Delayed recon. with Expanders after radiation

Yikes!  No responses....here's an update.  The dry part is pealing off to reveal baby soft skin...so feeling a litle more optimistic.  Has anyone heard a story of someone being sucessful in doing expansion 6 months after radiation which is the timeline my PS recommends?

Triple Negative IDC Started neoadjuvant chemo 2/08 4 dose dense A/C then 4 Taxol then Bilat surgery June 2008 Doing double mastectomy so I never have risk an new breast cancer in the future.

Delayed recon. with Expanders after radiation

Hi, has anyone had success doing delayed reconstruction with expanders after radiation?  I chose not to put in the expanders with my double mastectomy in June 08 and finished my rads a week ago.  Eveything under my scar line is fairly smooth but I have a 2 inch by 2 inch patch that is really rough on my chest and seems to be slowly peeling off.

I really don't want all that tram flap surgery.  I just can't take another major surgery.  I really want to just do expanders.   If you had success doing the expanders after the fact, please tell me your story.  I could really use some inspiration.  My PS said he would wait 6 months after my last rad before putting in the expanders and trying.  I've got a really good PS at Stanford but still I really need to hear some optomistic stories.

 Thanks      -Meg

Where are you directing your back LE?

You are all just so great...truly a life line in all this confusion.  I will continue moving downwards much softer and try to get my fiance involved.  I do want a good compression garmet....I'll google the ones you mentioned.

Where are you directing your back LE?

Mine is bilateral too....I should have mentioned that.  Also, my swelling is on both sides of my back.

Binney, are you stroking your hand accross your skin or sort of gently pulling the skin in one direction.  Are there two schools of thought on this?  I've tried the towel but maybe I'm pulling too deep...really just a light stroke there too?

Did it take a while for your back LE to be willing to cross the waist?   Mine just seems so stuck there and now I've noticed a hard spot...a sort of lump...just above the waist  in the swollen area.

Did it take a while for you to notice reduced swelling in your back?

Also, does the Belise compression bra work if you don't have boobs? Do they have a special bra for the boobless?  I wont reconstruct for about  a year.

Where are you directing your back LE?

I really need to hear where everybody is directing their swelling of their back.   My therapist was just directing it in toward my spine.  It doesn't seem to be helping.

The swelling began in the middle of my back at the level of my arm pits but over a month settled down (on it's own) just above my waist (on both sides of my back).  I feel like I want to continue to send it downward but it's not clear to me that it's willing to cross my waist.

If you have success, please give me a detialed blow-by-blow on where you send you back LE.

Binney, I have tried just massaging it downward toward my butt but it doesnt seem to go....should I do something first like clear my lower back and butt by masaging those areas downward first?

Do you all do the massage where you sort of pull the skin in the right direction as opposed to running the hand over the skin?  My therapist is telling me to sort of pull the skin in the right direction.

Is there a video out there that shows the methods including truncal LE methods?

MLD techniques

atw, do you mean that you are directing the back LE downward and toward the front of your body, toward your belly?  I really need help on where to direct my back LE....it started in the middle of my back but then over a month, dropped down to sit just above my waist.  It seems stuck there.  Can you describe this again....did I get it right?

Where do I take my Chemo if both arms have LE

Binney, I'm scheduled for my next chemo on Tuesday...what will I do?  How will I get a port in on time.  I took AC on my arm after it had already swollen and I felt the effects all over my body (very nauious, etc)....my veins in my hands look so good but I still need a port?  Do they need general anestesia?  Do I need my surgeon to get a port?

Need Good LE therapist in San Francisco Bay Area

Hi can anyone recommend a good, certified LE specialist (tried and true) anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I live near San Jose but San Francisco is fine also.  I really want a referral from another patient who has had good sucess with their therapist.

Thanks!

Where do I take my Chemo if both arms have LE

Both of my arms are swelling slightly (arm pits and back alot).  I was told that doing chemo in the leg is not safe.  I have taken chemo once in my arm since this started.  Does anyone ever do chemo anywhere else?  Can I take it in the ankle?  My chest is a bad site also because so much swelling near by.  My veins are good but just scared of triggering more swelling.

Triple Negative IDC Started neoadjuvant chemo 2/08 4 dose dense A/C then 4 Taxol then Bilat surgery June 2008.  Found cancer in 1 of 17 nodes so now 2 more A/C, then 4 carbo and Taxotere

Trunk Lyphedema??

I got my first swelling after wearing a mastectomy sports bra for three days.  I think the bra may have been the cause.  Now so many of us have swelling aroung the bra line.  Maybe that bra line is the trigger.  Should we be wearing a compression bra instead?

Binney, does it mean that they in the study (and I) have to wear a sleeve every day for the rest of their lives?

Also, I have 4 more rounds of chemo (carboplatin and taxotere) ahead of me and then radiation...how will I do all this?

instruction on how to wrap your hand and arm

Binney, when you said applied with gradient pressure, do you mean alittle tighter at the wrist and gradually less tight toward top of arm?

