I have just been diagnosed with DCIS, stage 0, non-invasive on the left breast. The MRI showed a spot on the same breast. The Dr said there was a 20% chance it was DCIS. Has anyone had this situation? I just got over the shock of being diagnosed with cancer, and expecting a lumpectomy/radiation, when I was dealt this blow. I need to have another biopsy tomorrow, but am now just trying to figure out if I should just have a mastectomy and get it over with.

Start with the biopsy. With the information gotten from that, your oncologist will help you decide decide the best course of treatment. If it's very ER+, it may be kept under control with Tamoxifen. |

It sounds like we are in a very similar situation. I was just diagnosed with DCIS in my left breast with 1mm of invasion. My sister had a double mastectomy about a year ago but the doctor is telling me mine is different. The surgeon and oncologist are recommending removal and radiation and tamoxifin. In my mind I say why take the chance and just have the mastectomy. I am 39 and have three young children I do not want to take the chance of recurrence but then on the other hand am I being to radical. I am very confused!! |

Lori, I would watch for false positives on MRI. I had 3 'questionable' spots on MRI. One turned out to be DCIS the two others were benign. MRI's can't provide any positive diagnosis. Only a biopsy of the area can. Yes, it's a pain in the a** to go back in for more procedures, but I think your surgeon is wise to suggest at least an 80% probability the area will not be cancer. Good luck. Dx DCIS right 9/07 (.5 cm), Dx DCIS left 11/07 (1.5 cm), ER+/PR+, Rads 4/1-5/16

Lori---I would go back for another biopsy---MRIs are notorious for false findings. I've also had 3 suspicious spots on MRI that turned out to be benign. Praying you get good results this time and can go for the lumpectomy/rads/tamox route instead of mastectomy. Anne Dx 9/5/2003, LCIS, Stage 0, 0/0 nodes |
