sex after chemoI finished chemo in January. I have had dbl mastectomy and hyterectomy since then, so my husband and I haven't had much sex in the past year. Every time we have tried, I have a lot of pain. (it is not from the hysterectomy) Does the chemo change how everything feels? I also just had a 5 day stay at the hospital for MRSA Staph infection and I was on 3 different IV antibiotics and was sent home on antibiotics for two weeks, so I knpw I don't have an infection. It just hurts, and I hate to go to another DR for anything else right now. I am just ready to feel normal again..:( Anyone else have problems? |

BRCA 1 PositiveI was diagnosed last year with Breast Cancer. My mom had bc twice and ovarian cancer.I had a lumpectomy and chemo then I had the genetic test and I am BRAC1+. I decided to have double mastectomy with reconstruction. That was done April 9, 2008 and I also had a total hysterectomy on July 25th. I feel like I have been through alot but I am glad it is almost over. I still have some plastic surgery left to finish nipple reconstruction and I will wait until early next year for that. I need some time to heal. Let me know if you have any questions. Debbie |

Double MastectomyYuYu, I am 44 and was DX last July with E+ and HER2+ also.HER2 + is more aggressive. So even though I was stage 1, they recommended chemo and herceptin. I first had lumpectomy and chemo/herceptin. Then I had the genetic test done and found out I was BRAC1+. My chances of reoccurance were up tp 87%, so I had the double mastectomy with reconstruction in April. I actually like my breast more now. The lumpectomy made my breast look like it was caved in. I had skin sparing double mastectomy with tram flap. My breasts look great and I am still waiting to have nipple reconstruction. I am not even sure that I want nipples anymore, lol. It is nice not to have to worry about wearing a bra. So, it is not so bad. Debbie |

Mastectomy & reconstruction at the same timeDiane, I had a double mastectomy with the tram flap reconstruction in April. I had a few complications with mine. The left side did not get enough blood supply and two days later I was back in surgery. They did the latisimus dorci flap on the right side to fix it. So, that side had to have an expander put it. The tram flap is very hard on you abdominal muscles. I developed a hernia and needed to have that repaired. I was also told I needed a hysterectomy because I have the BRAC1+ gene. In July, I had the hysterectomy, hernia repair and implants put in all at the same time. I am 4 weeks out and recovering. The lifts are not always what you expect. My PS put implants in both sides to make them match and lifted one side. One implant is too high and the other side needs to be lifted now. He will have to go back and lower the one implant. It is frustrating because I thought everything was going to come out nice with a flat tummy and perky boobs, but it is a long process and you never know how your body will react. I also had an allergic reaction to the surgical glue.... Oh my gosh, that itched like crazy!!! Just be prepared mentally in case something doesn't go right. I had to learn the hard way. I am waiting a few months for the nipple reconstruction. Debbie |

bilateral mastectomy with reconstructionI had double mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction in April and that surgery took 6 hours. Then on July 25th, I had TAH combined with a hernia repair (caused from the tram flap) and implants put in during same surgery. I had to get surgeons to schedule surgery together and that surgery lasted 6 hours also. So, make sure you know how long it will take. Both of my surgeries took about 2 hours longer than they expected. Debbie |

Results of Genetic Test? Decision?Coleen, I was diagnosed last July with Breast Cancer. I had a lumpectomy then started chemo and herceptin in August. My mom had breast cancer twice and ovarian, so I had the genetic test. I found out that I have BRAC1+. After chemo, I decided to have double mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction on April 9th and hysterectomy on July 25 with more reconstruction. I was going to wait on hysterectomy, but I wanted to get it all over. Plus, cost less for me to have it in one year. It was hard to go through all the surgeries, but I am glad it is over. I am still recovering, but doing well. You will need help ...especially the first week after surgery. Debbie |

brca testing and insurance ???I was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and mymom has had breast cancer and ovarian cancer. So, my onc recommended the genetic test. My insurance company (aetna) did cover it because of family history and my cancer at age 43. It turned out I do have the BRAC1 gene. I have had a double mastectomy with reconstruction and a hysterectomy. My chance of a reoccurance with the BRAC1 was 87%, after surgery my chances go down to less than 2%. |

