Biography

Twenty six years after having a mastectomy for a tiny estrogen receptor positive tumor and no further treatment, I got the bad news that I had metastatic cancer after having gone to the ER for chest pain.  It showed up as thickening in the lining of my lungs, some enlarged lymph nodes in my chest, and three spots in my liver.  A biopsy confirmed it is breast cancer, and I started taking Arimidex almost right away.  Luckily without side effects other than fierce hot flashes.  Those are finally under control as long as I take two tbsp. of ground flax seed every day.  I am in Arm 1 of a study comparing Arimidex alone with Arimidex plus Faslodex.  If the Arimidex doesn't keep working they they will switch me to Arm 2, and I will get both drugs.  For 3 months in a row the tumor markers have gone down every month.  The last CT scan showed everything shrinking.  It was quite a shock to learn today that the tumor markers have gone back up nearly to where they were at the beginning.  I was depressed for several hours but have calmed down, thanks to my Qi gong exercises.  I started those at the direction of a Qi gong practitioner and the results have been miraculous.  I haven't worried at all and haven't needed any anti-anxiety medications.  It has to be the exercises, because I haven't been this relaxed since I can't remember when--maybe ever.

Tumor Marker - Talk Me Down Please

In April I learned I have advanced breast cancer after a mastectomy in 1982 and no treatment in between.  What a shock.  I have been on Arimidex, and every month the tumor markers have gone down.  I just got last week's results and find they are back up almost as high as before I started treatment.  Still not high--CA 15-3 is 27.2 and CA 29-29 is 36.6--both within normal.  But the change in direction freaked me out.  I'm glad to have found this website.  After reading the posts, I feel a bit better.   Right now I'm most freaked out by the fact that 31/2 weeks ago I developed a persistent diarrhea.  I've been tested for parasites and C. diff with all negative results.  My onc wanted me to see a gasteroenterologist right away, but the soonest I can get in is Aug. 22.  I'm pissed, because I don't think my immune system can handle both breast cancer and constant diarrhea, and I wonder if the numbers are proving me right.  Anyone ever have something like this right out of the blue?
