Starting chemo in April

Hi everyone, just got home from tx#2.  Went very well.  Picked my granddaughter up and went to dinner at my Uncles Restaurant had a great pan seared tilapia dish served on a bed of greens and beans then came home.  Feeling a little groggy now.  Surprised because 1st tx steroids kept me up for 2 days.  They didn't give me any in my pre chemo bag this time though, just pill form last night and this morning.

Angie sorry to here you're having such a bad time.  My 1st tx I was constipated for 5 days, I finally took some Senna+ which the pharmacist said was the best and on day 6 I ended up on the toilet for 20mins.  It's been free flowing since.  ER doc prescribed Mirilax after I finished antibiotic he put me on but I haven't needed it yet.  He also said to wait 2hrs after I take my Zantac and Prilosec to take the Mirilax or it wouldn't work.  Hang in there it will get better and before you know it you'll be spending lots of time in the bathroom.

Happy Birthday today jas and Happy Birthday weekend NancyD.

Otter glad to hear you're feeling good.  You and I are on the same tx of T/C. but you're 2 days ahead of me.  I think I'm pretty prepared this time.

KristyAnn glad to hear you're day went ok except for the long day.

Thai and RNKaren hope everything went well for you today.

Kalyla thinking about you....hope you're doing ok.

hugs and prayers to everyone.

rest up and enjoy the weekend.

Kalyla sorry to hear you're having these problems.  Keep up the positive attitude.

Today is tx 2 for me at 1pm EST.  Feeling great.  Slept better this time even with steroids.  Loving my wig more and more each day.

Good luck to the rest of you going for tx today.

Love, hugs and prayers to everyone.

sueper13, lewing and tiff2008 good luck with tx #1

Tigwin and SQK with tx#2 and Lauren with tx #3.

You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers today, hang in there and we'll get through this together.  We've got a great support system here.  I want to thank everyone for their support too because my Gram and my Aunt don't like to talk about it so it's nice to come home after a long day at work and have friends to talk to and hear from that are sharing the same experience.  Although yesterday when I got ready to leave for work I asked my gram if I looked ok and she said, "honey you always look nice", that meant more to me than she will ever know.  Everytime I thought about it yesterday it warmed my heart.  I know they love me and care very much but I'm the first one in our family and we have a very large family, 5 generations in fact, that has had to go through this so this is all new to them too.

well better get moving or I'm going to be late to work.  At least I don't have to worry about washing my hair and blow drying and styling, just throw my scarf on and go.  Sometimes this hair loss thing isn't so bad...lol.  Love you all and hope it's a good day for everyone.

Hugs and prayers,

Cindy

Starting chemo in April

Lee and Lauren I have a 5 minute drive from work to cancer center and then 10-15 mins. home depending on traffic.  I live in Upstate NY so it's funny to hear someone say commuter rail and subway...I've never been to NYC but someday I'll get there.  If I don't feel like I can drive my son is 5 mins. away so I'll call him and my daughter-in-law will bring him over and get me and my car and take me home.

Lee when I get really bad headaches, usually behind my eyes and at the nape of my neck, I lay down in a dark room and alternate an icepack back and forth from my eyes to the nape of my neck about 20 mins. on each.  I don't remember where I got the idea from but one day I tried it and I've been doing it for years and it works.  I'm thinking it numbs everything so the tension goes away.  Give it a try and let me know if it helps.

Speaking of driving.....I was planning on driving myself to my tx friday.  My son took me the first time because we weren't sure what to expect and I was fine afterwards.  For those who have had you're second tx any reason I shouldn't drive myself Friday.  I do decadron the night before and morning of, then again in my iv then t/c.  Last time I was so wired from the decadron I could have driven for hours....lol.  I'm assuming I should be ok to drive?

Starting chemo in April

Hi girls,

Lauren I was thinking of doing the same thing....the no no with the razor.  I shaved my head on Sunday and have found wearing the scarves much more comfortable than wearing the wig but by the end of the day even with the scarves I can't wait to take them off and give my head a breather.

