Nipple question

I rank right up there with fuddy duddy (well at least in clothes--according to my 16 year old :-).  Anyway--I'm 2 weeks out from my nipple reconstruction--and loving the loose t-shirt look.  I do think the braless thing is really overrated...but the appearance in the mirror is great!  I too was nipple shy...but changed my mind the week before.  No regrets and am very glad I did!  Erin

Effect of reconstruction with Implant for practice of yoga

Hi Ally--I would say about 6 months...but I did have an expander removed due to infection after 5 weeks...so that kinda delayed things a little for me.

extra skin under arm

I'm sure your PS can fix that with a little "nip & tuck".  I had a pocket of fat and a little lipo did the trick.  Erin

need advice on how to help

Hi there--it's a very difficult time that your family is facing.  I have a sister who is 16 months younger than me.  At the time of my surgery--she was a godsend...not for what she said but what she did for me.  She would lie in bed with me and watch movies and lightly rub my arms.  We would tell family stories & laugh. She would also rub lotion on my feet and hands while we watched the cooking channel.  Sure I would cry...but I really needed her most for comfort and she was there.  She also knew I was concerned about being able to hide my drains yet feel feminine--after a week or so--I really wanted out of my jammies and robe.  Without mention she spent several hours prerusing sale racks finding me a couple of smock style shirts and blouses.  They were great and made me feel like a million bucks!  Hug her often--Erin

Nipple question

Ok--I couldn't help but smile and giggle to myself as I read your message.  We have very similiar situations...BC on left side, right was prophy--both lat dorsi with implants. 2 weeks ago I had my nipples recontructed but it wasn't without lots of careful thought which kinda went like this....not interested in any more surgery but wanting the finishing touches cosmetically yet concerned about erect nipples 24/7.  After lots of discussions with my hubby--I went with my original plan and had them done and am very glad I did.  I know that I'll likely have to wear bra's with concealers...but that's ok.  My best advice....don't worry about who thinks what (I'm sure some days my PS thinks I just fell off an apple cart :-)---at this point do what makes you feel best about you!  Good luck--Erin

Why is it so hard to lie down flat with expanders?

Typcally, expanders and tummy sleepers don't mix well (it always felt like trying to sleep on top of bocci balls :-).  My PT worked with me to get me flat and it really added to my comfort and ability to sleep through the night.  After my exchange--I slowly began to roll onto my side and then to my tummy again---it was heaven (kinda like that first hot shower after surgery :-).  You'll get there--but with everything else that BC affects--it will take time.  Erin

Effect of reconstruction with Implant for practice of yoga

Hi there--I would not consider myself a serious yoga student--but have participated in classes (1-2 a week) over the years.  I had a lat dorsi bilateral mast. 14 months ago.  I've returned to the gym and have not experienced any limitations or problems.  Rather--yoga and other stretching classes have really helped with my recovery.  Good luck!  Erin

Expanders and working

Hi there--alot of it depends on your job and the work/physical activity required.  I worked throughout...but I have a "desk job".  I did find myself doing a lot of walking around--it really helped with "comfort management".  I would double-check with your PS to make sure.  Good luck!  Erin

Expanders vs. Implants looks....

Hi Suave--I hesitate to say these words...but hang in there.  It typically takes some time for the implants to fall into place and fill out.  I remember in May when I had my exchange--I had such high expectations.  But unfortunately found myself crying for a good part of a week.  I was so terriby disappointed with how my implants looked.  Today--they resemble nothing like they did in May--their full & perky.  Give yourself a few months and if you're still disappointed...talk to your PS about what can be done.  At this point--you deserve to be 100% satisfied.  Take care--Erin

Expanders: OUCH!!!

Hi there--I was one of those women who had 150 ccs at time of placement and 100ccs every couple of weeks.  I wish I would have found this site before I then--I would have done things differently.  I was very uncomfortable and started seeing a PT and taking Robaxin (muscle relaxer) regularly.  I think Rubytuesday once said....slow and easy wins the race :-)  If you aren't comfortable soon--I would ask the PT to possibly consider removing some of you'r initial ccs.  Then give yourself lots of time to stretch in between fills.  Good luck!  Erin

Expander pain and Meditation

Hi Daisy--I too highly recommend PT.  I started seeing mine about 3 months after my expanders and noticed a huge difference in how I felt and my level of discomfort.  Have never tried meditation (seem to always be running around with kids, dog, husband, etc.)--glad to hear its working for you.  Erin

How long to wait before exchange?

