My sil was diagnosed with IDC 1 cm grade 3 tumor. My question is should her homone receptor status be on this report because I don't see it? Dr. is recommending lumpectomy and radiation. I was concerned that she should have chemo too but from what I've been reading, usually don't do chemo if tumor is 1 cm. What do you ladies think? Thanks, Dianne

The ER and PR receptor status should be on there. Have your SIL call and find out if they are possibly doing further tests. In general, if the tumor is = to 1Cm or greater, chemo is warranted. |

It's a grade thing. I'm between 1 and 2 cm, but I'm grade 1, and, for me, the risk of side effects are greater than the benefit of chemo (Yeah, I got a second opinion). Grades 2 and 3, chemo is more likely to help. Your SIL may wish to get an Oncotype Dx test, which will give her a more specific answer. You'll find LOTS of discussions about this test in this message board. Sue Dx 12/28/2007, IDC, 1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Blue and Sue, Thanks alot. It says on this report that "Ancillary Studies Pending, Addendum Report to follow" so maybe it will be on that one. I have been on the boards for awhile, mostly in the recurrence and mestatic thread. I lost my mother to bc July 1st after 7 years. Still grieving for her and so devastated to learn about my sil. I thought she should have chemo too.... I wish I knew in 2000 when my mother was diagnosed what I know now about bc. I didn't think our family would have to deal with bc anytime soon again. But I'm gonna do my best to help my sil like I did mama. Another question, I have two daughters, 23 and 27. I am so concerned for them, especially my 27 yr old. She takes after my husband's side of the family and since my sil has just been diagnosed and then a maternal aunt on his side has had it twice and then my mother. I'm wondering about the genetic testing..... Thanks again, Dianne |

Call and talk to a genetic counselor. they are very forthcoming with answers to the genetic stuff and will tell you normally over the phone whether its advisable. They'll also do an indepth interview/consult before you get tested, so that you understand everything about it. Follow up will tell you a lot @ your sil's cancer. Have they mentioned doing a lymph node sampling during her surgery? That also will help in deciding whether chemo is needed. All the best to her and to you and your healing from mom's passing. Prayers all around. wishiwere

Wishiwere, she is supposed to have surgery in June and they are going to take lymph nodes. Hopefully she does not have any positive nodes. They have already told her she wouldn't have chemo and that really concerns me but I'm going to wait and see if there is any lymph node involvement. Thanks alot. Dianne |

OK, I don't want to second guess her doctors, but I don't know how they can say now that she won't need chemo if they haven't checked her lymph nodes. The size of the tumor, the LN involvement, the grade...all determine the need for chemo. They need the info on all three things, not two out of three. |

Nancy, the tumor is 1 cm and it is grade 3. That was puzzling to me too. Thanks, Dianne |

Hi Dianne, Was the tumor size determinned by a Biopsy, Mommo or MRI? Or was this from a Lumpectomy. I know tumor sizes can end up larger or even smaller after a Lumpectomy (from the original MRI or Mammo report) My Pathology report did have an Addendum too. And the ER/PR status was in about 5 days after the 1st report...My Her2 came in over 3 weeks later. If its 1cm & grade 3- Id say Chemo would probably be in her future. Im sorry to hear about your Mom, It takes lots of time to heal. Pam Dx 3/7/2008, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/1 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

Hi dear, when I was diagnosed, back in the Stone age, 9 years ago, they usually did not do chemo unless your tumor was 1cm or more and/or if you had positive nodes. But things change quickly in this field. Gentle hugs, Shirlann |

Pam, thanks for the info. the tumor size was after the biopsy. She will have a lumpectomy week after next. Hopefully she will have zero positive nodes. Shirlann, thanks for the encouragement. I hope she doesn't need chemo. We'll just have to Wait and see; the good old waiting game. Dianne |
