I have to make that decision between mastectomy and lumpectomy. I have bilateral reduction surgery two years ago which now introduces some complications...can I have SNB? what type of reconstruction will work for me. Anyone have experience with this?
Also I'm very interested in the DIEP but I can't seem to find a Dr in NY except out at the end of Long Island. My surgery for the cancer will be in Albany...I was hoping to have it all done at once. Help! Any thoughts?

I can't answer your first question, sorry, but I know there are surgeons in NYC who do the DIEP flap. Also, if you are in Albany you could come to Boston -- there are teams that do the DIEP procedure at both Beth Israel and Brigham and Women's/Dana Farber. Check out Dr. Koumanis at Albany Med. He is relatively new to the area and is doing diep reconstruction. I know a few women who have seen him and are very happy with him. I attended a lecture he gave and thought he seemed very personable and very willing to answer questions. Dx 5/2/2006, IDC, 3cm, Stage IIa, Grade 3, 1/2 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Thanks...I'll check him out. I'll meet again with the general surgeon tomorrow. I'm so confused because it seems to me that mast. is the better medical choice, but lump. seems to be the preferred choice. Not really sure how to read between the lines of what all the drs are saying.; |

I had a mastectomy 2 months after my reduction when the pathologist found a 5mm ILC tumor. I had already had a MS Free Tram on the other side so I chose to go with the one-step implant. Before the surgery, they did do SNB so that is still possible. Good luck! When a woman tells the truth she is creating the possibility for more truth around her. Adrienne Rich
