Tests, Treatments & Side Effects + Help Me Get Through Treatment, Created: Jun 2, 2008 01:51 pm
What kinds of side effects have y'all had?Hello Everyone: I was diagnosed December 6 on the day before my grandson was born. Since then I have had 3 lumpectomies and four treatments of Adriamycin, Cytoxan and Taxotere. I did pretty well with the first two but the fourth one kicked my butt. I have no nausea but severe headaches, heartburn, and a general feeling weakness. I have been having them every three weeks. My next will be June 10 and my last July 1. I guess I will have a few weeks before my bi lateral mastectomy. I will then have 5 days a week radiation under my arm for 6 weeks. I will be so glad when this night mare is over!! God bless all of you that are going through this terrible disease! Please respond if you have had these drugs. Sincerely, Bi Bibbie Dx 12/12/2007, IDC, 4cm, Stage IIIa, Grade 2, 6/18 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

chemo drugsHello Ladies: This post is great. It seems everone has a different story, or are on different chemo drugs. I started in February 2008 with Adriamycin, cytoxan and Taxatere. I go every 3 weeks and as the treatments have increased so have my symptoms. The decadron makes me not sleep and I feel very "out of it and tired. Is anyone taking all three together and if so have are the side effects? I will have a total of 6! Best of luck to all! SGAP Questions??Hello Everyone: It seems we are all in this together. I would love to hear how things are going with you all. I am stage IIIa and am getting ready to have my third chemo which consists of Adramycin, cytocen and taxotere. I have been lucky with the side effects. I am a bit more tired and have constipation and of course hair loss. I will have to have the free flap procedure after my bi lateral mast. I was misdiagnosed. We thought it was an early stage 1.3cm tumor but it turned out to be a 4.5cm with 6 positive lymph nodes. I will have 6 rounds of chemo and 6 weeks of radiation as well as hormone therapy. I will have the third chemo on Tuesday April 29. I have had 2 opinions and one physician recommended a mastectomy and the other team of physicians at UNC School of Medicine recommended a lumpectomy. It was a diaster!! I had to have three re-excisions to get clear margins. I now have half a breast. The first Dr. I saw recommends mastectomy after I finish chemo. UNC recommends chemo, radiation and then mastectomy and reconstruction. I am so worried and confused. I already have had several breast surgeries and am not a candidate for tissue expanders, DIEP, LATT or anything other than the newest Gluteal procedure. Has anyone had this? What are the scars like? Are you pleased with the procedure? What was the recovery like? I am getting a third opinion at DUKE in early May. Please help with any advise available. Best of luck to all of us going through this horrible disease. WE WILL BEAT IT!!! Sincerely, Vivian Watkins Dx 12/12/2007, IDC, 4cm, Stage IIIa, Grade 2, 6/18 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Headaches and Chemo?Hello: I would like to know if any one is experimenting headaches? I am a chronic migraine headache sufferer but my headaches have been different lately. They are not as bad as a migraine but they still affect my day. If anyone has similar problems please let me know. I am also an unusual BC patient. I had silicone implants put in 1988 above the muscle. I had no problems at all but had them removed 3/2005. They both had calcified and were leaking. At that time the physicians did a biopsy on both breasts and both tested negative for cancer. I did have complications because I had an infection as well as nipple necrosis of the left breast. My mammograms were negative as well until November 2007. A tumor was palatable and diagnosed in December 2007. I had a plastic surgery diaster and the breast lift and explantation left a lot of scar tissue. I wanted a bilateral mastectomy from the time I was diagnosed but was talked into a lumpectomy. The physicians thought from all my tests which include CT's of Head, lungs, abdomen, MRI of both breats and abdomen, bone scan, muga scan and Xrays that I had an early stage Invasive carcinoma. After 3 lumpectomies, I found that I had 6 positivde lymph nodes as well as a 4.6 cm tumor in my right breast. It took 3 lumpectomies to "clear the margins". I now am facing 6 chemos's as well as a bilateral mastectomy and 6 weeks of radiation. This is a real problem because I am not a candidate for any tissue addition other than my own breast tissue. I am afraid that if I have the radiation before the DM that the tissue will not be able to be expanded. I am uncertain whether to have the tissue expanders and DM after the chemo or wait until after the radiation. Please help if anyone has been through this or knows what would be the best plan of treatment, please let me know. I appreciate all the help I can get and I pray for each and everyone going through this pain. GOD BLESS, Bibbie |

