need support pleasehey all i just found out my sis has kidney cancer, and has to have her kidney removed due to mass being so large. she has a "something" on her lung too, however they don't know if that is cancer yet. all of this, after she got a clean mammogram (check up at my request due to my bc dx)! i know this isnt bc, but her dx is worse than mine. she has alreadly been told she needs surgery, then rads and chemo. i dont know what to do. i am completely devastated. she is my best friend and came to stay with me for 2 weeks after i had my bi-lat mx. she lives in another state, far from me. i just need some support or /and advice on what to do to help her get through this. i need to be there where she is, and i dont know how to make that happen. does anyone know of a good place to get accurate knowledge about kidney cancer?? a forum maybe like this?? if anyone out there can help me, please, please let me know. thank you so much. all my blessings to all of you. |

Am I just freaking out?Hey gals, Well, I went to my doctor yesterday, and after examination, she told me she is 99% sure it is Carotidynia. She said it isn't very common ( imagine that?). Nothing is swollen at all.Apparently nothing to do with the surgery as most of you indicated. "Carotidynia is considered by most authors to be a unilateral deep-seated neck pain radiating to the ear and face and aggravated by head movements, swallowing, chewing, coughing, yawning, and sneezing. " Steroids will help it heal quicker, and she wrote me a prescription for it, however I am hesitant to take it yet without speaking with NOLA if it is okay. For now, I am taking hydro for pain relief, and using warm compresses. Just to be on the safe side, as my temp was slightly elevated, she took blood work and ordered an ultrasound of the neck area, over the artery, which I am scheduled for Tuesday after I get off work. She also told me to monitor my temp, wrote me a script for antibiotics, and told me to fill it if my temp went up, to fill out. So , there we have it, Thanks for all of your concern, I will keep in touch. My grandkids are here now, I need to fly!! Hugs to all, and God Bless Warmly, Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

Am I just freaking out?Hi gals! As you know I have had a bilat with DIEP on June 4 at NOLA. I went back to work Monday half days.Yesterday, I woke up with pain in my right gland (I suspect) under my jaw. This morning, it was worse. Tonight, it is so painful, it woke me up. It HURTS and the pain originates from the right side of the front or so of my neck, up through to my right ear. And it hurts just when swallowing saliva, but ONLY on that right side. I know it may sound crazy, but I have NEVER had pain like this before. Even when I had strep throat. I mean the pain was very close to bringing me to tears. Do you think this would have anything to do with my surgery? Associated with it at all? Or do you think it's just something coming on since I returned to work , and have been exposed to ALOT more people than I have in the last 6 weeks? Should I call NOLA and tell them? I'm not sure what to do. I have an appt with my local primary doctor on Friday and of course will bring this up. Just wanted some opinions, feedback, etc, from any of you. I seem to always want to come here first! What do you think? Am I overthinking? Thanks everyone!!! Take care and God Bless! Hugs, Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

Foobs hurt 5 wks out bi mxHi gals, I had a bi lat mx, immediate recon DIEP June 4. My foobs still hurt. Sometimes to the point I cannot sleep. I thought foobs are suppose to be numb? They hurt just to touch them. Do you think this is normal? I have an email sent to NOLA, regarding this, and hope to hear back from them tomorrow. Office was closed when I sent the email. I know I probably sound paranoid, but I can't help it. Anyone else with the same surgery experience pain, not just uncomfortableness, this far out from surgery? Any ideas as to why this is painful and not numb? Sides are numb feeling in areas. Thank you. God Bless Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

Toilet Items suggestions for after surgeryYoung79 Boy I wished I knew this before my bi-lateral mx DIEP!!! Girls, I would definately heed Young79;s advice. I was never told I would not be able to reach "behind" of my own bum, until the day I had to. Not cool. I DID have to subject my poor hubby for help. He said he didn't mind, but I felt absolutely horrible about it. Get the Lav-aid ! I definatey would have had I know I was going to need it. Ironic, I had my bi-lateral surgery the same day you posted this topic. Great advice young79!!! God bless. Warmly,Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

Connecting With Others Who Have a Similar Diagnosis + DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ), Created: Jul 8, 2008 07:01 pm
Guilty for "just DCIS?"Hey girls, Just wanted to update. Late I know, but just the same..lol. I have had my bi-lateral mx with DIEP on June 4 at NOLA. I will be 5 weeks out from surgery tomorrow. I'm glad with the decision I made. More dcis was found after mx than what originally suspected and additional atypical ductal hyperplasia as well. The decision was right for me. Now, time will do the healing for this stage. Going back to NOLA in February 09 for second stage. After going through this, with minor setbacks to boot, I'm not sure I feel guilty as I did prior to this "treatment." For me, I wanted the most agressive route, and took it. I still feel very deeply for any woman (man) who has had to endure chemo. And yes, I do still wonder if the woman who have endured chemo, think less of me as a bc "sister" because I was able to make the chemo detour. I do wonder what bc "sisters" think of me after they realize, yes, I've had the tests, the MRI, the biopsies, and the surgery , BUT never had to endure chemo and its side effects. Never had to lose my hair. Or vomit from the poison. Or enter early menopause. None of that. So, I guess it's not so much of my feeling guilty of myself as much as it once did, but leans more now to; what do my bc "sisters" who have endured so much more than I, feel about me? Anyhoo, just my thoughts for the moment. Sorry to get so carried away. God bless all of you, and take care. Ah pooh, just realized I wrote my mx info in my signature prior to this. Sorry for the duplication of information. Warmly, Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

