I am 53 years old, perimenopausal, married 31 years to a wonderful guy, have two terrific daughters, ages 24 and 27, and own two of the sweetest bichon frise dogs in the world. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer newly post-menopausal at age 55. At the time, she had invasive breast cancer with one node involved. After a round of chemotherapy and total mastectomy, she was cured until year 7, when the cancer metastasized to her brain, liver, jaw, heart, and lungs. She died within 3 weeks of the second diagnosis.
On September 2, 2008, I had an ultrasound and magnified mammogram of two suspicious areas. On September 4, I had 2 biopsies, one by ultrasound and one by stereotactic radiology. One September 5, the biopsy results were in. The stereotactic specimen showed DCIS, nuclear grade 1, micropapillary with associated microcalcifications. On September 8, I had my first appointment with the breast surgeon who saw another site on the mammogram that may need to be biopsied after an MRI, but after much review decided not to do anything at this time.
Lumpectomy surgery was performed on for October 1 with no change in Stage or grade. This time there was some cribiform along with the micropapillary cells, but not enough to change the grade. On October 6, I met with the medical oncologist for the first time. Based on family history, she suggests an oophorectomy in addition to radiation and hormone therapy.
On October 14, I saw the genetics counselor, who based on my family history, suggested that I get tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Results to come on October 29. Based on results, I will take treatment down a different path.

Skin Cream during radiationToday was the 14th treatment. My skin is very light and from the first day of radiation, my breast skin turned pink. However, the ALRA cream applied immediately after the treatment, after my morning shower, and before bed at night has been a miracle. My skin is soft and intact. I'm using ALRA deodorant on that side too, which seems to be working and is keeping the tender underarm skin intact as well. I've been using Dove soap, unscented, and it's kept my skin moist as well. All these things add up. 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

Effexor- please I need feedbackIn the past I tried Paxil, which exhausted me, and then switched to Effexor-XR for anxiety. I've been on it for years and it has been wonderful. I no longer have any anxiety that is beyond what would be normal for a situation. The only very negative side effect is that it has ruined my sex drive, but a small price to pay for feeling "normal". 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

Tamoxifen - Start During or After Radiation Tx?Just curious how is this usually prescribed. Do you take the Tamoxifen during rads tx, directly after rads tx, or a specific time after rads tx? What are the pros and cons of each way? 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

Loss of AppetiteJust wondering if anyone else is experiencing a loss of appetite with radiation treatments? It is a positive side effect for me, but I can see it being troublesome for normal weight people. Not sure if the loss of appetite is related to the exhaustion or something else. Your thoughts? 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

Fever and Fatique before dxBold, So sorry you're feeling so bad. Just curious if your doctor checked you for mononucleosis yet. I had the same low grade fever and unbelievable fatigue when I was diagnosed. The doctor kept telling me it was in my head until I ended up in the ER for a side effect of it, and they finally did a test. That was 27 years ago. My breast cancer was just diagnosed 9/2008. radiation and breast shrinkageI'm currently having radiation. After the 7th treatment, I noticed that my affected breast was smaller and more pert than it had been. It's not very obvious with clothes, but it's obvious to me when I'm not. It's the price of the gift of life! 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

Anone else exhausted?Annie, I have had 9 rad treatments to date and no chemo. I am getting more tired toward the end of my work day and am dragging to the treatment now, but make sure I get into bed super early each night to make sure I can function in my work world. The radiologist said the exhaustion is more pronounced for those who have also had chemo. Has anyone used Miaderm?Hi! I read about Alra cream on this board and decided to go that route. I've used it 3 times a day since the day I started radiation. I have finished treatment 7 and my breast is definitely pink. The nurse thought it would start weeping, but the skin is still soft and intact. I put the alra on right after the treatment while still in the dressing room of the facility and then in the morning after my shower and at night before I go to bed. It isn't cheap, but I think well worth it to date. www.alra.com Regards, Jo Ann from Maryland 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

OCTOBER 2008 rad groupHi! Finished 7 treatments and my breast has really shrunk! Didn't think it would bother me, but it does. Anyway, the ALRA cream is doing a great job keeping the pink skin intact and the skin soft and smooth. I'm using it 3 times a day. In fact, I bought 3 bottles - 1 for my purse, to put on directly after the treatment, while in the facility and the other 2 for home. I'm sure I'll have to buy at least one more before treatments are finished since I'm pretty liberal with it. 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

OCTOBER 2008 rad groupGotta tell you, I am not impressed with the group of techs that are treating me. Most of them just aren't compassionate. It's really sad to me, because as a health care worker (RN) who is currently working on the admin side of things, I always felt when you got that way, it was time to hang up your hat and find something else to do. The most important part of dealing with patients is opening your heart and being empathetic. Most people only need to know that they are being cared for in the best way and with their best interest at heart. Some want to know all the details, but most are content to know that someone who cares is there. Anyway, day 7 is done. I'm starting to get some skin freckles. My hubby who has been out of town all week said the skin is definitely pinker than when he left. I'm still functioning at normal energy and managing the schedule with work. Tomorrow, we're doing something nice...going to the first of our friends' child's wedding. Looking forward to having fun with old friends - good food, drink, and dancing. I could use it! 10/1/08 Lumpectomy Left Breast; 10/22/08 BRCA- ; http://joannklein.blogspot.com Dx 9/5/2008, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 1, ER+/PR+ |

The Ups and Downs of a Possible Diagnosis at 21JenMarie, You are definitely not alone! All of us here have been through the anxiety of not knowing, which is the worst part of this process. At least if you know, you can move forward with a plan. Don't know if you have checked it out, but there is a great website for young breast cancer survivors called www.youngsurvival.org (young survival coalition). There are likely a lot more young women your age, which may make you feel more comfortable with their answers. Good luck...praying that all is well. Cancer Funding Has Flatlined?!If it meant that funding can be found, I'll be happy to talk to anyone about it. Until it affects people with deep pockets, no one gives a hoot!
