Jobst Surgical Vest with Cups--I am not pleasedThanks for the bump. Wow! you gals have really done your homework! Right now I am wearing a Bestform low impact cotton/spandex sports bra. They are available at our Fort Worth Wal-mart for $6.97, I have a website so you can look at one, but it is not the wal-mart site so price is a little different. http://www.cottonbras.com/bb6014.html I really like this bra because it does not feel hot or sweaty, it has wide straps and front closures. I don't know if this is what I need to be wearing, I will talk with my LE therapist about what is best for me. On a different note, I don't fully understand the swell spots. I have what my PS is calling fat necrosis around the outside boarder of my new foob (immediate DIEP recon, stage 1 two months ago). The tissue is very hard and fluid accumulates around it, esp in the evenings at the end of the day. It is very painful and sometimes has pitting edema. The area is about 6in in length (moving around the outside edge of the breast) and about 3in wide. Does anyone think the swell spots would help? Could this be lymphedema?I went to the lymphedema treatment center today. The therapist I saw was wonderful and very thorough. She agrees that I have swelling, but mostly in my chest around my new foob. She measured my arms in seven different places (the other person I saw only measured my arms in one place) and told me one measurement was 0.5cm larger than the other arm, but all of the other measurements were equal. At this time she recommended a compression bra and she is teaching me to do manual lymph massage along with some stretching exercises. I know I will need to be careful and diligent about the swelling I do have, but I am much less apprehensive about everything now. Andrea PS: does anyone know anything about the ballise bra or the jobst? (sp?) Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/4 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Nurses with Breast CancerThis is such a wonderful thread! When I was diagnosed, I didn't know much about breast cancer (thank goodness kids don't get breast cancer!). The doctor that gave me my diagnosis was wonderful. She sat down with me for about an hour and explained the differences in the types of breast cancer, I was very fortunate to have her. Later in my journey I found the opposite where I guess some people assumed I could understand what they had to say and were afraid of maybe talking down to me. It took me forever to get all of the information I needed from my genetics concelor and to understand it all! I think as nurses we can help our healthcare providers by encouraging them to talk to all patients in a manor that is easily understood. Could this be lymphedema? Thanks for the information. I did not know about the glove, which I will now make sure and ask about. The physical therapy center I went to is not very close to where I live (which was ok when I was to go for just a few visits to learn some range of motion excercises) so my doctor has referred me to a local hospital that has a lymphedema treatment center. I will have my first appt there next week for evaluation and treatment. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks again for the information. I am very apprehensive about a long term complication and it helps so very much to hear from others. I don't feel so alone! DIEP vs MS Free TRAMHi everyone, I thought I'd add my experience to the mix and hope it will help. I went in for DIEP but ended up with DIEP on one side and MS free TRAM on the other (perpetrators were too small on one side) I can honestly say there seems to be no difference in my foobs or in healing from one side to the other. The only thing I can think of that is different is my new belly button is slightly to the left from center. When I asked my PS about this he told the area where he took the muscle probably pulled the new belly button to the left slightly (it is very slight) as I was healing, he will be able to fix this during stage two. If this is the only thing I can come up with, I feel I can say there is really no difference in either procedure to me! Could this be lymphedema?Hi everyone, I am having trouble trying to figure out if I really have lymphedema or post surgical swelling, and of course the best course of treatment. I had bilt. mast, SNB and Stage one for DIEP reconstruction two months ago. I had one node removed on my left side and three on my right side. I now have a moderate to large amt of swelling and pain from under my arm, up to my clavicle, and over to the center of my chest on my left side and mild swelling on my Rt. side around my new breast. I still have some limitations in my range of motion so my PS sent me to a physical therapist. The physical therapy center specializes in upper extremity limitations and lymphedema. After I was assessed by a PT, she told me I had lymphedema starting in my left arm since it measured one centimeter larger than my right arm. She wants to fit me for a compression garment at my next visit which she feels will need to be worn for at least the next six months and start treatment for lymphedema. Now the question: Is it too soon to diagnoses lymphedema, esp if only one node was removed on that side? Any insight into all of this would be very helpful. Nurses with Breast CancerHi everyone, I am a nurse as well. Started nursing in 1987, worked NICU for most of my career, did some pedi ER and now work part time at a large pediactric hospital as a telephone triage nurse. I just went back to work last week after taking two months off. The hospital has been great! I think it does help to have co-workers who can understand all the medical things we are going through. Thanks for starting this thread! The connection to other nurses is great! Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Smaller than wanted after 1st Stage DIEP, what can be done?Jaanee, It's all a little confussing. My PS says I did have DIEP, but technically, I had DIEP on one side and on the other, he had to take a small sliver of muscle for added circulation since my perferators were not as big on that side, so that makes the other side a free TRAM flap. So far I am just wearing a low-impact front closure sports bra, I guess I will see what else is avalible if I end up being two different sizes! Smaller than wanted after 1st Stage DIEP, what can be done?Hi everyone, I had bilateral mast with immediate DIEP on 7/9/08. Prior to mast I was a size 40B and discussed with my PS that I would like to be a C cup after reconstruction since size 40B bras are so hard to find in the stores without special ordering them. Most store's inventory start with 40C and go up from there. It has now been 2 months since my Stage 1 surgery and I feel I am still a B cup, in fact I have a large area of fat necrosis on my left side that will have to be removed during Stage 2 making me even smaller. My PS mentioned fat transfers from my flank area or using small implants. I really don't want to go through anymore major cutting (I'm still trying to heal from the first one!) and I chose DIEP because I did not want implants. Has anyone else had this dilemma, and if so what did you decide to do about it? Thanks, Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Official Belly Button PollYou can add mine to the list! I had DIEP on the Rt and free TRAM on the left. My bb is about 1/2 an inch to the left. My PC said this is because of the free TRAM he had to do on that side and that he will TRY to fix it during stage 2. We'll see how things turn out. July 08 ReconstructionsHi D, The first time I met my PS and he was discussing all of my options, he did mention fat transfers if he needed more fat to build the breast, (he also said he could use a small implant if he did not have enough fat). He has not mentioned anything like that since, but I too wonder what size I will end up if this hard area does not soften and has to be removed. I was a B to C cup and asked him for a solid C cup. Right now I don't feel like I am any bigger than I was before the mast. and what if he take all this out? yikes!. I feel like a have been in pain so long that I am way past my tolerance for pain and fat transfers sound painful! Please let me know how thinks go with you, I'll be praying for us! Incision splitting? Thanks for the support and information! I can now say my incision is healing well, it tried it's best to open up, but thank goodness it was not sucessful! Now it is just a wider area of red than the rest of the incision, but is completely closed and looks healthy. Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