Missouri girls out there?susanmcm, Wow! I had no idea we live so close to each other! Small world as the saying goes. I think that would be nice to get together after a bit. There is another woman from Missouri who is on this site, however has not posted here so I will not say. But, it would really be cool if we could figure a way to get all of together on a date and place that would fit into our lives. Mission impossible right? Nah! Anything is possible!! Thanks for all the replies, I hope more girls come out!! God Bless, Dottie Bi-lateral mx DIEP June 4,2008 |

"Doggie Ears" at 2nd Stage DIEPHey girls, Does anyone know how NOLA handles the hip "doggie ears" at stage 2, left from stage 1? I'm wondering, do they cut them and skin graft? Do they re-opened the incisions at the hip ends and ,cut the excess and re-suture? Does anyone know? What else exactly do they do at stage 2? Would anyone who has been there done that , please let me know? Thanks a million! PS Used to be Mumsy, changed username to Iamblessed, because that's how I feel. Brown tape for scarsQuestion? When you use the tape, do you place it horizontally across ab incision, and vertically on breast incisions? Or do you you use it like a butterfly stitch with many short pieces crossing vertically over horizontal incisions? Just want to make sure that when i can start using it, I am doing it right. Thanks gals! Dottie Warmly, Dottie |

In Recovery in NOLAHI Wendy! I"m so happy to hear you are home and recovering!! Sorry you had to go back under the knife, that is definately a bummer. Noone wants to have to do that. Hope you are doing better and better every day and getting stronger. It will be 5 weeks out for me tomorrow and I am struggling with energy, and my breasts being sore. I'm on my third round of antibiotics for my abdominal incision. Other than that, things are slowly but surely coming together. I have to walk more though. How are you doing at this point? Do you have any drains left ? I wonder why youd didn't receive the girdle from NOLA? Are they going to send you one later, maybe through the mail? They sure help alot once drains are removed. I actually still wear mine, it just makes me feel "safer" if that makes any sense. Did you have a SNB? It was on my surgery plan, but told them I did not want to have that done. They went over the reasons why they would do it, as wanted to make sure I was clear with the reasons before I made my decison. I decided not to do it. Anyhoo, I sure hope you are doing well. I haven't been to the board much lately. Sorry for that. When you're up to it, if you'd like. let me know how you'e doing okay? God Bless. Warmly, Dottie Warmly, Dottie |

Missouri girls out there?Hey girls! It's been a long while I know. I live just outside of Springfield, about an hour or so from Branson. I'm familiar with Table Rock Lake. Must be cool delorisann to leave just a block from the lake. I used to live that close to Lake Champlain where I grew up in Vermont. I am four weeks out from a bilateral mx, DIEP reconstruction. Some days great, others not so much. I am learning against my nature, to be patient..:0) I believe I went to the best place for my treatment, NOLA. I am blessed that I got to bypass radiation due to mx, and no chemo due to such an early cancer. Right now, just home healing and trying to get well again. Hope this finds all of you well. God bless all of you. God Bless, Mumsy Warmly, Dottie Dx 4/7/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

NOLA "Club"... are YOU a member?Hi Susan G! Cant sleep so thought I would reply, just saw your post! I am doing okay, thank you. It's three weeks out from surgery, will be four on Wednesday , the 2nd of July. My "foobs" are real sore, but to be expected! And my energy is sapped!! But again, to be expected. I am getting around, albeit slowly, and will be increasing my daily walks each week as time progresses. So far, I do like the results of my "foobs." I have to wait until the scabs on my incisions heal before I can use any lotion or tape on the incisions. NOLA has already sent me the tape and today I bought Palmers cocoa butter in anticipation of using it. I have to admit, my stomach is so TIGHT! Its gotten better of course since day 1, however still restricting for me. And I can at least reach my you know what after you know what in the "john." Couldn't do that at first!! LOL! I did get a nasty stomach virus ( family had it too) my first week home from surgery which put me in ER for hours receiving fluids, a shot and medicine to take home. It was horrible. Thank God it only last a couple of days. It had me in tears. Not good. Glads its over. I also was treated with antibiotics as well as my ab incision became red. Sent pics to NOLA and they immediately prescribed antibiotics and advised me to put bedadine on the incisoin 2-3 times a day to help with the redness. Anyhoo----just a bit of advice for those still to have this type of surgery or any flap surgery, don't hang around anyone you think even for a moment might be harboring some sort of virus. Anything at all. Immune system will be down, and it will be too easy to "catch" something. With this type of surgery you need to stay well to heal well. Any questions, feel free to ask, or pm me if you like. I dont come on too much lately as I am conentrating on healing but I will come on occasionally to check for questions so I can answer anyone who needs help, if I can help. God Bless all of you!!!!! Warmly, Dottie |