From Stage 1 to stage III aHello: I was diagnosed with IDC on December 6, 2007. After a core biopsy I was told I was probably a stage 1 with a 1.3 cm tumor in the right breast. After CT's, bone scans, Xrays, MRI's, muga scan etc. I went for a second opinion at a well known teaching hospital and was talked into a lumpectomy. I knew in my mind that I would need a bi lateral mastectomy but went ahead with the lumpectomy. The first lumpectomy was done as well as a sentinel node biopsy. All 3 nodes were positive. The next step was another lumpectomy with a complete lymph node dissection. There were 3 more positive nodes and the tumor was said to be 3.9cm with positive margins. Next another lumpectomy to try to get the margins clear! Yeah, they are finally clear but I have half a breast. The tumor was around 4 cm with 6 positive lymph nodes which makes me a stage III a. Because of prior cosmetic breast surgery and the scar tissue, they want me to have 6 chemo treatments over 16 weeks, 6 weeks of radiation and hormone therapy. After all of this a bi lateral mastectomy with tissue expanders. I am very concerned that this will not work with the radiated tissue. I am not a candidate for any flap Reconstruction. Please help if anyone knows about this or has been through this. I am 98er+ and 84%pr+ her2-. Thanks to anyone who may be able to help. Many Thanks, Bibbie |

Anyone had chemo and radiation before bi lateral mastectomy?Sorry, I should have titled this another title. I have confused as to how common it is to have chemotherapy and radiation before your mastectomy. Sorry for the confusion. I have had two different opinions and I am uncertain which way to go??? I was diagnosed by a Dr. on December 6, 2007. I was told I was not a candidate for a lumpectomy due to my previous surgeries and scar tissue. Even though at that time I was a stage 1, tumor 1.3 cm, he said I needed a bi lateral. I was talked into getting another opinion and went to a very large Medical School Teaching University. After the breast team of a number of physicians reviewd all my tests, preformed another mammogram and Ultrasound of the right breast, they all recommended the lumpectomy which I was not in favor of having. I re-visited the first surgeon and he was surprised that I went through 3 lumpectomies. He said I should have a bi lateral after chemo and then radiation. He also said I may never be able to have a successful reconstruction. I am very uncertain what to do or whom to talk to about this. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Many Thanks, Bibbie |

Anyone had chemo and radiation before bi lateral mastectomy?Hello Everyone: I am in a situation that is somewhat unusual and I am very scared! I have had several breast surgeries before my IDC was diagnosed. I had an augmentation in 1990 with silicone implants above the muscle. I had them removed in 2005 with a breast lift. I had complications and ended up with infections and necrosis of the Left nipple. They both had calcified and were leaking but I never had any problems. The mammograms were all negative before the implants were removed but in December I was diagnosed with IDC. I was told after a MRI, bone scan, CT scans, ultrasounds and mammograms that I had a stage 1 cancer of around 1.3 cm. It took 3 lumpectomies to get clear margins and I had 6 positive lymph nodes and the tumor turned out to be around 4.6 cm. I know have half a breast and the whole time I wanted a bi lateral mastectomy! Now the Dr's say that because of my previous surgeries and the scar tissue that I will 6 chemos over 16 weeks and 6 weeks of radiation. I have had one so far. I am ER+ and PR + Her2-. I was told that I could not have tissue expanders before the radiation. I now will have to wait to have the mastectomies and reconstruction after the chem, rad, etc. I am afraid that I will not have enough tissue to have reconstruction and I am not a candidate for any trans flap. I will have to use the breast tissue that I have left. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it!!! Sorry this is so long. God Bless all that have to suffer from this dreadful disease!! Sincerely, Bibbie |

