dcis non invasive then why worry?Okay, this is a dumb question, but can you develop mets after a Stage 0 DCIS dx? I had a BM & SNB in April, no microinvasion, clear margins, nodes clear. So, pure DCIS. I've been told my risk for recurrence is less than 2% over my lifetime, not 2% each year (pretty good odds). But each time I have an ache or pain, or headaches I'm scared to death its mets. Do you have to have a recurrence before it can metastasize? How were your scars from expander to implant exchange? My PS made new incisions along the crease underneath my breasts for my xchange. You can't see the xchange scars bc they are hidden & in the fold of my breasts. He did not use the mast. scars bc of increased risk of scar tissue. Anyone else have the same? I assumed less chance of scar tissue is good because maybe scar tissue can be mistaken for lumps along the scar line? Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

For those who "could" have Lumpectomy.... why choose Mast?Bottom line, I had the option, but wanted to reduce my risk of recurrence as much as possible. BM reduced my risk the most. And, just as important, I considered my quality of life. Didn't want to be looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life, waiting & wondering if/when BC would come back. Now, I have a 2 % chance over my lifetime of a recurrence. That's less than the general population are at risk for BC. Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

best nipplesAnyone have the fish tail nips? I'm scheduled for Nov. 18th, and am curious if any others have had the same. And how are the protectors w/clothes? I love my turtle necks & turtle neck sweaters. I'm guessing that may not be a good choice for a couple of months? Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

TRAM or expander? Need help!!!!GG, I had a BM in April, w/immediate reconstruct/tissue xpanders. I had the xpanders in all summer, had my xchange in Aug (silicone), and am having my nips/tatts done in @ one wk. My xperience was good. I had little discomfort during the fill process and subsequent surgery. I considered the TRAM, but am 40 w/two small children. Didn't want to have such an involved surgery for many reasons, especially recovery time. I, too was afraid of the port, as I'm terrified of needles. Luckily, I had no sensation in either breast during the entire process. My PS was sensitive to my "phobia", and wouldn't let me see the needles, etc. I would close my eyes thru the entire fill, no problems. He also would fill one side, at the same time his nurse would fill the other, quick & easy. I would do the same again. A word of caution, be careful how much info. you gather. Everyone is different in terms of their dx, BC, health, healing, hx, etc. A lot of women experience complications and/or pain thru the xpansion/fill process, but a lot of women do not. For whatever reason, there tends to be more stories of complications/pain posted. I try and gauge how much I read on this site and others. I found myself feeling more depressed & anxious after spending a lot of time reading stories. I backed off, and have a healthier outlook and overall feeling of wellbeing. Good luck in your decision making. It's a difficult process. Take care. Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Ripples!LML, Your breasts will look different (typically) after your xchange. Try not to gauge what your breasts will look like until well after your xchange. Your expanded breasts are temporary, in every sense of the word. I did not have rippling during the fill process, but did have rippling after my xchange. But, since my xchange, my rippling has improved as my silicone implants have settled. After xchange surgery rippling is quite common. In fact, my PS said mine probably wouldn't improve, so it's been a nice bonus seeing my ripples diminish. Good luck! Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Unilateral vs Bilateral Mastectomy?Keryl, Did your ins. co. already state no coverage for removal of the healthy breast? Because I had a healthy breast removed (healthy according to them, even though keeping an eye on things) and it was covered. You are at higher risk simply because you had BC in one breast. You're at higher risk for recurrence in the healthy breast (girls, correct me if I'm wrong on this) especially if your cancer was invasive and in lymph nodes. And if you have dense breasts, you are at higher risk. I don't want to scare you, but my ins. co. didn't question the removal of the healthy breast (I had a BM in April). In fact, my BS recommended breast conservation, and I opted for the more aggressive approach, and she was fine w/my decision. I'm not sure what the federal law states, but when I was contemplating my decision, my BS said whatever route I chose, lumpectomy/unilateral/or bilateral, all would be covered by ins. If you are considering having the healthy breast removed, hope this helps. Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Unilateral vs Bilateral Mastectomy?Lauren, Bottom line, you have to do what you think is best for you and your family. I had DCIS in one breast, and an area in my right they were "keeping an eye on." No family hx, BRCA gene negative. I had a BM in April, w/expanders all summer, xchange in Aug, and nips/tatts in @ two wks. I am 40 w/two small children, and didn't want to spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder, waiting & wondering, is it going to come back? My hubby is an actuary, so he's all about stats., so we went the route that reduced my risk of recurrence the most. Now, I have a 2% chance over my lifetime (not 2% every year) that it will come back. I think that's less than the general populations risk. I was stage 0, and some thought the decision was drastic, but I approached it as being aggressive against my cancer, and aggressive in preserving my qualilty of life. I educated myself, and had a lot of consults w/breast specialists and plastic surgeons. As a result, I really felt I made an informed decision. I don't regret my decision for one minute. The thought of my cancer coming back later when my children are old enough to know and understand cancer, and the thought that they might think their mother is going to die makes me crazy. Good luck in your journey. This is a great forum for support and info. Take care, Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

