Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISI will try to fix the link. Radiation necessary in an early stage cancerThank you to the Moderators who finally got around to cleaning out this thread. It was just so bizarre to let this go on so long--- One specific example--the woman who admitted she has continued to smoke cigarettes after her diagnoses, and proclaimed that others were "risk-averse"...as though they were wimps. .... uhhh...yeah...okay.....some of us non-smokers are risk-averse...guilty as charged. Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISmidsum1107- When you write: "On the one hand, I can start next week. On the other, I might be able to shorten the time frame and achieve what appears at this time to be the same result." I would like to make clear the time frame was not, and is not, a motivator for seeking out second opinions about other methods of radiation. If the treatment I thought was right for me was longer than the others, I would have signed up! I have decided to have 3D Conformal radiation. Thanks for all of you who have held my hand! It was a lot of help! |

Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISHi Karen, Thanks for following up. When you ask "What did you find out about the Contura procedure? Did your doctors feel you could do it?" They decided I could go forward with Contura. I declined the Contura. I declined it in spite of the fact that all clinicians involved expressed the opinion that the Contura is superior to Mammosite due to the ability to titrate the dosages of rads to different areas of the breast. However, I saw this proposal as a change in treatment plan for which I was not prepared. Or maybe having more time to think about it just plain gave me cold feet. There is even less clinical experience with the Contura than with the Mammosite, and that made me nervous. The clinicians are also clear that the situation can change during treatment (structurally, or getting infections), and it is not out of the realm of possibility that they could have to pull the balloon. My breast is healing nicely, and I really started to question the wisdom of having another incision and the device installed for 9 or more days, with the possibility that something could change, and I would have to finish with another method. When you ask: "Or did they decide that you need whole breast radiation?" My experience to date is that I have choices, and partial breast radiation is still a choice. However, "They" continue to say that lumpectomy followed by whole breast radiation is the "gold standard". I can have Accelerated Partial Breast Iraddiation (APBI), but it is not the "gold standard." I do not want whole breast radiation for this tiny DCIS, excised with nice wide clear margins. My path report shows comedonecrosis. That is a concern, and is one of the things that contnues to influence me to have radiation. I am now under consideration for 3D conformal. (I am probably also driving everybody crazy, but that is another matter entirely!! I would welcome any insights and experiences others could share. I am going to link an article below that I found very interesting. Maybe others would comment on it as well. Although I believe that APBI is more suitable for me, this is another article that says it should only be done as part of a clinical trial. (The clinical trial already has their quota of people with my profile, so it is not something I can do.) Dx 7/17/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Radiation necessary in an early stage cancerJust a comment here- There have been a number of studies referenced and excerpted throughout this long thread. I think somewhere amidst the pile, some have commented that certain of these studies are recent, and others are not. I would like to encourage readers to look at the dates of data collection and publication of studies referenced here or anywhere else. It might influence how you look at the information presented. For example, if I am not mistaken, although the springerlink referenced above ("Factors associated with local breast cancer recurrence after lumpectomy alone" ) may have only been uploaded to the website a couple of years ago, the article was originally published in Annals of Surgical Oncology in July 1996. I am not picking on anybody here. As has been pointed out, most people's intent here is to inform and educate. Knowing the dates of these studies helps me put them into an important context. I can't tell you the number of times I have gotten excited by some "finding", only to look at the date, and know I need to look at whether a particular study has really held up over the years. The degree of hormone receptivity?Hi- I have seen several women write in the forums that their carcinoma cells are "VERY hormone receptive", or words to that effect. I've looked and looked, but cannot find a scale describing the degrees of receptivity. Could someone do a link to such a scale and/or explanation? How does a higher or lower degree affect treatment decisions for the hormone therapy or other interventions? Does a typical Receptor Studies report show a value indicating degrees of receptivity, or is there an advanced test that gives people this information telling them this? My report says "ER and PR: 2+ and 3+ scores respectively of the Allred DC ..scoring system were used...." Thanks for any help. Dx 7/17/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Radiation necessary in an early stage cancerDear Summer, You wrote: "I am sure us cancer patients who underwent radiation therapy are happy to hear it does not affect survival benefit at the 20 year mark. Kinda was wondering if rads treatment might work against our favor. ty MarieKelly" I re-read this many times, and cannot discern if you were being sarcastic or not. Could you clarify your meaning? All in all, do the Moderators here ever lock threads, and let them sink to the depths of the cyber-sea? I am asking because of anything on these boards, this thread is causing me sleeplessness. But I try to tell myself that this thread has become a battle of personal crusades, rather than one intended to help the original poster, so it should be viewed in that light. Or should it?

Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISHi Everyone, CAT scan shows that there would not be sufficient distance between the Mammosite balloon and the skin surface for me to use this method of radiation. Now there is a new "Plan B". They are assessing my new CAT scan to see if I could use another method called the Contura Multi-Lumen Balloon. If I do this correctly, I will give you a link to the manufacturer's web site HERE. (If done incorrectly, please try Google The Contura does not require such a wide skin to balloon distance as Mammosite. However, it will be a day or so before I know what they think of this for me. This is like waiting for the results of an audition without knowing if you want the part! Has anybody done the Contura, or otherwise have any insights? This is even newer and less frequently used than Mammosite. Hey, I'm willing to be a pioneer- but gee whiz, I feel like I've been thrown a curve, and don't know how big of a deal this curve is. P.S. Karen, thanks so much for the HUGS (back at ya!), your sharing, and your interest in my situation. Really appreciate it. Dx 7/17/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISChris, Thank you so much. That is very reassuring. Especially when you admit to being kind of squeamish ...me, too.....I am the person who is covering her eyes at the gory parts in movies. I have read the thread titled, "Has Anyone Done Mammosite Radiation therapy". Lots of good information. That thread has also seemed to evolve into a support group for broader personal issues, which is nice to see. I was reluctant to post my specific questions in there as it seemed like it might be distracting from the ongoing events they are addressing in their dialogue. Next CT scheduled for Wednesday. We shall see. Thanks again. Rita Dx 7/17/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISThey have decided they would like to another CT scan next week, to see if the situation looks different-i.e., more suitable for Mammosite. I am told this is not highly unusual. I appreciate any comments or experiences that anyone would like to share. Thanks to everyone on this board for sharing and caring. Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISDear Sue- Thanks for your note. What you wrote- ( "I really like the idea of only irradiating the area around where the cancer was") -is what is motivating me. I really do not want whole breast radiatiation for my particular problem. Yes, the surgeon did tell me that one is on antibiotics the whole time the Mammosite cath is in-- and aside from the discomfort of wearing it, infection is/was my major concern. On the 3D Conformal high-dose partial breast irradiation--with my nerves being on edge, I've forgotten the particulars- is this a 5 to 6 week program, or does it vary? Thank you kindly. Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISDear Sue, Thank you for your kind response. It helped alot. I've had the pre-rad CT and SIM, but, unfortunately, the answer as to whether or not I can do the Mammosite method is not a "slam dunk." The jury is still out, as there is a question about the distance between balloon and skin. They are supposed to come up with the decision tomorrow. If this procedure is not suitable for me, I am supposed to go to "Plan B", but I really don't have a "Plan B". Thanks again. Dx 7/17/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

Tests, Treatments & Side Effects + Radiation Therapy - Before, During and After, Created: Aug 4, 2008 09:11 pm
Considering MammoSite Rad for DCISHello, This is my first post on this Board. I had a needle localization followed by lumpectomy on 7/28. In considering the variety of methods for having radiation treatments administered, the Mammosite with balloon made the most sense to me for my situation. Especially appealing was focusing the radiation on the site of the surgery, and not irradiating the entire breast. I am hoping to hear from my sisters who went before me in this experience, and perhaps others trying to increase their understanding and make decisions also. I am scheduled for a CT Scan and SIM day after tomorrow. If I am a suitable subject for Mammosite, and decide to go with this, the balloon device would be installed on Tuesday, Aug 12 by my surgeon, then rechecked by scan at the oncologist that week. The actual 5 day procedure would not start until Monday the 18th. This timing make sense? Believe it or not, the part I am most freaked out by right now is the length of time you have to have the balloon device installed, while keeping it dry, clean, and not dislodging it, while living your life and traveling twice a day for the treatments. No showers. How in the world did you ladies sleep with that thing in your breast?? How much of this device protrudes out of you, and how wide is that part? Does it hurt? I did see the device, but I can't picture wearing it around the clock for 11 days. Advice, tips, and hand-holding would really be appreciated here. Thank you.
