Hello All -

Just wanted to share that my Mom's pathology report came back clear -  clear margins, no lymph node involvement.  Major relief for all.  She will heal a bit and then go through radiation treatment.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  Very thankful to have both Mom and my breast cancer caught early and behind us.

average age of triple neg/and fund raise

My Mom was diagnosed at 76!  Quite the surprise for her surgeon.

HI all -

I'm in Florida with Mom & Dad for a few days.  Mom just had her lumpectomy & SNB Tuesday so is somewhat sore but otherwise doing fairly well.  I'm annoyed with the hopsital as for some reason the nuclear medicine "didn't take" so they removed extra lymph nodes - total number yet TBA although the doctor indicated "not all".  Not feeling so good about him now either.  Hopefully it won't be a problem.  They at least automatically referred Mom to a lymphedema education program.

Harley - while I haven't tried it myself, I hear those bean bag type heating and cooling packs are very good.  The ones you can put in the microwave to warm or the freezer to cool.  Is it actually rice inside?

Triple Negs - Fall 2008 Update

Nancy -  You seem to be doing everything you can to help yourself.  It's so hard going through tests and waiting for results. Sending you lots of hugs.

Amber -  My Vit D level was a 10!  I really can't believe it even though I am not much of a milk drinker as I have been taking a multivitamin daily for years.  Also, I was tested in July and I had been driving the convertible with the top down every chance I could - without being overly sunscreened.  I wonder if there might be something about breast cancer that causes the reduction in vitamin D levels.  Just hypothesizing, no info to suggest that is the case.

Michelle - welcome.  Assume you've been identified as at risk if you are on tamox as prevention.  Think my sister may be headed that way soon.  I had a pretty easy time of things my first 3 months and then went through a bout of night sweats for several weeks that seem to be settling sdown again.  I wouldn't be overly concerned. Lots of people seem to manage well without recurrence.  Stay on the meds.

Triple Negs - Fall 2008 Update

My Mom was recently diagnosed as TN (calcifications).  She's mid-70s so I guess that makes it even more uncommon.  While I went through my own journey earlier this year (can't believe both of us in the same year!), I was ER+/PR+ so know much more about that than what she now is facing.  Having her surgery next Tuesday - lumpectomy with SNB to be followed by radiation.  Any suggestions?

Virginia -  Yes, I am just taking OTC vitamin D currently.  getting 400IUs per day in my multi-vitamin and then taking an additional 1000 IUs in a separate pill.  I'm taking Nature Made's Vit D which is "smaller easier to swallow" (yeah!) and "formulated for easy absorption" (with calcium carbonate).  The Vit D pill is smaller and has less of a taste impact than what I remember of calcium supplements.  Bought it at Costco; can't remember the cost.

Anne -  Congrats on finishing your 5 years!

Virginia -  I'm on Vitamin D supplements now also.  Pushed to have my level checked after seeing some of the study results.  Found out I was significantly deficient so went on mega doses for 6 weeks (50,000 IU once per week).  Once that was completed, I went to 1400 IU each day.  Will test my level again in December to see where my current status is and adjust from there.

My routine follow-up with the surgeon got post-poned so will now see her AFTER my next mammogram and chest x-ray - although not likely sufficiently after for her to receive the reports.

Some bad news to report.  Unbelievably, after just having gone through BC myself this year, my Mom was diagnosed with it.  She's triple negative which I understand is a bit odd for someone her age (mid-70s).  She's having surgery next Tuesday.  Seems to be doing relatively well and has some good doctors.  In a weird way, my having been through it so recently has been helpful for her.

Barbie - I like the way you think!  Enjoy your spa trip.  DH and I had to post-pone a cruise for my surgery so I selected the sail away date as my one year anniversary of learning my diagnosis.  Can't think of a better thing to do than to sail away one year later.

A good story to share... DH and I hosted a party Sunday to thank all the wonderful people who helped us during my illness.  They were there when we really needed them, and the party gave us a chance to be together to celebrate where I am today.  The house was full of people.  It was really a joy.

Sorry to hear of the difficulties some are having.  I went through about 3 weeks of heavy night sweats after almost 3 months of very limited side effects.  Not sure if the night sweats will continue or subside.  I guess time will tell.

Munchy -  first semester off at college is a tough adjustment for so many.  I hope things work out well for your daughter.  Take care of yourself.

Murph -  I'm just ahead of you with the mammo; going on Nov 28th.  This will be the first time on my "other side" since they found what turned out to be a benign lump last year -found that when doing the MRI as part of the investigation that identified my cancer.

Question for all who got their period back - does it actually come monthly or on some other schedule?  I had mine after chemo and before starting tamoxifen, then nothing during my first 3 months on tamox but just got it again this week.  None of my doctors seem concerned so I guess I shouldn't worry - just would like a better idea of what to expect.

My GYN suggested Black Cohosh for managing hot flashes.  Anyone try that?  I've been fortunate to be able to handle the periodic ones I am experiencing so haven't tried anything yet.

Harley -  I am in Research & Development for a major food and beverage company.  Literally work to develop new products/formulations.

