Help with Hysterectomy

Thank you ladies. You are making me feel better.

I am not afraid of pain or hotflashes. That is not my fear. It is the hormonal thing that scares me. I just feel like there is no going back. I mean once they take everything, that's it. If I feel crappy, there are no choices for me until I get past it all which can be up to 10 years.
Yes, I was ER+ and PR+ plus BRCA2+. What a doozy huh?
I just need to know I am not going to become crazy. I am absolutely terrified of this whole thing.

Help with Hysterectomy

I am having a really hard time with this hysterectomy thing. I have done about all the research I can and it all points to really needing one. I am BRCA2 Positive. Every Dr. has told me I need one, I was just trying to weasel my way out of it. Well, that is not going to happen and I just to hear it from you ladies whom have had one.

I really need to know what to expect. I need to be settled with this in my mind and heart. I saw my Gyn and cried from the moment she walked in until the she left. I do NOT want to do this. Taking my breasts was easy for me, I knew it was coming. I did not expect them to want to do a hysterectomy too.
Did anyone take any kind of hormone or natural supplement to ease symptoms?
I am on Fareston now, will I feel the same with the hysterectomy too?  I heard that having everything out it like getting hit over the head with a frying pan within 24 hours and what I feel now is "nothing" compared to how I will feel after.

New Post Surgery Gown

April 1 I came out of surgery with 5 drains. Since then I have had 3 more surgeries each requiring drains. I have found myself very frustrated with drain management.

Therefore, my Mom (a BC survivor herself) and I came up with a new product.

Can someone walk me through DIEP

I had a bilat. mast. and DIEP at the same time. It was well worth the 13.5 surgery.

Make sure you look at the Surgery board. It is an 8 week recovery so plan on being down for some time. I am not sure I would have opted to have 2 surgeries. I wanted to get everything done and over with at once.

Neulasta tomorrow for the first time

Bone pain was pretty bad about 2 days after. It lasted for about a week. Tylenol every 4 hours on the nose really helped.

I also had really bad diarrhea. I needed to get a prescription for Lomotil and Cholestamine which helped immensely.

Shopping/packing/to-do list for surgery + recovery....

I have seen one post in here about time. I want to make sure everyone has a time line for needing these items because I was expecting to be up around within 6 weeks. It was honestly 8 weeks before I could move with a little bit of ease. So the shopping ahead and making meals ahead is an excellent idea. Make sure you have about 8 weeks worth of everything.

Also, Mom and I started a new company based on my problems with drain management.

Help with Fareston

I started taking Fareston (I have the genetic mutation that I cannot break down Tamoxifen in my Liver) and I feel terrible!
I thought the hotflashes and moodiness would be my issue but my issues are so much worse than I ever imagined.
I do not sleep. I cannot get to sleep. Once I do, I sleep a few hours and then start with these horrible vivid nightmares. It's almost more like a rest and not true sleep.
I take. 25 of Xanax every night and that is not helping (I've been on Xanax for years).
In addition to the sleep issue, I feel short of breath when I take the Fareston. I have only taken a full pill once and I will never do that again. It was so bad, I thought I was going to pass out. I called my Dr.'s office and all they said was "keep taking it, your side effects will go away". I do not like taking them and in fact, last night I did not take my 1/4 of my pill. I slept like a baby and feel great today!

Has anyone else had problems with Fareston? If so, how did you handle them?
Are there any alternatives to Fareston?

I am due for a hysterectomy/ooph here shortly. They want me on this Fareston for the next 10 years. I can't even get through 10 days! Help!

Help with bills

I finished my chemo treatment about 6 weeks ago. I am just now starting to get the bills in from my treatments and surgeries. So I called Cancer Care and they told me they can only help with co-pays for current care. They kept repeating they could not help me since I was done with my treatment. Well, my treatment facility billed the insurance first and never asked for money up front. Whatever the insurance does not pay, I have to. So I was trying to explain that to her and she just kept "I'm sorry Mam, we cannot help you".

So I called Komen. They gave me two phone numbers to call. Same story. It was for co-pays only.

I am a stay at home mother of a 1 year old, a 2 year old, and a special needs 15 year old. My husband travels 120 miles per day to work so we can eat and have good insurance. We have wonderful insurance thankfully. However they still considered some of the items I had done "experimental". My out of pocket is also more than we can afford.
We are by no means below the poverty line but we are also just squeaking by. We are upside down on our house so we can't take equity out. I would hate to lose our home and everything else because I can't afford to have Cancer.

