Positive Expander FillOh yes, I wish I had been warned about sneezing! Yikes. And the muscle sensation all the way around...not really painful but not comfortable either. I'm wondering how he can possibly expand me any more when I'm already feeling like I'm about to pop? Do any of you also find lying down makes it feel worse? I'm also wondering about the odd shape with my expanders--I have my first fill this week, but had 100cc in each side at surgery....they don't match and are shaped very strangely! PS assures me it will get better and they'll match. One side was immediate recon, the other was recon after mast. done back in May....anyone else have them done this way? Expanders Causing Rib Cage to AcheSo glad to know I'm not overly weird....I just had my expanders put in yesterday, and I have a band of pain all around, front, sides and back. And I HATE taking painkillers, but I'm going to have to give in pretty soon if it doesn't ease up. (I took a nap when I got home from the hospital today, and not thinking, only propped up on two pillows.....it literally took me 20 minutes to get out of bed! How embarrasing. My abs are strong enough to pull me up, but I'm so sore even all along my sternum that I can't use those muscles without causing screaming pain. My PS had to work with one "freshly" done mast., and the other side was done back in May. (My surgeon wouldn't let me do both sides at once.) Hope that doesn't create problems with symmetry. Have any of you had recon. done that way? He told me that initially there would be some difference because the older wound wouldn't he able to stretch quite as much at first. I'm so glad it's chilly weather and I can wear snuggly, thick tops that don't much! Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Femara and TamoxifenI know this is an old thread.....but putting info out on alternative treatments isn't trying to "debunk" what works for other people. It's simply helping people become informed so that they make their own decisions. All treatment options, conventional or alternative, should be explored by anyone who chooses to. Quoting info from other studies is just passing on information. Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Has anyone heard of taking iodine for BC?Has anyone experienced an increase in hot flashes when taking iodine? I'm taking one Iodoral tablet every other day, and on those days I'm definitely having a lot more hot flashes. I guess my poor thyroid is confused....maybe I'll hold off on the iodine and let it recover from chemo! Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Doctor Choice for Chemical-Free Treatment? Thanks for all the advice--hopefully I'll find a good naturopath or integrated med. dr. soon. And LJ13, mainly I just want to find someone who will do things like monitor blood levels etc., and who is knowledgeable about bc specifically. I don't feel the need to be validated for not taking Tamoxifen, but it would be nice to be assured that the supplements and dosages are where I should be. Doctor Choice for Chemical-Free Treatment?Stacey, thanks for the advice. I would ask about the ins. paying for a naturopath, but since you are in Canada, I think things are different for you! Aren't you the same Stacey who had the punctured lung earlier this year, right after I had mine? Glad to be rid of that port and all its connotations...how about you? In any case, it's always good to have support from others who are telling the drs. to stick their Tamoxifen. I feel like it's trading one possible risk for several others that are at least as bad, if not worse. What are you doing in lieu of the Tamox, if anything? Here's to being chemical-free! Doctor Choice for Chemical-Free Treatment?Hi all, I am choosing not to take Tamoxifen after having a mastectomy, 6 tx of chemo, and having another mastectomy soon. I've researched A LOT, and have settled on supplementing my diet with indole 3 carbinol, iodine, vitamin D and folic acid, in addition to a daily Centrum. I'm confident with this, but would love to have a dr. who would help me monitor my levels, etc. and be supportive in this. If any of you have found a dr. who goes this route, what kind of dr.?? I've checked with a chiropractor and a "nutritional counseling" DO, and neither of them seemed to be on the same page. Any suggestions?? Thanks! Has anyone heard of taking iodine for BC?Illegal? So we can excuse our dr's for being so pig-headed about the "drugs as usual" approach, huh? In any case, I am so pumped after doing tons of reading (aside from the tired eyes)--I am definitely going with the iodine and indole 3 carbinol. Tons of literature about how both are wonderful at doing what Tamoxifen does, with NO funky and/or life-threatening side effects! I've been praying for guidance on this, and I have stumbled upon one thing after another pointing me in this direction. We need to get the word out! Has anyone heard of taking iodine for BC?I'm so glad this thread got started...I've just finished 6 rounds of TC chemo and want my body to heal, not be bombarded with more drugs, i.e. Tamoxifen. I've found lots of encouraging info about iodine also (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2452979 is just from July of this year) and am pretty resolved to going that route and "Just Saying No" to Tamox. Has anyone else done this?? I had heard that taking one Iodoral tablet daily was good....but that's not nearly 50 mg, right? I'm currently looking for a dr. who will work with me on this approach, as my onc. and my surgeon both are stuck in the Tamox rut and look at me like I have a death wish for not wanting to take it. Take Tamoxifen? Weighing risks & benefitsSherrie, I've wondered the same thing but haven't asked my onc yet because I'm stalling on having the Tamoxifen discussion! Had my last chemo tx today