Just stopping by to say hello and wish everyone a great day.  I'm on my first real business trip since returning to work after BC.  Two back to bacjk conferences - in Las Vegas.  Been walking miles each day between the Expo Halls, the size of the hotels here and doing some sightseeing.  Treated myself last night to see "Menopause the Musical".  If you haven't seen it, put it on your list.  I laughed all the way through it!

Take care all.

Sharon S -  Good to hear from you.  Having been on the same chemo schedule, I feel a special bond!  I'm doing pretty well.  Haven't yet been able to integrate my old life (working full-time at a job that also requires a 40 minute commute each way) with the changes I need to help keep BC away.  Gotta figure that out.

Deb -  It is actually my DH that graduated from Maryland rather than me.  Believe he was a '86 grad.

Amber - what level of CoQ10 do you take each day?

Mary - I've been one of the fortunate ones with limited SEs since starting Tamoxifen at the end of July.  Just like so much of the other aspects of our BC paths .... Everyone is different.

Thanks for the info Layne.  My cholesterol hovers around 250.  PCP was about to start me on Lipitor when I was diagnosed with BC; said to take care of that first and then we would revisit ....

I think I missed that you are in the Washington area.   Will be nearby in about a month as DH and I are headed to Homecoming weekend at the Univ of Maryland.

Anyone in Las Vegas?  Headed there for two conferences in a few weeks.

Hi All -  Been off the boards for quite awhile but thinking of all of you and hope this post finds you doing well.  I have not caught up on the posts other than the last 2 pages.

Virginia - sorry to have heard about your father.  There never is a good time.  I hope there is comfort in having been able to visit with him before his passing and with the memories of happy times together.

Ellen -  I wish there were a way we could send you some electricity.  Can't imagine power being out for that long.  Glad you are safe.  Right attitude about "stuff" being able to be replaced.  Hang in there.

Layne -  interested in hearing more about your experience with Lipitor.  Now that active treatments are behind me for BC it is time to deal with my high cholesterol ....

I'm taking 20mg of Tamox each night and continuing to do rather well.  Most common SE is that I tend to be red-faced a fair amount although not really having hot flashes per se.  Do have an occasional night sweat.  Other than that, I haven't had a period since starting Tamox.  Anyone else have that experience?

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?

Hi Ladies - Just thought I would pop back in to let all of you who are currently in treatment know that there really is life after treatment.  I had my last chemo on April 30th and finished radiation on July 10th.  Hair came back in nicely - still a bit shorter than I used to wear it but definitely respectable.  Been on Tamoxifen since end of July and fortunately not having many SEs with that ither.  This board was my lifesaver going through treatment.  I wil always be gratetful to the women who shared their experiences to make "the journey that none of us wanted to take" easier.

If I can be of any help, send me a message.  I'm working full-time again and up to my eyeballs in volunteering so not on the boards that much anymore.

Wishing you all an easy time of your treatments.

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?

Kim -  My brows thinned significantly but did not all go away.  As for lashes, I lost some - mostly on the bottom lid but kept most of the rest.  Brows were back to the point of needing to be waxed about 2 months after my last Tx.

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?

Drea -  I, too, had an onc that said as long as I had good veins, no need to go with a port for 4 TX of TC.  Infusion sticks were on the back of my hand and uneventful.  Did have to have the additional sticks for blood work in between TX.  Worked well for me.

TX66 - I used a nail strengthener during chemo and had no really weitrd things happen to them.  Did have some faint horizontal lines associated with each Tx.  My last chemo Tx was 4/30 and I finished radiation on 7/10.  Interestingly, in the past two weeks I have noticed a series of white specs have appeared toward the top (cut) end of several of the nails.  Not sure what that's about - perhaps just some dry spots.  Key is that I never lost any of the nails or ahd them turn weird colors.

Who started Tamoxifan in July?

Hi ladies.  I, too, started on tamoxifen recently.  Only had one night (so far) of waking up due to a hot flash but routinely waking up trhoughout the night.  I take 20mg just before bed.  I'm 47 this next month, did chemo and rads, was premenopausal and believe it or not, got my period back.  Got mixed feelings about that last part.  Sent a note to my Onc about the sleep issues so waiting to hear back before trying Melatonin or anything else.

Take care all.

Virginia - my office is right in Tarrytown, just off the first exit on the East side of the TZB.  Let me know if you are headed my way.  I live about 30 miles North of there.

Harley -  I know it is much easier said than done, but try not to get too far ahead (mentally) of your actual test results.  Investigate the issues and deal with the facts rather than the what ifs as much as possible.  Tests really are our friends - mostly they confirm we are ok and if they ID a problem, it is better to find it sooner than later.

Thinking of all the rest of you too.  Hoping for goods days for all!

"Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips" is a good read for any "younger" folks.  Definitely an irreverent look at having and surviving cancer.    Highlights some amazing young ladies and their stories - many have founded organizations that are helping other young (adult) cancer patients.  Some good tips as well.

VirginiaNJ - are you at the Englewood Cliffs offices?  If so, our offices are relatively close as I am on the East side of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

So far I'm doing ok with Tamox.  Some back pain which may actually be from overdoing it at the gym the other day and then trouble sleeping but not much else.  Hoipe I'll be abel to say that in another few weeks!