So confused. 3 lumpectomies Please helpPlease if anyone has had this happen please respond. It's a long story but I will try to condense. I had silicone implants over the muscle put in 21 years ago. I am now 51 years old and had them removed in March 2005. The both had calcified and were ruptured. They were removed with some of the tissue which was sent to pathology. They both were negative. I had a breast lift with no implants at that time. After a problemwith pain medicine a Dr. on call told me to take Motrin for pain. A day later the nipple started turning brown and bleeding. I later had necrosis of the nipple and an infection. I went in for my yearly exam on November 28, 2007 with my gynocologist and she felt a tumor in my right breast. I promply had a mammogram and ultrasound. They showed some abnormalities so I had a core biopsy on December 5. I got the news that the biopsy showed that I have Invasive carcinoma ductal type. The physician said he did not think I would be a candidate for a lumpectomy due to previous scar tissue from past surgery. I was totally shocked because I have no cancer in my family. I had decided to have a bi lateral mastectomy. After talking to friends and family, I decided to get a second opinion at UNC school of medicine. I took all of my tests which include CT of brain, Renal, MRI of breasts,Bone scan, chest and pelvis Xrays as well as 2 mammograms and 2 ultrasounds and a liver ultrasound. I have had 3 lumpectomies in one month because this is what UNC decided with a advisory board of 30 physicians. The cancer that was said to be early stage and no more than 1.3 cm turned out to be around 4.6 cm with 6 positive lymph nodes. The margins were finally cleared after 3 lumpectomies. I am very upset because I wanted a bi lateral from the start. I was misdiagnosed. Now I am facing chemo, radiation and then a bi lateral mastectomy and reconstruction. I am ER and PR positive Her negative. I am wondering why I need the chemo and radiation. I have 4 children and 2 grandchildren and have too much to live for.I am a stage III a.T2, N1, M0. Please I beg for help from anyone who may know. I am scared to death. Thanks so much! |

help...mastectomy or lumpectomy w/radiation???Hello: I am new to the board. I have no history of Breast cancer. I am 51 years old and was diagnosed with Invasive mammary ductal breast cancer on December 6 after a core biopsy. I am 98% positive for estrogen and 85% for progesterone. Her was negative. The physician said I was not a good candidate for a lumpectomy. I decided to have a bi lateral mastectomy. I had breast augmentation over the muscle 21 years ago after breast feeding 4 children. I had them removed in March 2005 along with a breast lift. At that time both the silicone implants had ruptured and calcified. Tissue from both breasts were sent to pathology and came back benign. I decided to have a second opinion at UNC school of medicine. I have had a bone scan, MRI of both breasts, CT scan of the brain, and renal area. I have also had an ultrasound of the liiver. After the breast team of 30 Dr.s reviewed all my tests as well as another mammogram and ultrasound: they all decided that a lumpectomy plus rad. would be the best for me. They all believed that the tumor was 1.3 cm. After much apprehension, I decided to have the lumpectomy with a sentinol biopsy. This was January 14. The results were shocking. I had 3 positive lymph nodes and the tumor was around 3.9 cm. I had so much scarring from previous surgeries and this impaired the surgeon to get all of the tumor. I went in on January 21 for a complete lymph node dissection and another lumpectomy. They found 3 more positive nodes. The margins are still not clear. I am absolutely devastated and worried to death. After being told by so many physicians that I had early stage cancer. I had another surgery on February 13 to clear the margins which they finally did! I know have half of a breast and a deep hole under my arm. I will be having chem, radiation and then a mastectomy and reconstruction. Iam now a stage III a. The Dr.s want a CT of the liver and chest. I am having a hard time understaning why?? Please if anyone can give me advise or have had a simular problem I would appreciate any help that you can offer.` |