Anyone know of any help?

Don't wait on getting that Seroma looked at!

Just an FYI.

I think I may have waited a little long to get my seroma looked at. I went to my PS today and they have scheduled a surgery but warned me that it may drain.

Well, I picked up my 1 year old and it sure did. It was like my water broke! There was fluid everywhere. So please do not wait and though we all hate those drains, there is a reason for them.

Taxotere and Cytoxan Side Effects

I just got done with 4 cycles of T/C.

I am still very emotional. It is an emotional thing to go through. Let yourself cry.

My side effects were "Chemo Brain" I can't get words out, can't remember anything, can't get thoughts put together. It slowly goes away but I still cannot remember what happened during the weeks of chemo.

Yes, I was hungry all the time. Reece's seemed to be the one thing I could not get enough of. I ate as much as I wanted and as often as I wanted. Please do not be concerned about your weight right now unless you are losing a lot. That would be something to report to your Dr. for sure. This is the one time they encourage eating :)

I too had the Neulasta and with that came extreme bone pain that lasted about a week each time. Tylenol every 4 hours helped. But I could not lapse at all, I had to take it 4 hours on the nose or the pain would come back.

Diarrhea-especially for those with underlying IBS-D, look out for you IBS-D sufferers! Please make sure you get Lomotil AND Cholestyramine. You will need both, no question! And plan on not going anywhere for that week.

Chemo rashes, yup but tolerable. Just a bit itchy nothing too bad. Totally manageable for me. I had a bad rash when I was pregnant and I fell in love with Gold Bond for itch. Keep it in your purse and around your house. It takes the itch right out. Great stuff!

DIEP: packing for the hospital and after

I totally went commando the whole time in the hospital and at home for most of the time too.

Infection after DIEP & slooow healing

Hang in there. It is a slow process. I had 2 prior C-sections (one 8 months before my DIEP in fact) and I was not told that they may be a source of complications. So I would not worry about that.

My surgery was April 1 and I am still healing in places.

Be patient, it will all be happy again soon :)

arms fall asleep at night

Yup happened to me too.

I found propping my arms up on small buckehweat travel pillows makes them not fall asleep.

How can I make my wife more comfortable?

I had a recliner and wished for a hospital bed. That may make a difference if she is able to move herself to a more comfortable position via the bed. The recliners were too ridgid for me.

Also, Percoset would have never done it for me. I came home with Diluadid and Morphine. You may want to ask for something stronger than Percoset? Just a thought.

Ice packs, wet wash clothes, ice chips, head rubs, foot rubs, pillows, and just being there to empathize/sympathize. I would have done anything just to have someone sit with me.

Bless your heart!

Anyone have IBS-D and doing chemo or have done chemo?

Thanks Lorena.

All I can say, is out of all the side effects of the chemo and Neulasta, the IBS-D has been the most painful and out of control. I am heading to the Dr. today to get some new meds because I haven't left my room in a week because of it.

Someone needs to come out with some info for us IBS people and the effects chemo and/or Neulasta have on it because oh my gosh, ouch.

Anyone have IBS-D and doing chemo or have done chemo?

I know this is an embarrassing subject but I am suffering terribly. My IBS-D was totally controlled until my first chemo and for the last week I can't leave my bedroom.

I am at my wits end.

A PM would be great if you don't want to discuss this out in the open :)

Thanks!

Shopping/packing/to-do list for surgery + recovery....

OK adding something else.

I have too much to say!

I found Plus Size cotton over the head sports bras. They are heavenly!

http://www.sandiegofit.com/plus_sport_bras_2.htm

I got the One Step Ahead in a 5X and I am in love.

Also, those zipper bras look like a good idea but OUCH! The bottom of the zipper rubs terrible on the skin. It is hard and plastic and in just a few short hours I had this horrible painful area that had to heal for a few days.

So if and when you can get something over your head, I highly recommend that One Step Ahead cotton sports bra. They come in up to 6x! YAHOO!

DIEP Problems

Even with the hardness on one side, I would do it again. I did not choose the other surgeries because I never wanted to think about my breasts again. With implants, it takes the expanders, then the replacement and the chance they may have to replaced later in life. I just wanted to get it done and over with.

I would still recommend it to anyone. Just make sure you read the Surgery Board for things to get beforehand. It will make life so much easier!