and she wants to see me in 4 weeks, when she'll be shoving that prescription into my hot little hand.... Anyway, that's a question I plan to ask--are we really in menopause from the chemo, or do we really not know until a year or so has passed? And is the Tamox. ineffective or harmful if we do stay in menopause? She told me early on that at my age (44), I'm on the fence in terms of whether the ovaries will kick back up again. As the 70's song says, "I'm not gonna let it bother me tonight", I'm just going to enjoy being through with the chemo, get through the couple of fever-y days after the Neulasta shot, and get on with life.Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?Gail, that's a beautiful horse in your avatar. But on your question of 4 vs 6, I'm one of the people who had 6 (note the past tense...today was the last one!!). I had a "footprint" of cancer cells in two nodes, and that's why I was told I had to have 6 treatments. Looks like our dx was almost the same, except you had nice, clean nodes, so that's great! And don't worry, that leg hair will settle down soon and you can skip shaving for a while. Deanna, I too am worried about how all this Neulasta is affecting my body. I've had it every tx, and am supposed to have the last one tomorrow. It worries me to have 6 of these shots. Has anyone else here had 6 tx with Neulasta each time?? I guess I'm going to go ahead and do it, because I sure don't want to wind up in the crappy ER close to me and having my husband say, "I knew you should've had the shot".....but it's so scary to wonder if I've been doing something harmful to myself all along. Hell, chemo isn't exactly vitamins, is it. If I have to read something about weighing risk vs benefits one more time, I may scream. How does one Aproach Onco about Alternative threatmentI'm so glad to read everyone's input on this topic. I'm finishing 6 rounds of chemo tomorrow, so I've "done the work" as far as that goes, but I'm fervently looking for good info with which to arm myself against my onc. pushing Tamoxifen down my throat. So far, iodine and vitamin D are the main things I plan to go with--one Iodoral tablet and 2000 iu of Vit. D. However, I strongly suspect that the onc. will not give a fig about this and I may end up not going back to her after I reject the Tamox. (I already declined to be in a study regarding the chemo, so I guess I failed to bring in that extra money for the office!) I'm a little stumped about finding the right kind of doctor who will work with me on this--the different titles: holistic, naturopath, chiropractic, etc..... In any case, I still have another mastectomy ahead of me whenever my surgeon says I'm ready post-chemo (my choice, nothing was found in this one but I'm taking the target away), so I'm not turning my back totally on traditional drs, but I believe God did put things here for us to heal ourselves with and why not investigate? That being said, I also believe a lot of cancer is caused by things we've created ourselves to scum up our environment, but that's another topic. Have a great day everyone~ Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?Welcome Pageroo! Sorry you have to join our little family, but we're glad to have you. This forum has been a lifeline for me many times through the TC journey. How many treatments are you going to have? I'm 44, have had mastectomy of the "problem" breast, and will be having the other done prophylactically as soon as my body recovers from the chemo. I will have had a total of 6 treatments, and honestly, it's been nowhere near as bad as I feared. I was a wreck beforehand (and I'm usually a pretty tough cookie, if I do say so myself)--the very word "chemo" would cause me to puddle up. There are lots of annoying side effects, and of course the mess of losing your hair, but as far as really going down for the count, I haven't experienced much of that. Very little fatigue, no nausea at all. I even wondered (until my hair fell out and my periods stopped) if they were really giving me anything! So, expect things to sail along and just come here for all the info about anything crazy you may experience...I guarantee that no matter what it is, someone else will have had the same thing! Take Tamoxifen? Weighing risks & benefitslarousse, do you happen to know the situation of the 2 women who had recurrences after not taking Tamoxifen? Such as what extent the original bc was, what surgery, chemo, etc. they had? Jule, here is the most recent and informative link regarding iodine and breast cancer--it's from July of this year and is very encouraging: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2452979 I haven't investigated much yet on this site, but I'm going to. I did hear from someone who chose to forego taking an AI and is being treated and monitored by a dr. who is using natural supplements (but not iodine, I don't think). I feel a little in a tizzy trying to make this decision, but I just have a bad gut feeling about yet more drugs in my body. I know I'll have a fight on my hands with the onc...sigh. I have a pretty healthy diet now (my only vice is those evening cocktails with the hubby), I'm vegetarian, eat organics as much as possible, whole grains and all that jazz, but I didn't make these changes until I was 40 (I'm almost 45 now), and apparently the bc was already lurking by that time. Damn those hot dogs I used to eat! Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?Hi everyone, I'm getting close to "graduation"...#6 of 6 will be on 9/17! As usual, I have a question to pose: I've been scheduled to have my port removed on 9/19, the Friday after final tx. Normally, I have the Neulasta shot on Thurs., and have been running a fever for 2 days afterwards, which is a little worse each time, with chills and all that. I'm seriously thinking of just passing on the Neulasta for this last tx. I can't have the port removed if I have a fever, which I likely will if I have the shot...plus I don't like thinking about why Neulasta is causing a fever in the first place. Anyway, I'm just wondering how many of you didn't have the Neulasta every time--seems like it's a hit or miss thing with different oncs? I'm thinking I can just be really careful for those last 3 weeks and not go out anywhere with the unwashed masses. BTW, my thin, old man hair is getting longer, but not filling back in. I didn't think it would start growing back until I was done? Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

2 more port issuesI've had my port in for soon-to-be 6 treatments of TC, and I can also see the tubing near my collarbone from the port. It's no big deal--just the way it's put in. Also, I had the numbing stuff put on me for my first couple of treatments, but they used a freezing spray kind of thing. After one of the nurses told me she knew of someone who had their skin damaged from the spray, causing the incision to open, etc., I said I'd try it without it. It's NOT BAD AT ALL. It seems as if it would be horrible because of the location, but they pop it in really quickly and it's no worse than getting a stick anywhere else. Don't be afraid--it'll be fine. These nurses know their stuff. That being said, I'm really happy to be getting mine out soon after my last treatment..... Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Take Tamoxifen? Weighing risks & benefitsI've been reading tons of articles on iodine and how it works against breast cancer.....it's really amazing and not at all surprising that the medical community at large doesn't promote this info--who's gonna get rich if we all just take iodine instead of those nice, costly drugs (and the other drugs needed to offset their side effects)? I'm sure my doctor will pooh-pooh the very idea of using something natural (HA HA!) to prevent cancer. Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Take Tamoxifen? Weighing risks & benefitsI'm also pondering these same questions: I'm almost through with chemo (Thank GOD!!), and really do not want to take Tamoxifen (or anything else, for that matter). I want my body to have a vacation from chemicals, at least for a while. I also asked my onc about the oophorectomy and got the answer about how our bodies still produce some estrogen...I had asked her about it as an alternative to Tamox. however, and she said she would "fall on her sword" to make me take it. Uh, I hope the sword isn't too sharp because I'm really opposed to it. If anything, I had thought taking an AI after having my ovaries removed would be a little better, but Jule, you say you had a horrible experience with that? I'm about to be 45 and don't want to feel 90 either! This is so exasperating!!! Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Alternatives to Tamoxifen?I've been doing more reading, and am still unconvinced to take Tamoxifen. My onc said she would "fall on her sword" to get me to take it, but I'm not going along (let's hope her sword isn't too sharp). If anything, I'm thinking strongly of having an oophorectomy and then taking an AI rather than Tamoxifen, since they seem to have fewer life-threatening side effects. Has anyone done that? I have my last
chemo treatment in 2 weeks (never thought I'd be through with 6 of them!), and I know the subject will come up again at that visit. I so wish the drs. would also tell us about non-horrible-drug alternatives, but thankfully I'm a big reader.Dx 3/14/2008, IDC, 2cm, Stage IIb, Grade 2, 2/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Anyone on just Taxotere and Cytoxan?Sherri & Sherry, I had the same scalp problem at I think the same time of treatment (I had posted about it on this board when I was going nuts from the itch). Mine did go away after a day or so, after I thought I was going to have to submerge my head in the swimming pool just to make it stop! I put aloe vera gel on it and it helped cool the burn a little.