RNKaren, I have been slowly losing my eyebrows and started wearing fake eyelashes when I shaved my head.  I have very large eyes and very thin eyelashes so I want to accentuate the positive as they say and draw peoples eyes away from the wig.

I'm tired tonight, between my 2 jobs I've put in 33hrs. in 3 days and got another 10hr. day tomorrow then only half day friday, but I need to get the hours in while I'm feeling good.  Tx #2 at 1pm right after work on friday.

Hope everyone is doing well today that had treatments this week.

Good luck to those of you tomorrow.

Everyone's in my thoughts and prayers as always.

Lots of hugs, Cindy

Good morning leesa, sorry to hear you have to go through this whole thing again, but you made it through once and you can do it again.  If you've read back you'll see that this is a very caring and supportive and with otter a very knowledgeable group.  We'll help you through.

Tomatojuice sorry to hear you had such a difficult time with the port, I will be thinking of you today along with everyone else.

Anyone heard from swimangel72 whether she's going to be able to get her tx today?

As alway's I'll be thinking of everyone and saying a prayer for all of us.  I go Friday 4/25 and can't wait to get another one done and over with.  I think I'm more prepared for the s/e this time.

btw...my first day at work with my wig and the patients are commenting on my new hairstyle and how cute it is.  Most of them don't even realize it's a wig...and this one only costs me $44 form Paula Young catalog.  My neck and shoulder's are stiff because I'm afraid to move my head because I'm worried it's going to move or something but it hasn't and I have the added advantage that I work for a chiroprator so he just gave me an adjustment and told me to, "loosen up it looks great and it's not going to go anywhere"....

Starting chemo in April

Hi girls,

Well I did it, it's completely gone.  All of a sudden on friday night it started coming out in clumps and by this morning after I took a shower it was so thin and short I decided it was time.  It wasn't bad at all.  I kept telling everyone else who was more upset than me and kept trying to convince me not to shave it yet that the way I look at it is this is one more step in this whole process and once it's shaved it's one more step behind me.  I didn't shed 1 tear and the wig I picked out everyone loves.  I like the style but the feeling is weird.  My head was tingling all the way home and I'm afraid to move my head because I'm afraid the wigs going to move.  I couldn't wait to get home and get it off and put my soft nightcap on.  Once I got home and was in my room by myself and really took a good look in the mirror it hit me that this is the way I'm going to look for months.  Very, very mixed emotions right now so I'm going to go get lost in a good paperback book.  Fiction of course because reality is more than I want to think about right now.  Physically I'm feeling great, emotionally not so good.  Next tx friday and I can't wait.  One more under my belt.

Love and prayers to everyone,

Cindy

Starting chemo in April

Well it happened.  For the last 3 or 4 days I've been running my hand through my hair and nothings coming out, then wham all of a sudden last night I did it and a whole handful so I kept trying and it kept coming out, mostly from underneath so it just looks like I got a trim and had it thinned out, but man it was just weird how quickly it happened and how easily it came out and the amount that came out, then it stopped.  My granddaughter and I went down to the lake this morning to watch the sunrise for the first time this year it was absolutely gorgeous and I kept running my hands through my hair as we walked down the pier and hardly nothing was coming out, then this afternoon it started again.  I had already had plans to get it shaved once it started but now it's reality and I'm scared to death and very depressed.  My girlfriend is going to do it for me tomorrow.  I have 2 wigs and a few scarves but I'm sending one wig back because I don't like it and I really like the scarves better and would rather spend my money on a few more of those to accessorize with my workcloths.  People keep telling me I should wait but a part of me is afraid to touch my hair and the other part wants to tug on it to see if more is going to come out.  Physically I'm feeling much better but emotionally drained and tired tonight.  I was hoping to get a full week of work in next week before tx 2 on 4/25.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Love and prayers to everyone,

Cindy

Sue because my 1st chemo treatment was at the beginning of April I went to the March chemo women and read all of their experiences with s/e and suggestions and that helped me a lot when it came time to chemo shop and you'll find as you go along which things work for you specifically and which don't and what will taste good and what won't.  Probably one of the most important things is drink, drink, drink and drink somemore even if you think you can't....(and I'm not talking wine...lol).  I went to my dentist for a checkup before my chemo started and he suggested Biotene mouthwash and toothpaste to prevent mouth sores.  It's very mild and I've had no problems with mouth sores.  My chemo nurse also emphasized alcohol free mouthwash....I bought a lot of Gatorade but don't like it so I pretty much just drink water.

