I was just diagnosed with dcis grade 3. I was going to have lumpectumy with radiation for the treatment but am going to talk to the doctor about a mastectomy. I also have a kidney dieses called mpgn that is very bad. It has been in remission for ten years but am scarred that if I have radiation it could come back. It makes the treatment choice very hard. I am scarred to have a mastectomy but do not want to hurt my kidneys. I think the peace of mind having a mastectomy over lumpectomy and radiation will eventully help with the anxiety at every doctors appointment that I have for my kidneys.Has any one had a mastectomy that could put my mind at ease?

I had a mastectomy the end of Feb due to DCIS in half my breast which than during surgery found IDC also.  I don't reget getting the mastecomy doing the tissue expander at the same time has helped me I almost look like my old self again.  Fom me I love going to the pool and running so I knew that would be something I wanted.  A friend sent me a link showing me the process of tissue expander send me a PM if you want it.

Hi there..I had a mastectomy seven years ago after first having a lumpectomy...I am glad I did..now I wish I had started with it the

first time. But that is my case.you simply must do what you feel most comfortable with

and I know that the deciding time is the hardest...once you have a

treatment plan and start it, things will fall into place...we are all

holding your hand. Please don't feel all alone..

Hi Aurora

I had a single mastectomy fro DCIS March 18. I don't regret it but also didn't have much choice anyway. The surgery wasn't as terrible or difficult as I imagined before hand and recovery has gone better than I expected. I have not done recon and don't know if I ever will.

I can see how your decision is a difficult one but there are many options when considering mastectomy, you can have a new breast made if you choose that but kidney health and function are something that are going to affect your entire wellbeing. Something to discuss thoroughly with your Doc. Together you should know what the best approach is for you to retain optimum health overall for the longterm.

I have had bilateral mastectomies (one for cancer in breast, the other to even me out).  I have no regrets.

Just a note, if you have a lumpectomy, and if you have a recurrence in the breast that turns out to be invasive, you may have to have chemo.  Some of the chemo drugs are not kind to kidneys.

By having a mastectomy, you are reducing the chance of a recurrence in the breast.

it is unreal how this (dcis diagnoses) consumes my thoughts. I was trying to take a nap this afternoon(did not sleep good last night) and all I did was lay there and think about it...am I making the right treatment choice? Whats easiest on my body(kidneys included)?. I asked my kidney doctor (he called me) and the telephone conservation lasted about 1 min. Not alot of information there.Very frustrating. Am going to try and talk to my surgon tomarrow.Alot of questions going on in my mind and its hard to have the doctors not make you feel like they are short on time.(and I'm sure they really are)oh well... thanks for the comments and encouragement!

Hi honey, why don't you get some anti-depressants?  They will help you with this ruminating thinking.  They are not addictive, although you need to get off them slooowly.

I am sure you have been told that you are in no danger of dying.  This is the winning lottery ticket of diagnoses.  If you want more info, get Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, read only the parts about DCIS, the other chapters might scare you.  Knowledge is power.
