Hello
I was wondering if there was anyone online who is suffering from neuropathy under the arm after mastectomy, and what they are doing about it. I have treatment but I am still for something else to make it go away all together. In addition, after completing my breast surgeries and my chemo, and a hysterchtomy, I am now depressed and not handling things as strongly as I did when I was going thru the whole process. Is this happening to anyone also, and what are you doing about it. What about the anxiety of recurrence?
Thanks for any info.

Hi Mari, and welcome. I have underarm neuropathy, it also extends right down to my elbow. I was told it would 'probably' go within 6 months....someone lied !! Here I am , almost 5 years past double mastectomy, and it hasn't really changed much at all. I went for 2 years, complaining, and asking for some help, was told 'it will settle'...it didn't. I had to get snotty in the end, and really pushed for something. I was given Gabapentin, which wasn't very effective, I went with this for about 2 years, had another complain, and was changed to Lyrica, about Christmas time 07. Lyrica was very slightly better, but on the whole, not much. These two drugs sometimes give a very dramatic result for some, just not for me, so you could have a go at either of these, and find one will work well for you. I find its easier to just not use my arm whenever I can, not good, I know, but there doesn't seem to be much else. As you are feeling depressed, and this is a VERY common thing after breast cancer perhaps an anti depressant would do both jobs. I did read that Amytriptiline, a very old anti depressant was being used for neuropathy, with good effect. How far out are you from treatment? If not too far out, it COULD be early days yet, and could have time to settle (it does go completely with some of us) The anxiety of reccurrence is a whole different ball game! We all learn to deal with it, and live along side this in our own way, and at different speeds. This is probably one of the worst aspects of this whole thing. Come back and ask away with your questions, everyone will be pleased to help if they can. Isabella. Dx 5/14/2003, IDC, 1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/26 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Hi, I'm 6 months out, and no relief yet. My pain , burning , and numbness is still with me , also down to the elbow. I got no answers so I went to the neurologist. He did some tests, just to make sure it wasn't from my neck , (which it wasn't), and he has me on cymbalta. Not an ounce of relief yet, it's been over 2 weeks on the stuff. I can't take lyrica, it makes me woozy. I'm seeing him again tues. and he's probably going to increase my dose, we'll see. He said the pain may stay with me forever, if it isn't any better after 6 months. |

Mari - so sorry for this. I had a lymph node dissection after my mast/immed tram since the surgery path came back invasive. I remember moaning during the surgery and hearing "oh! we gotta..." before going back under. That was in April 2004 and I've had unremitting pain ever since. My primary doc has been wonderful in working with me to come up with the mix of drugs that helps me the most, and I've learned on my own that not using my arm and an occasional glass of red wine works almost as well. I am on permanent disability as a result of this pain. You can PM me if you would like and I'll help in any way I can. I'm sorry this is happening to so many of us. If you do an internet search on post mastectomy pain syndrome or post breast treatment pain syndrome you can find a lot of info. Laura from Oregon