HELP! Sudden Bazaar Swelling

Binney, thank you so much for helping me!!!  I have a bunch of quesitons, sorry so many.

Is that position paper called "Treatment"?

If someone is certified does that not necessarily mean they have the right number of hours of training that you mentioned?

Also,  is it better that they be a CMT, PT, CLT, RN etc.  I don't even know what some of them stand for but they have them next to their names on the lists.

She had me doing my own manual drainage..at the appointment myself and sent me home to do it also.  It is too much for my arms.  Does that sound normal?

Binney, I think you mentinoed you have truncal LE...is it in your back or arm pits like mine?  Where do you direct your back LE to.  She told me to direct it to my front abdomen.  Please anyone with back LE let me know where to direct it (or to let the therapist).

Also although I have both arm pits not working, both swollen, she also told me to direct my right armpit across my chest toward my left arm pit.  Now I have slight swelling in my chest.  Does it make sence to use my chest as the route to the other swollen armpit?  What about when I have implants.....seems like a bad route now and later to me....please tell me what you think.

Sorry for so many questions...you are a true angel.

Also, what kind of test should the doctors have given me....they offered me NONE!

HELP! Sudden Bazaar Swelling

Binney, I really need your advice.  I was seen by a LE person and she gave me a really long list of steps to do myself.  At least a dozen and to do them takes like a half hour and really tires my arms (that I am supposed to be protecting).  I'd like to compare it to what you do since you are a pro by now I think.  It included placing my fingertips between my ribs next to my sternam to massage nodes there (horrible feeling)...  And massaging my left armpit nodes where I had surgery just 5 weeks ago.  It feels all wrong to me.

Also the sleeve she loaned me cuts into my upper arm badly when I realized that I took it off.  She laoned me another sleeve (quilted) and I wore it one night and was worse by morning.

I feel worse after doing all this not better.  I feel like my body is saying quit it....just rest.  Looking back on it I think the swelling was stable for the past week (forget the tummy part it turned out to be the stomach flu LOL).  Like I said stable for a week but now feels worse after doing all this stuff.  Do they have you doing all that?  Does it really work?  I took off the sleeve when I realized it cut in my upper arm so terrible...was that a good idea?

I'm on chemo and so soon after surgery...I feel like all this massaging is too much for my arms...feel like I should rest like I did after surgery.  Any advice?

Info Regarding Chemo Treatment

Hi Stornggirl, that sounds good to me...I actually had only 4 A/C and recently begged for 2 more...then I had taxol a cousin to Taxotere...I've heard of lots of triple negs doing well with Taxotere and I'm goin on that next.

I had one question...with the 6 a/c do you know are you getting 60 each time with a cumulative dose of 360?  Can you ask your oncologist for me or are you gettting less each time?

Is it every 2 weeks (dose dense) I do believe that is a good way to go.

Is the chemo survival rate only 3%

No No No Absolutely not true...that's a crazy thing you read.  I think it is rather rare to die from chemo....not sure what the stats are but just keep your fluids up, take your anti-nausea meds and if they offer you a nuelasta shot TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Who cares if it causes some aches...TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We are a blessed generation of chemo takers...so much to help us through it.

Urgent! Do they use A/C twice?

Thanks Gitane, I did finish my A/C but now I'm on to Carboplatin/Taxotere...the combo my oncologist wanted to use. I know, I'm a glutten for punishment.  I'm doing so much because as a triple negative there's no other treatment coming my way.

How bad is Carboplatin/Taxotere...anyone know?  Hope its better than AC!

HELP! Sudden Bazaar Swelling

I posted previously about swelling but it has gotten so strange so I want to describe it blow-by -blow.  Has anyone expereinced anything like this?  Is it LE or maybe Taxol swelling?

On June 4th, I had a bilateral with full disection of nodes on right side and just one node on left.  I finished Taxol 3 weeks prior to that.

On July 2nd my right arm swelled very slightly and ached.  It resolved by next morning but then repeated same symptons as day went on.

On July 4th, it hit me on my back.  I swelled a lot accross my back starting right behind the arm pits.    Then down my left arm but only slight swelling like my right arm.  My arm pit on right is also swollen.

Now it gets really weird.  My abdomen has swollen up today very siginificantly.  I look 5 months pregnant.  What the heck!!!!   When I press on the swollen areas, they bounce back...even if I hold my finger down a while.  If there is any indentation, I can't really see it.

Has anyone had such sudden swelling in so many places?

Does anyone know if the Taxol/Taxetere swelling tends to be permannat?  Is it like this?  I am scheduled to go on Taxotere/Carboplatin in just 2 weeks.  Yikes!!!

Could this be a blood clot?

I am seeing doctors tomorrow and went to the ER over the weekend but I'm not sure they'll have the answers....anyone ever heard of this?

Any thoughts would be a huge help.