Hi Kristi--congrats on getting closer to the "finish" line.  My PS waits a min. of 6 weeks after the last fill.  It's important that your muscle and skin have expanded to allow for palcement of the implant.  Good luck!  Erin

Constant Discomfort with Implants

Hi Paula--I've had mine since May and still get periodic discomfort and tightness (iron bra feeling)--although not constant.  I too work out, eat right, drink lots of fluids, and stretch every chance I get.  I find that I have to wear bras and sports bras at night.  I spoke with my PS yesterday and he says sometimes it can take up to a year for things to settle down.  I've been seeing my PT every 2 weeks--which helps as well.  On really bad days--which are not often (but do seem to occur when I'm stressed at work)--I will take a muscle relaxer (Robaxin)--it helps my frame of mind as well :-).  I hesitate to say hang in there (since I want to scream every time I hear those words)....hope things get better quickly for you.  Erin

Pain weeks after exchange

Definitely check with your PS...but I started walking the wall, snow angels (without the snow), some basic yoga stretches, and light weights (3 lbs)---arm curls, overhead, pec flexes, etc.  I did have a bilateral.  The loose t-shirts are are intended to protect the new nipples--they're Ok--I top them with a button up sweater. The goal is to try to protect the new nipples from being smashed or pressed during the first 4-6 weeks--some have even mentioned longer.  There are some tricks I've heard about....like stick-em concealers for the natural nip. Some of the ladies have also suggested cosmetic sponges--cut with a donut hole and lightly tapped over the nip to protect is from being smashed down or even bunion pads.  I vacillated about having my nipples reconstructed--not wanting to face another surgery--but I'm really glad I did it.  It's made a positive difference for me.  Next stop....areola tattoos in the spring.  Hope this helps--feel free to PM me anytime....Erin

Pain weeks after exchange

Hi there--I've had some similiar reactions...on my left side (SNB--BC side).  It's not painful but uncomfortable muscle spasms.  I've been seeing my PT every couple of weeks and it seems to help--along with lots of stretching.  I too wear a sports bra to bed--which seems to work as well.  I had my nipples reconstructed last week and can't wear anything for at least 2 weeks--except loose t-shirts (I told my PS today--that the going braless issue--was definitely overrated :-).  Anyway--it still spasms...but its not not constant.  My PS says it sometimes takes 4-6 months for things to settle down.  Hope this helps...  Erin

VS changes the IPEX

I love the Bali concealer wireless. It has a molded cup and the concealer hides nips and beyond.

Latissumus Dorsi -- what was your experience?

Hi there--had my bM LD last Setptember. Just had my nipples done 5 days ago....huge positive difference in 13 months!

1.How long were you in the hospital?  4 days

2. How long was your initial recovery (when you felt good enough to turn over in bed, abandon the prescription pain killers, etc.)? 2 weeks

3. Did you get your final implant at the same time? no...did have an infection in left side...implants were done in May

4. Did you have drains after this procedure? Oh yes--4 for about 4 weeks

5. If you had radiation, how soon afterward did you get the lat flap surgery? no radiation

6. Is the breast scar always that elipitical one that I've seen in some of the pictures? Right now, I just have one straight scar that goes from my underarm to "nipple" area. I sure would like to keep it to one scar if that's do-able.  My PS did a circular incision around the areola...once I'm tattooed...no visible scars.  I do understand that many PS prefer to use the same incision.

Good luck!  Erin

How large do tops need to be to accommodate drains?

You'll find that many of us have used all kinds of tricks to hide the little buggers.  I tied a shoe lace around my waist and safety pinned my drains to it.  I only did this after I pinned them to my shirt and accidently took my shirt off and forgot they were pinned.  Very close call :-).  It was also great when I had to shower...the shoe lace dries in about 30 minutes.  Good luck!  Erin

hospital bed at home helpful?

I too used lots of pillows and my husbands' favorite recliner for a few days.  You'll probably be more comfortable in your own bed in your own room with lots of pillows.  But by all means if you think you'll be more comfortable in the hosp bed--use it.  Best wishes....Erin