Hi Sue,

First of all don't every apologize for whining.  You're not alone, I know I've done it more than once.  After all that's part of what this whole site is about.  Supporting each other on good days and bad days and if you don't let us know you're having a bad day we can't be there for you.  I think everyone else will agree with me.  Although we don't know each other personally we're all in this together.  Hang in there honey.  You'll find you'll be able to talk to all of us about things you don't feel comfortable talking to family and friends about and that we understand so don't hesitate to ask questions and whine when you need to.  When you're having a good day you'll find yourself encouraging someone who's having a bad one.  And you will have good days too.{{{{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}}

Oh and a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who have been supportive and sharing with me.  I can't tell you how much this site means to me.  It's so nice to have people understand what you're feeling because they are going through the same thing and it's hard for family and friends who aren't to understand sometimes.

Love again,

Cindy

OMG Otter it's like you're reading my mind.  I keep saying I'm going to do the whole shave my head as soon as I see any signs of hair loss but now that I had a few strays this morning I'm thinking not.  I want to keep my hair as long as possible.  I was going to get it cut short before just to make a gradual adjustment but I like my hair style which fairly new for me only about 5 months, just below chin length in front a little shorter in back and side part with long bangs.  Unfortunately I was blessed with my father's receeding hair line so this style doesn't allow that to show so much.  And then there's the whole vein thing.  When I went to emergency Tues. night I told the nurse to be gentle I need my veins to hold up for my next 3 chemo treatments.  The stories I'm hearing about the port scare me and I don't want more to care for or take meds for than I am now.  I feel for those of you who have to go through that.  When I went for my 10 day check-up with the onc. I set up my next appt. for tx#2 which is the day after yours and my first thought was, do we have to wait can't we just do it this Friday and get it done with?  Fortunately my counts were good and my sore throat and fever symptoms are much much better so it isn't going to effect next tx.  Going to stay with my daughter and grand daughter tonight for a girls night pajama party thing just the 3 of us.  I can't emphasize enough....thank god for kids and grandkids.  Keeping everyone in my prayers we'll get through this.

Glad to hear you're feeling better Lauren.  My grand daughter who is 8 told everyone in group at school that I was going to be bald too.  She can't wait to see how funny I'm going to look but she doesn't want strangers to see me bald.  Kids are the best medicine for any ailment!!!!!!

bcs75, I am 14 days out from 1st tx and I've been doing the same thing for the last 3 or 4 days, running my hands through my hair.  Like you I'm almost wishing it would just start so I can deal with it and get on with other things.  My onc said it would start falling out week 3.  It doesn't seem to be doing anything yet although I have noticed my eyebrows are thinning already.

kalyla glad to hear you're doing better.

I'm at work after being out since Tues.  Feels good to be back and feeling human again.

Good morning girls,

Feeling better so I'm going to push myself to go to work....not only have I been out all week and gotten lazy, the weather is suppose to be in the 70's again today and being from Upstate NY that's a luxury right now...Cool

Lauren sorry to hear that you're not feeling well, my doctor has me on both Prilosec and Zantac, they pumped my stomach in the hospital but there was no blood then they also gave me an IV of something that blocks the acids in the stomach so I'm feeling much better but chemo onc said it was because of my previous history of gastro problems that it got so bad and sore throat was viral and not from chemo.  I also feel for you, although my kids are grown now, I remember very well what it's like to raise a child alone especially when you feel crappy.  I also remember how good the unconditional love they have for you feels and how great they're hugs are.Smile  When I was feeling so crappy the other night, all I wanted was a hug from my daughter and granddaughter so that's where I went and it helped a lot.  Hang in there and know that I'm thinking of you and everyone else.

Cindy
