I have silicone implants and have had them for about a year now.  I look fine in clothes and often forego wearing a bra because I don't need one, and I don't fill in the cups anyway.  But I was horrified to catch my reflection at the gym and discover that my implants move up and down when i flex my arms.  Embarassed  UGH, now I'm very self conscious about it and have taken to wearing a padded bra that I don't fill out to avoind the freak show in public.  Is this normal?

Hi butterfly8,

The implants are under the pectoral muscles.  When you flex your arm muscles, the chest muscles tighten and squish your implants.  It can be quite annoying when they bulge under your arms.

butterfly, Women who have implants under the muscle have this in varying degrees.  Even some women who have augmentation have it.  It is called distortion.  If yours is that severe, talk to your PS and see if he/she has a solution. A woman on another board actually had hers put above the muscle which is not at all common for reconstruction.  I have a recon side and an augmented/lifted side.  Neither of mine distort to the point where they are noticeable if I am clothed.  If I am naked, actually my augmented side pulls upward when I flex. I'm not sure if this is because of the lift that I had or not. My reconstructed side pretty much stays put. You can see the muscle tighten over it but it doesn't pull up like the 'good' side.  Best wishes

I didn't know it had  a name, but I feel like Butterfly8, a real freak show.  I was vacumming in front of a mirrored wall in my dining room and was shocked at how "gross" they looked as I moved my arm.  Creapy.

So this distortion, is it caused by the PS's talent or lack thereof, or is it just bad luck for some of us?

Thanks for the information.  Sammie Kay

P.S. Mine are silicone and were put in after expanders.  My surgery was done Dec.27th 2007.  Mastectomies and expanders done Dec.27th 2006.

When I flex my muscles, it looks weird.

Actually the only complaint I have with the implants I have is the

the distortion of the implant when the muscle flexes.

Does anyone know what holds the implant if you have them

removed and placed on top of the muscle?

Sammie Kay, I THINK it probably has more to do with your anatomy/muscles than the PS's skill but I'm not really sure.  The lack of 'covering' in the case of reconstruction, I would think would play into it too.  It is kind of weird that my augmented side (with covering....read as breast tissue) distorts (squeezes upward) when my reconstructed side (with no breast tissue) really doesn't......that just defies logic!!

Sherry, I'm not sure what holds them....I don't think the woman I am referring to used Alloderm but I'll see what I can find out.  I'll post back if I can find her or her posts.   I do know that hers looked GREAT after the new placement.

Yep, mine flex and jump whenever I engage my pec muscles. Which is just about all the time. And it's why I am limited to no weight lifting, etc right after my exchange.

SammieKay, vacuuming is evil. You should avoid it at all costs. Especially when there's psychological damage involved!! Wink

Question.... I still have my expander (rt mast) and will have my exhange on 5/29.  When I flex my rt pec the expander moves up and around.  When I flex my left pec nothing (but that's my good-natural breast).  Should I expect the same when I get my implant?  It's not painful, just wierd and annoying. Thanks.  Phyllis

Phyllis, not sure about the answer but be SURE you mention it to your PS just incase there is something that can be done about it.  My expander sometimes (mostly in the beginning before it was full) felt like it was riding up....like when your bra rides up.  I took to squeezing the top of mine (like a mother cat picking up a kitten) so that the bottom filled out and soon, it 'dropped' into the pocket and I didn't have that riding up feeling anymore.  Maybe that would help yours...again, you should probably check with your PS.  Best wishes

By the end of my expansion, I really was afraid to do the exchange because my expander looked so good.  So maybe how your muscle was stretched (some women say their expanders are under their arms which would mean the front of the muscle wasn't getting the right stretch and would revert back to it's original 'shape'.....maybe....at least that makes sense to me) decides how much distortion you get.  My slight problem is on my augmented side and I'm thinking it is because my muscle wasn't stretched at all there. I think I'll start squeezing mine down in the pocket when it wants to give me that 'porn star-pushed up' look.  I don't want to squeeze too far though because that's my natural side which has the potential to droop before the other side so maybe mine is a mixed blessing???  Just a few thoughts I had in the shower this morning....I do my best thinking there!!!  Cool

I noticed the 'play' in my boob when I was in the shower.  With the tattoo it is more noticable.  I think of it as 'stupid boob tricks'.

Well this thread is just too funny!!!! I actually discovered that if I flex my biceps (is that the upper arm muscle????) anyway, if I flex my upper arm, my "foobs" flex too. It looks SOOOO funny! Sometimes, I stand in front of the mirror (naked of course!!) and do this for a good laugh! I don't know, it just doesn't bother me at all. There are plenty of worse things to worry about in life!!

PS I love Jade's comment about dancing them to music--that will be my next project!

Okay so now I am feeling freaky cause my implant does not move around - at the gym, pool or vacuuming. It only moves around if actually rotate it around... My PS's assistant did warn me of the possibility especially since I was working out with just a low compression sports bra at the time but I've never noticed this? My implant is small, maybe this is why?

Patience, Well we won't be taking you 'on the road'...LOL!!  You will have to pay admission to the show!  JK....just be glad.  Mine is my good side that moves "north" with certain movements but IF I have a bra  on it doesn't do it.  Right now I have a VERY light weight leisure type bra on and I can flex until the cows come home and I can't get my "porn star push up" to pushup....go figure!  Best wishes!

LOL patience....we'll consider that!!!  I'm still hoping mine will fade a bit more because it is still a little darker than my natural nip.  It also has a dark ring around it that my real one doesn't have so I keep using exfoliating scrub on it in the shower.  I guess I better be careful or I'll have to join your part of the show.  Seriously, my PS told me that if necessary I could have mine touched up....she didn't mention 'touched DOWN'!!!!  Best wishes
