hair loss - how soon on A/C??

My head also tingled shortly before my hair started falling out on AC (at day 13). It actually hurt the last few days. I got it shaved to avoid  cleaning up all the hair (it was long). My regular hair stylist shaved my head after a long wash and head massage. I wasn't crying but she was. She refused any payment. I lost all body hair but my brows and lashes on AC. Taxol took the brows and thinned the lashes. I am happy to report that after finishing chemo in mid October, I had enough hair to go hatless/wigless by Christmas.

Tips for getting through chemotherapy

I don't know if it was mentioned elsewhere, but both my oncologist and a friend who was both a survivor and oncology nurse recommended eating a popsicle, or something else very cold, while being given adriamycin. Apparently there has been some inconclusive research indicating it prevents mouth sores. I never did get a single mouth sore so maybe it is effective.

Starting Chemo-every 2 wks or every 3??

Scrapmom, chemo every 2 weeks is considered dose dense chemo and it comes with it's own set of benefits and problems. It is believed to be a more aggressive treatment since the cancer cells have less chance to regroup. It is much tougher on the body. I found I would just start feeling better and it was already time for my next treatment. If you are treated every 2 weeks you will be given neulasta to build up your white cells faster. You will also probably become anemic at some point and need procrit.

Anyone experienced vision change while you are on chemo?

I was told that decadron, a steroid often used before and after chemo treatments, causes the cornea to swell. I was not able to read for several days after each treatment. I don't know if there can be long term effects. I know I have noticed a decrease in vision, but it could be age.

Would like to know....

milyla, I wish you well. I think I am just experiencing an infection since the swelling has responded to antibiotics. I know how tough it must be for you to wait . I was told I had breast cancer in June by my surgeon who then told me she was going on vacation for 2 weeks. I think I gained 10 lbs from stress eating and drinking during that period.

Would like to know....

I am really worried and could use some advice from some expert woman. I have some of the same symptoms of Milyla. My swelling began 2 weeks ago, right after I had a clean mammogram.  I saw my oncologist yesterday and he was very concerned. For this weekend they are are treating me for an infection although there is no clear cut reason why I would have one. I have been directed to call and come in this weekend if the swelling or redness increases at all.  I will be seen again on Monday. This is scary. I know that IBC is rare and I just finished aggressive chemo and radiation and I'm now taking tamoxifen. I remember my radiation oncologist asking me about IBC during our consult because my path report mentioned some skin involvement. That has never been my diagnosis. Can IBC come on that quickly, especially after treatment?

I'm bitchy, I moan, I groan.....anyway.

Hope you all don't mind a newbie jumping in. I'm back at work now and spend most of my day smiling at people and telling them I'm doing fine. In truth, no as a matter of fact, I don't love my hair, I was happy with the stuff I had before chemo. Everytime I began to believe things are finally going well, I get a new symptom, injury side effect. I was so clumsy from the joint pain from tamoxifen I managed to get a major steam burn, requiring wound care, on my wrist. That has healed and now my affected breast, side and rib area are all swollen and sore (seeing my oncologist today). I really am trying to be positive but a car breakdown and a  flat tire over the course of 2 weeks has put me over the edge. I am now officially sweating both the large and small stuff.

Body aches?

I also described the pains I was having the first few months of taking tamoxifen as "flu like". Everything hurt and I had a lot of muscle stiffness as well. I am happy to report that the aches have subsided.I am also noticing that my hot flashes are decreasing in number, but increasing in intensity. I finally received my prescription for effexor but I am not taking it since the monthy cost is outrageous.

anyone have cancer on the chest wall

I had cancer in the chest wall. In fact the tumor grew in the breast fold over into the breast wall, a very unusual place. I know that my surgeon ,while able to clear the margins in my chest, was not able to clear them to the accepted level. I did have my chest wall radiated.

I WANT MY MOJO BACK!

Thank you Deb and Marin for your encouraging words.

I have scheduled an appointment with a woman gyn to see if I can deal with some of the physical issues. I keep getting yeast infections which isn't helping anything. My pcp gave me a prescription for testosterone cream. If I could remember to use it maybe it would help. I'm sure that a big part of the problem is age. I am 53. I was sailing along happily arrogant in my mistaken belief that I was a healthyand vibrant woman in her 50's, successfully dodging menopause symptoms with my estadiol cream. Chemotherapy and tamoxifen have taken away those delusions.   Meanwhile my husband has scheduled a romantic weekend away . We tried this in December and it seemed to help, although I was somewhat burned from radiation at that point.

I know I need to give it time. I tend to be impatient with myself though. Paula

I WANT MY MOJO BACK!

I thought it was just me. I also think my having cancer scared my husband so much his libido was stolen as well. Some of this conversation gave me hope.

Fpr those who have been on Tamox and Arimidex

I have been taking tamoxifen for 2 months now. My weight stayed very stable while doing chemo ( even given an acute nausea reaction and eating very little for the week after treatment)  and rads, but I have lost 4.5 lbs since starting tamoxfen. I think the drug probably effects people differently. My hair is not thinning. I look like a poodle with the curls that have grown in . Hot flashes have gotten worse but joint stiffness and pain has gotten better.

lumpectomy and reconstruction

I have my cosmetic surgery consultation next week. My breast surgeon thought a breast lift to both sides  and a reduction on the normal breast would fix the problem. I'd rather not have an implant. I think my tumor was in an unusual place for breast cancer ( inside breast fold and chest wall) so it should be easy to repair.

Hi ladys

I hope you continue to do well with your radiation treatments. I got through 35 treatments with minimal skin effects and fatigue. I even went back to work near the end, something I could have never done while doing dose dense chemo. I haven't done so well with tamoxifen. I did have joint pain and I am experiencing about 15 hot flashes a day. I don't mind the day flashes but the ones at night wake me up. On a positive note, I have lost 4 1/2 lbs since I started tamoxifen about 7 weeks ago. I haven't changed anything else in my life so it has got to be the medication. Maybe it is water loss from sweating.

Bottle 'o Tamoxifen

Harley, Thanks for replying. I have never heard about effexor interfering with tamoxifen. Regarding hot flashes, I did have some success in reducing them  after chemotherapy using Peridin-C. It was given to me by my radiation oncologist. It doesn't seem to be working so well now that I am taking tamoxifen but maybe it would help you.

Bottle 'o Tamoxifen

I started tamoxifen a few months ago after a lumpectomy, chemo, and radiation. I too experienced joint pains and stiffness which seem to be better now. Hot flashes are a real problem. I have been prescribed effexor but my oncologist is still doing battle with my insurance company to get it approved. Does it really help? I am worried that it causes insomnia. I don't sleep well now. I saw a comment from someone that she needs ativan to sleep. I thought that was only me.