Breast Reconstruction ComplicationsI don't know if this will help, but I was told to take 1000mg/day of vitamin C before my surgery to promote healing. I am still taking it and everything healed nicely. |

Upcoming TRAMI had a double mastectomy with TRAM flap. The pain wasn't bad, but sitting up was hard to do. I slept in a recliner for about 3 days after I left the hospital. My surgery was April 9th and I still sleep with a triangle cushion on my bed just for more comfort. I was not bent over at all. My problem is some bulging in my abdominal muscles. My PS is going to put mesh in to fix that when I have my implant surgery. Ask him to do the mesh during the surgery and then you won't have to have another procedure down the road. I worked from home for 6 weeks and went back part-time. It was 8 weeks before I could sit at my desk for a full day. Good Luck! I hope all goes well. I have the BRAC 1 + gene, so I will be going in for a hysterectomy, implants, and ab repair combo surgery on July 25th, so I will be back to another 4-6 week recovery Debbie |

Recovery is not for babiesMy right flap failed after my tram flap surgery. They told me my body temp had dropped very low during surgery and they had to heat up the room while they operated. They checked me every hour for the first 24 hrs, and then decided that it had failed. They performed a second surgery right away and fixed the failed flap with the lat dorci flap and expander. After that surgery, they kept the bear hug (inflated hot air) on me for 24 hours. I am fine now and going to have surgery again on July 25 for the implant in the right side. |

complication for flap reconstructionI had TRAMP flap reconstruction in April. I had a complication with the right breast after surgery. It was not getting enough blood supply, so I had a second surgery the next day and they did a Latis Dorci flap with expander. My abdominal muscles are bulging some and under my right arm is still very swollen. I will be having a hysterectomy and my implants put in during the same surgery, so my PS can put some mesh in after the hyster to fix the bulging muscles. I would not recommend the tram flap. The tummy tuck is not worth it.... I wish I had come to this site before my surgeries!! |

Saline vs Silicone implants?I am going to have surgery on July 25th to for my implants. The PS sent me a form to sign for Mentor Memory Gel Silicone implants. He has not discussed the difference between Saline and Silicone. Does anyone have any comments on which one is better, safer, etc.? Debbie |

tram flap complications? Thanks everyone. I am new to this site, so I appreciate the advise. I had a doctors appointment today and it went well. He said I won't need an implant on the left side and they would make the right match the left. The ab muscles may need to be tightened up (surgically), but it's too early to know. He said they could do that when they put the implant in and it was not a big deal. So, I will just wait and see how things go. I go back in one month. Thanks! |

tram flap complications?I had a double mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction on April 9th. The right side did not get enough blood supply and I ended up in surgery 48 hours later. They did the right side over with the latissimus dorsi flap and an expander. Now I wonder what the rest of reconstruction will be. They will have to put an implant in the right side now. Should I ask for an implant for the left side? Will they look different if I don't? Has anyone had this complication? My recovery is going pretty good except my abdominal muscles are still swollen and tight. How long does that last? Any advise would be appreciated. DDart |

Triple positive but NODE-NEG! stage II had 1.6 cm, E+, her2+ with nod-neg. My treatment was carboplatin, taxotere and herceptin for 6 cycles and then herceptin every 21 days for a year. I have 3 more herceptin treatments to go. I also had the genetic test done because my mom had breast cancer twice and now ovarian. I have the BRAC1 genetic mutation, so I just had a double mastectomy with tram flap reconstruction 4 weeks ago. The surgery lowers my chances of the cancer reoccurring from 87% to about 2%. The path report from surgery showed no cancer cells! |

TRAM flapI had a double mastectomy with the tram flap surgery on April 9th. The right side was not getting enough blood supply, so 48 hours later they did the latissimus dorsi flap on the right side with an expander. I went home with 6 drains... I am doing pretty good except for my stomach muscles feel so tight and I swell every time I walk around. How long does the abdominal swelling last. My doctors did not tell me to wear a binder. Does it help with swelling? They will have to put an implant on the right side. Will this look different from the left? I am wondering if they should go ahead and do implants on both sides. Can anyone advise me on that? |
