Hi. I am 31 years old and I just found out that I have breast cancer. I am scheduled to have my masectomy this month. I am very scared and undecided about if I should get the silicone breast immediately after surgery or should I get the breast expander? The PS told me I would have to come back several times to get injections and another surgery. I am small chested and was thinking about just getting the silicon the same day. Any suggestions?

Hi Towen, So sorry you are here at such a young age, but you are welcome here and I hope you will find the help and dear friendships I have. I hate to answer a question with a question, however, you may need to give us more info to help guide you. What treatment are you having after your mastectomy? Radiation or chemo or both? Radiation may make expander more difficult. How far do you live from the PS? I was not given the choice of immediate recon and had expanders. The expander visits were quick-just check the healing, inject some fluid and off I went. Yes, there was some discomfort as the skin stretched. I only had 3-4 fills. The exchange surgery itself was not too bad. I had pain pump and absolutely no pain from that surgery at all. I am sure more people will give their opinion but can definitley see the attraction of 1 day reconstruction. Good luck to you- Please ask any questions you have- you will get wonderful guidance here Susan Dx 8/8/2005, IDC, , Stage IIb, Grade 2, 1/8 nodes, ER-/PR-, HER2- |
