I'm a newbie here.  A few weeks ago I found a lump in the areola portion of my left breast.  Because it was a week away from my period, I decided to wait and see if it changed any.  When it did not, I scheduled my yearly physical and told her about it.  She not only felt that one, but found another area of concern in my right breast.  I went for my mammogram today.  According to the tech, my breast tissue is very dense which she said made it hard to see anything.  They sent me for an ultrasound.  She first did my right breast that 'I' could not see anything on, but that doesn't mean anything.  On my left breast I could def. see an area that appeared dark and def. different from the areas around it.  I think she must have measured it because it looked like how they measure a baby's head when you are pregnant....I don't know any other way to describe it.  I really don't know what to expect.  Any advice to calm my nerves would be greatly appreciated.  I'm thinking I should hear from it in a day or two.

Thanks so much,

Kel

The dark areas on ultrsounds are usually cysts. They do measure them and then they "map" them for further reference. Depending on size, etc, they may try to aspirate it for fluid and if it looks suspicious they send it to pathology. I have LOTS of cyts, so my ultrasounds take a while. Hope it turns out to be OK.

Kel,

I know you're probably driving yourself crazy right now with all of the "what-if's".  Most likely it is just a cyst that will require some aspiration.  That is what I had, actually quite a few of them. I worried myself for an entire week thinking I would be positive. I had aspirations and biopsies performed.  Biopsy was B9.  The aspiration is nothing-very quick and painless.  I will keep you in my prayers for good news!

Hi Kel,

I also agree with the others here. I have a similar experience - similar mammos, and similar ultrasound results. I think your doctor would have advised you to get a biopsy if he or she felt the need to check it out more. Mine did, and I got a core biopsy. Now I'm playing another waiting game. I was supposed to get them today, but nobody called (nor called back when I did). So I'll try again tomorrow.

It sure was a happier experience when my other ultrasound (four years ago) revealed a baby boy. But as I keep on reminding myself, I should not stress if I do not have a basis. No news is not necessarily bad news.

Hang in there.
