, healthy. I still use the techniques I described when it is time for checkups etc.Husband have a difficult time too they are by their very nature Fixers and my hubby was the same. give them a list of stuff to do. i made my hubby the case manager and it was his job to keep track of all the appointments.. records notes. We would sit down the day prior to the surgeons etc visits and and write up the questions. I found it hard not to be emotional and frightened during the visits and hubby was so calm. My surgeon was rather cold and matter of fact but he came very highly recommended by the ladies. I grew to really like and trust him. He helped me make some terrific choices. Good luck this is a great board I wish I had found this when I was first diagnosed. Mrs B

I am completing my 5 year of Aamidex and fFemara and must admit i get irritated little more easily.  I usually just say I am crabby take myself of to a quiet spot and this helps. For me i just seem to get overstimulated..I was never like this before, as for the hair loss my hair dresser recommended Nioxin and I have had great results...thick hair and lots of new growth

Identity and late-night tears

LOrena what you are feeling is perfectly normal. I remember the first weeks after mastectomy and reconstruction were very difficult.I was well prepared I thought for the ramifications of surgery but I too had sad crying periods  it seemed to be worse at night when I was tired,Gradually you will come to accept this new body of yours and as the reconstructed breast continued to evolve with nipples and tattoos the more I accepted my new breasts. Now this is just my body..my husbands thinks my new breast is fabulous.I am 5 1/2 year survivor and when I look at my body I do not see the scars. I see just my beautiful whole body. This journey does get easier ;Best wishes Mrs b

How do I know if this is lymphedema

Thanks everyone. I always felt that i had sub clinical lymphodema from day 1 but was able to manage it with  intermittent use of sleeve and elevation. Everyone just said I had a frozen shoulder with arthritis  but things definitely changred when i came back from Florida this year,, area above lat flap wwas swollen, trunck was swollen ..had to keep my bra off for a week so it was evident to me that there had been progression. The over the shoulder sleeve was somenting the MLD therapist thought might be helpful but she too isn't convinced I need to use sleeve for more than excecise. She is optimistic that i won't have to get into wrapping and stuff so am I. I usually resposnd to massage therapy  of other parts of my body quickly and in a sustained manner so I am hoping that I will with MLD. Yes my freind did take notes and will come to a session to learn it herself as will my husband. I have been fortunate that I have followed  the LE threads here since diagnosis so am well versed in the prevention of infections, not using my at risk arm  for ivs etc etc All the best Mrs B