OB/GYN'sThanks girls! Everyone has been great responding w/posts and pm's. I've resolved the issue, after reading everyone's input and talking w/my hubby. I'm sticking w/him. I have my BS for my BC stuff. I don't have a reg. onc. bc I didn't need tx. My surgery was my tx. My ob/gyn is great, so I shouldn't be so hard on him expecting him to be up on the very latest BC stuff. He has a VERY busy practice, so I'm sure it's all he can do to keep up w/ob/gyn stuff! I spoke w/him today bc after reading your posts, I realized I'm having paps done, and I don't have a cervix! This topic he WAS very knowledgeable about, thankfully. Even though I had a total hyster. two yrs. ago, he still does paps to screen for vaginal cancer (very, very low #'s, but he likes to screen anyway). I was having paps every six mos. bc I have a hx. of warty tissue. In fact, he said since I haven't had an abnormal pap in yrs. he suggested paps every other yr. So, I'm breathing a sigh of relief. I wasn't looking forward to finding a new ob/gyn. Best wishes to all, and thanks again. Take care, Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

OB/GYN'sAnyone change ob/gyn's after dx, tx/surgery? My ob/gyn is wonderful, delivered both my children, and have been w/him for 10 yrs. BUT, he doesn't seem to be as knowledgable as I would like re:BC. I just saw him, first time since BM in April, and asked about vitamin D levels, and he had no recommendations or opinion. In fact, said, "I'm not privy to that info.", well, what does that mean?? He can't pick up a medical journal and read the studies? And, for the last couple of years I've seen him every 6 mos. for paps (his suggestion, not mine) and now since I'll be seeing the BS every six months he wants to stagger the appts. so I see the BS once a yr. and him once a yr. So, I'll see someone every six mos. (physical breast exams from both). Which means one pap a year. I still have my ovaries, so I'm hesitant to have only one pap a year. I'm BRCA gene neg., had xpanders all summer, xchange in August (Silicone implants) and nips/tatts in a few wks. No rads or chemo. I think he is a casualty of specialized medicine. Everything is so specialized now, he just sticks w/basic ob/gyn stuff?? It's frustrating, because out of all my docs. I have the longest standing relationship w/him, and completely trust him, etc. I'm looking to him for guidence, and he is not helpful. If I change docs., am I going to find the same w/others because of specialized medicine? I've been thru a lot w/this guy, partial hysterectomy 2yrs. ago (elective surgery), 2 childbirths, BC dx. and now again a prolapsed bladder (I had BIG babies). I'm only 40, believe it or not, and am healthy, but in saying that, I want to remain healthy thus I'm contemplating changing docs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! unhappy with implantsDede, Even though you love your PS, couldn't hurt to consult w/another. 4 yrs. out, you shouldn't be uncomfortable. I'm almost 3 mos. out from my xchange, no discomfort at all. My implants feel like they are a part of my body. In fact, I don't call them my Foobs, bc they are truly a part of me now. Good luck. I assume you have the xpander removed and replaced? That really sucks. But, I agree w/you, being cancer-free IS worth everything!! Keep your chin up, and good luck. anyone there not find the expander process very painful?sbmolee, I will definitely keep everyone posted after my hips/tatts. Can't wait for this final procedure!! I saw my ob/gyn this week, first time since BM. And everyone LOVED 'the girls'! They oohed and awed, what a nice boost to my ego (having gone from an A to a C). Speaking of ob/gyn's, I have a question. Mine does not seem to be at all imformative @ BC. And he says things like, "I'm not privy to that info", what does that mean??? He can't pick up a medical journal and read the studies?? I asked about vitamin D levels, he had no recomendation and very little opinion. I love my ob, he delivered both my kids, and I've been w/him for 10 yrs., but I'm a bit concerned that he doesn't appear to be up on BC info. I had an elective hysterectomy two yrs. ago at 39 (prolapsed uterus and bladder, I looked like a 70 yo women!), kept my ovaries. So, even though I do not have the BRCA gene, I'm still concerned. I'm thinking about changing ob's. What do you girls think? I see my BS in 3 wks. and will ask who she recommends. Any input would be greatly appreciated. anyone there not find the expander process very painful?Daisy, I had a very positive experience, from BM to xchange. I'm 3 wks. from having my nips/tatts done, and other than some rippling after the xchange, no complaints. I had very little discomfort during the fill process, but also was pro-active about taking valium to relax muscles (& me!). I did not read anything about fillls, etc. until I was well into the process. My motto, sometimes ignorance is bliss. This website is excellent, however, the downside is having too much info., which can cause anxiety. There were days when I felt worse reading posts on this website, so I decreased my time, and found my mood improved. On the flipside, I've received wonderful support & help from this site, too. Everything in moderation... Take some deep breaths, and pamper yourself beforehand. Take time for yourself, etc. I had projects, magazines, books, movies, etc. waiting for me during my recovery, which really helped. But truthfully, I didn't need most of it bc I was up and back to my normal routine (for the most part) w/in 2 weeks. Just remember, everyone is different in terms of healing, health, etc. Good luck! unhappy with implantsPam, I am now 10 wks out from my exchange, and am seeing a lot of improvement w/my rippling and settling. When I last posted on this thread, the rippling on my cancer side was really bad. It looked like I had a big dent running vertical across the center of my breast. But, in a bra and in clothes I looked great, so I didn't mind too much. I haven't really looked at my breasts closely in the last week or so, and today noticed improvement. The dent is not as pronounced and that side has dropped a little. Actually, both sides have dropped a little, and I am looking less like hamburger bun lady, and a little more natural. I just wanted you to know that things can get better, slowly, and hopefully, but surely Teresa Dx 2/8/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |
