Tests, Treatments & Side Effects + Radiation Therapy - Before, During and After, Created: Oct 23, 2008 04:00 pm
Is it all in my head?I just had my third treatment today and I came home feeling kinda weird.......really tired, foggy and just not myself. Could I have any effects from the treatment this soon or can I attribute it to the stress of it all, or maybe coming down with the flu or some thing? In any case I'm crawling into bed something I havent done during the day for years! Goodnite |

Margins?Bessie, Thanx so much for your reply.....your posts are always very informative and I am impressed with your vast knowledge and the time and energy you put in to helping so many of us!Yes, that is right, the oncologist is fine with 2.9mm margins and does not feel there is any reason for boosts. My pathology report does nor include ER+or ER-. The oncologist does not feel this is important as he feels that the risks of Tamoxifen out weigh any benefit. This same treatment was confirmed by a second oncologist who came in today with the first one.I am feeling more comfortable after reading posts from you and Jordymom.Thanx again! |

Margins? My surgeon and my oncologist do not agree what is an acceptable margin .....surgeon wants to do re excision to get bigger margins before I begin radiation but the oncologist does not feel there is any need to delay radiation as the margins are OK. The surgeon thinks that if I dont go for the re excision at least have boosts, the radiation oncologists see no reason at all to do the boosts. My margins are 2.9mm. I feel totaly frustrated with this and really think it is unfair to put a patient in a position where he is forced to try and sort through this whole treatment myself. Any advise would e much appreciared! |

confusedBessie, Thanx for your reply. I will start making a stink today now that you have confirmed how important important the ER/PR status is. My margins are 2.9mm and that seems to be causing some difference in opinion...surgeon wants bigger margins. oncologist says 2.9 is OK. Again I thank you! |

confusedI have just returned for my first appt at the cancer center since I was dx with DCIS 7mm Grade 2 with margins of 2.9 mm. I waited 7 weeks for this app with the radiation oncologist hoping have some questions answered and a clearer picture of my treatment. I'm more confused than ever! My pathology report did not state if the DCIS was ER/PR positive or negative......... If and why is this important to know? The surgeon had told me he wants to do a reexcision as he was not happy with the margins......the oncologist says the margins are fine no need for the reexcision. I was not aware that radiation should be started within 12 weeks .....if I do go with the surgeons suggestion this would delay the start of radiation past that time period. When my husband asked the oncologist what she would do if it was her body she said she would have a masectomy. This was at the end of appt but it left me feeling totally confused Today I am so frustrated with this whole process I am thinking I do not want to go through this again and maybe bi mastectomy with implants are the answer but I know the wait for appt with a surgeon and PS to gather some info is going to be months. |

Travel to Large Breast Care CenterMom2two It sounds like I'm going through pretty much the same thoughts as you are with a dx of DCIS and considering going to a well known treatment center. I have not made up my mind yet as to if I will go with the recommended radiation treatment or a mastectomy with reconstruction.Sometimes I feel like the more I read and the more people who give me advice the more confused I get.I have not yet met with the radiation oncologist yet and hope her answers to questions like ''what are the long term effects'' will help make my decision. I am suprised she hesitated when you asked what she treatment she would do......thought she would go with the radiation, no question! I hope all goes well for you where ever you have your treatment and what ever you go with.Lets us know, Elaine |

Trouble with biopsy scar?It has been about 2 months since I had the biopsy that came back with DCIS. The biopsy scar seemed to be healing well but the last few weeks has developed a small lump on it. The lump is very tender and any movement or pressure on it is very painful. I was at my dr today about it and he did not know what it could be but is sending me to a surgeon.Has anyone had anything like this ......is there such a thing as a stitch that does not desolve and causes a problem? My concern is they will have to open up the incision again and will have to delay the start of radiation until it has healed again. Any thoughts most appreciated. Good wishes to all, Elaine |

What about an MRI?Breast Friends, I am still trying to figure out the right treatment for my newly dx DCIS. I had a mamogram followed by a biopsy. I want to feel comfortable that there are not any other areas of DCIS, or worse, it either breast. Would an MRI be the best way to get additional comformation on the dx? I Again I thank all of you for helping out, and wish all a good day! Elaine |

reconstruction done in Victoria or CalgaryJill, Thank you so much for your reply.I am still waiting for the call from the cancer center to find out when I have an appointment and with which oncologist. I have been dx with DCIS.by a surgeon in Calgary but I am now living in Victoria. I am glad you think so highly of your surgeon and that part went well for you.I am not sure if I will go with radiation of the one breast or have a bilateral masectomy with reconstruction. Thats interesting that they did not do anything to the good breast, I do understand their reason, but I guess there is part of me that just wants to do all I can to lessen further worry and put this behind me.I am certainly open to what the oncologst suggests but I also know myself and have to be comfortable with my decision.I wish you all the best and thank you fo your help. preventative bi-lat mast for DCISIm always interested when I read posts from women who have had masectomys for DCIS. I was diagnose with DCIS a few weeks ago and am waiting ro see the oncologist, It seems from the surgeon who did the biopsy and my family dr the suggested treatment will be radiation. After much thought and much reading ,I am concidering a bilateral masectomy with implants. It might seem extreme but radiation scares me because of possible permanent damage to lungs or heart and the factor that if the BC comes back I can not do radiation a second time and reconstruction would be more involved. I know with a masectomy there is still that small amount of tissue remaining that could be a problem. I still have concerns that the mamo has missed something in my ''good'' breast or other DCIS in the ''problem'' breast. Is an MRI scan useful after a mamogram?I am sooo concerened about something being missed and scared of any surprises down the road that could have been detected earlier. Initialy when I was dx I was so relieved that I did not need a mastectomy that I cant believe Im now thinking I might ''choose'' to have one! This whole experience has been so confusing. I guess I dont have total confdence in doctors and still doubt my ability to make the right decision. Any thought? I do value the opinions of all of you so much! |

A dumb question...butI know this is probably dumb but Ive got to ask,,,,I have just been dx with DCIS and radiation seems to be the suggested treatment. I have read that after radiation any reconstruction, if needed because of further bouts with bc, would be difficult. Because I dont want to be constantly worried about bc, because I my 56yr old breasts are much less than perfect, and because Im concerned about radiation and tamoxofil is there a procedure that removes the tissue from the breast and puts in an implant and can do a breast lift at the same time? I dont really understand a masectomy? Does it always remove an amount of skin and the nipple? Just trying to figure all of this out and make the best decision! |

Calgary or VictoriaHello to everyone, Last week, as the moving van was arriving to move me from Calgary to Victoria, I got the phone call from my doctor telling me my biopsy came back positive for cancer. Not a good day! I am trying to make a decision where I should have my treatment. Victoria would be more convenient, but the best treatment and care is most important, so I would travel to Calgary if necessary.Any thought or experiences? Thanx and a good day to all, Canadian |