How long do drains stay in?I had bilat mast/SNB with DIEP July 9th. I had six drains and the last one was removed when I was six weeks out. My PS is pretty conservative, he wanted to see the drain producing less than 20cc for 3 days in a row before he would remove it. I know the drains are a real pain, but I was glad to have it doing it's job instead of me having to deal with the consequences! July 08 ReconstructionsHi everyone, I had bilat. mast/SNB with DIEP July 9th. The outside edge (about half of my new breast) is very hard and painful. My PS said this is fat necrosis and with massage it should break up, but if it has not all resolved, he will try to break it up and remove it with liposuction during stage 2. I am wondering is anyone else has any of these problems? The whole area is tight and swollen and when I massage it, it is very firm with pitting edema, very sensitive and painful (even though there is also a lot of numbness, if that makes sense!) There is no redness, no fever and the incision line looks great. I have not had any complications with healing or infection. If anyone has any insight or information, I would be very appreciative! Incision splitting?I had bilat. DIEP 4 weeks ago and now have an area on my abd incision that looks like it is trying to open. My PS was also not concerned at all, but it is really freaking me out! My sister had DIEP last summer and had multiple areas open on her abd. that took a wound vac and 6 months to heal, I do not want to go there! Anyone have suggestions on what to do and not do to help? My area seems to be growing in length, but not depth, it in now about 2 in long. Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Breast Reconstruction ComplicationsHi all, My sister had bilat mast with DIEP July 2007. She developed complications healing and her abdominal incision openned in three places, one wound was at least six inches across and very deep. After many weeks of packing, draining, abx etc, she finally found out about a wound vac and self refered to a wound clinic. She had the wound vac for three weeks (not all that long I've been told) and did finally heal enough to be surgically closed after six months of dealing with all this. I had the same bilat mast and DIEP this July (different PS) and so far so good, but I am wondering when you can consider yourself in the clear as far as not developing an open wound? Anyone know? Surgery in JulyHi everyone, I'm 2 1/2 weeks post-op now (bilt mast, SNB, DIEP). My spirits are up, but my body feels so run down! I am still very achy and sore. My path report was all clear so now all thats left is to heal! I am lifted up by everyone's progress, there are such amazing women on this site Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

DIEP: packing for the hospital and afterI do agree with everyone, I started my cycle (I guess from the stress of the long surgery) so I wanted some panties to hold a pad in place. I finally gave up and found the pad stayed in place just fine without the bother of panties! I now put them on when I go out of the house, but it is much easier to go al natural when possible. Will be sending good vibes your way for Wed. Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

2 Post-DIEP questionsHi Jaanee, I was told to "take it easy" and no pulling or straining, no heavy lifting and to keep my arms at my sides, but no difinitions or boundries were ever explained! I'm so sorry to hear about your flap, what a disappointment. My drains are also stiched, but one fell out in the hospital and one fell out at home. I don't know how they came out, I just found them out. I did not feel the stitch break or pull, I don't know if the stitch unraveled or broke. I do think that since the drains that came out were the ones in my breasts and they were still activly draining, that is probably the reason I am so uncomfortable with swelling around my chest and arms. I will see the PS on Tues and see what (if anything) can be done. I like your idea with the pillows, I will give it a try. My arms are also very sore, I did not think about the immobility from surgery, but it explains alot. Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

DIEP: packing for the hospital and afterHi there! I wondered about the underwear question myself. I had bilat mas with DIEP 7/9/08. I had a little belly before surg so afterwards, my underwear was a little big ( I like the french cut briefs, high on the thighs and the waistband is close to the belly button) I find that letting the abd drain tubing hang through the leg openings and bring the waistband over the incision is the most comfortable for me. (hope not too much information!). I also packed a box of flushable wipes to keep by the potty in the hospital and they were the most helpful item I can recommend, and don't forget carmex/blistex! As far as the mesh panties, I used them when I had my C-sec and had no complaints. The hospital gave me a pair this time and they were very uncomfortable. I 'don't know what the difference was, different surgery or different panties, I'm not sure! Hope this helps you! Andrea Andrea Dx 4/23/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |
