dcis non invasive then why worry?

DCIS is non-invasive. But, that does not mean that it can't or won't become invasive. Especially if it is high-grade DCIS. I have read several posts of women who were originally diagnosed with DCIS and thought they were in the clear to have it return and also metastasize. That's why the cure rate is not 100% but in the 90's.  Don't know about you but I'm not much of a gambler.

Found lump, only 19...

Aly006 -- My daughter is your age and found a lump when she was 17. It sounds a lot like the way you described yours. She went through the whole thing. The doctor sent her for an ultrasound and they decided it was not a cyst -- so she had a biopsy and it turned out to be a fiboadenoma -- benign growth. Anyway -- you would have to be examined and yes they feel it first. You would be in a gown and the doctor would only open your gown enough to check you out. If you are really paranoid about it a women doctor would  probably make you feel more comfortable. My daughter was sent to a women's health center where they did all the testing. They were all women and treated her like she was their own daughter. She was a little embarrassed but got over it when she realized how great everyone was. It is very unlikely you have cancer, but you should be checked out. I was diagnosed myself with cancer this past year and I used to be very self conscious about my breasts. But heck, after going through everything I've gone through in the last year I'm not any more. I've even been known to flash people(well just my husband really -- but he loves it). Anyway -- you can handle it!!!!

too those with or had nipple discharge

I had a single spot of blood show up on my bra from my right breast in Jan 08. Thought it was a scratch. Found another drop a week or so later. I realized there was nothing there to cause it so I gave my nipple a squeeze and sure enough, there was clear liquid with a little blood in it. I followed up with my doctor who sent me for ultrasound. Nothing really showed up so I was sent to a breast specialist. She did another ultrasound and also sent me to get a breast mri. I ended up having high grade dcis from 8:00 to 12:00 in my breast. My left breast was clear. Since then I have had a mastectomy and am going through reconstruction. Mammogram and ultrasound do not always catch it early, especially if you have dense breasts.

DCIS - cancer or Pre-cancer?

This whole thing about DCIS not  being cancer is bull. Sorry but it ticks me off. Yes, it is cancer, just not invasive yet. The next time a Dr tells one of us it is not cancer, I would suggest to them to have some of our  'non-cancer cells' injected into his/her breast tissue to see what happens. I'm sure they wouldn't be willing to try that experiment.  Hmmmm, I wonder????

DCIS with positive nodes?

Sounds a lot like my diagnosis. I had high nuclear-grade DCIS with comedo-necrosis. My DCIS was from 8:00 to 12:00 o'clock, so I had to have a mastectomy. Even with the large amount of DCIS I was still 0/10 node involvement. Let's hope your mother is the same. I will keep her in my prayers.

anyone have trouble going back to wearing a bra?

I 'm prettty sure the no underwires is because of capsular contracture issues with the implants. Once you're healed and cleared by your PS you can probably go back to them, but don't know for sure. Most women wear the wrong bra size anyway and the wire rides against the breast tissue and not the chest wall where it is supposed to.

Anyone had recon and reduction together?

I had a reduction on my left side and replaced a tissue expander with a silicone implant on my right side on August 8th. The surgery was pretty easy and pain was not bad at all. Compared to the mastectomy and  the tissue expander placement, it was a piece of cake. With everything else you've been through, I bet you will find it's pretty easy too.

First fill questions!

My fills were 50cc's each. The only pain I ever experienced was a mild ache in shoulder blade after my first fill. I did have a feeling of extra fullness after all the fills, but no pain. I went weekly for 2 months and am now waiting for my exchange surgery which is scheduled for August 8.  Something else to consider is the larger fills can cause stretch marks. I wasn't really concerned about that, but I know some people are. I was however, paranoid about my first fill because of my stitches, but found out for me anyway it was quite easy.

Immediate Reconstruction

To Frustrated2: Since you are having a mastectomy if your margins and nodes are clear you probably dont need any follow up.

symptoms of breast cancer

I'm new at this site too. Found it last week when looking for some info. I haven't posted very much but have done a  whole lot of reading of other posts. All I can say about this site is WOW!!!

Yes you should be concerned -- but not panicked.

If you are having bleeding get to the doctor. That's how my DCIS was discovered. One tiny drop of blood on my bra. My doc sent me to the breast center and I had an ultrasound. They didn't see anything specific but it was suspicious enough my doc sent me to a breast specialist/surgeon. She then did another ultasound and rather bluntly told me she thought I had DCIS. At first I felt I had been punched in the gut, but she was very reassuring and told me DCIS is one of the earliest forms of breast cancer. She sent me for a breast MRI and scheduled a biopsy the next week. The biopsy confirmed her hunch.

There are other reasons you could have bleeding. So the thing is don't panic, but don't put off following up. Try to take the attitude of dealing with it one step at a time.

Guilty for "just DCIS?"

I had to laugh when I read your post Mumsy. I think you may be my long lost twin. I know exactly what you mean.  I too have not cried. I too feel guilty that I don't have to suffer more through radiation or chemo. On top of it all I have wanted a breast reduction for a long while (36F's) and now I am getting one albeit the hard way. I had another friend who had a lumpectomy and radiation,  tell me it would hit one day and I would either break down and cry or explode in anger at someone over nothing. I haven't done either yet. I'm still waiting. I just found this website a few days ago and can't seem  to tear myself away. I have cried for a lot of others reading their stories. I think that is better than crying for myself anyway. Don't feel guilty though, feel blessed.

signs or symptoms?

I had a tiny drop of blood on my bra. At first I thought I had scratched a bump or something. About 10 days later there was another. I figured  there was only one other place it could have come from so I squeezed my nipple and sure enough there it was. Went to the doc and after an ultrasound  breast mri and biopsy found out I had DCIS (stage 0).  I never would have known until it was invasive if not for that drop of blood. You know what is normal for you. Never hesitate to check it out.

Breast MRI - is it "doable" w/out Ativan or the like

One thing to add to all the other comments: If the arms are above the head, make sure you are in a comfortable position before they start.  The technician asked if I was comfortable before she started and I thought I was, but I was on that nerve that runs down the inside of my arm. By the  time I realized it, she had started and I didn't want to move to mess the test up so I just stayed that way for the 30 minutes.  I must have compressed the nerve because for about 4 weeks after that I would get a zinger if I moved my arm just right. Not really painful but more annoying. The  test itself was a piece of cake.

just beg. pt for post mastect/expanders

I have been experiencing similar jabbing or biting type pain from my expander. Mine is towards the bottom edge where expander is. I have had 5 fills at 50cc's. It is not constant and I have found slow stretching of my chest and arms helps.  After reading a lot of posts, I get the idea no 2 people here are the same. What works for me may not for you.

tissue expander pain

I just joined to see if I could find any other people with tissue expander pain and see what they had to say. Now I feel guilty. I had a 450cc saline expander placed after my mastectomy was complete and my Doc only put 50cc's in it to start. I have been going every week for 50 more cc's. I am up to 300cc's. The little sucker is starting to feel like one of those aliens in the guys body (from the movie) trying  to get out. It feels like it is biting me from the inside.

I guess I shouldn't complain. Sounds like you've had it really rough.

 Ouch!!!!!
