Hey LE-ers

I have bi-lat LE. It is worse on the left side where I had my original cancer in 2001.

Last week I was putting leaves in a garbage bag. Not a lot of leaves. No heavy raking, they were already in a pile.

I was wearing long pants, socks, sneakers, I had both arms wrapped with leather gardening gloves on. Afterwards, I did not have any cuts or scratches. I did an le massage when I was taking my shower when I came inside when I was done.

Fast forward to 2 days later...

I have a raging fever, incredible pain and wound up in the hospital with cellulitis. I am still sick. I may lose my tissue expander.

How the hell did this happen????

Oh darn, I'm so sorry this happened to you.  I have been lucky so far and haven't gotten it, apparently even to much sun on the arm can cause it.  I hope that they find something that will help drain it and stop the pain as fast as possible.  I'm so sorry Gina. Damn.

g, I am SOOO sorry Frown! I'm going to be praying you heal promptly and well and don't lose the expander. This makes me just sick.Cry

Did this come on really suddenly? Did you have antibiotics on hand or get some quick, or did it take awhile to figure out what was going on? Had you been traveling recently (the last week or so)? How long were you in the hospital? Tell me they didn't put an IV in either arm, yes?Surprised

As to how this happened...g, there's such a thing as a spontaneous infection (no skin break, no obvious precipitating event) with lymphedema, but it's more common in women who have never done a therapy intensive or whose LE is out of control (as yours obviously wasn't). All I can say is, keep a careful watch on this after it heals, see if your doc will give you antibiotics to keep on hand, and if it happens again go see an infectious disease specialist. In some cases a long term low-dose antibiotic regimen is advisable for avoiding future bouts of the rotten stuff.

How's the pain level? Please rest up and take good care of you. I feel certain something gooey and chocolatey would improve the situation, and if we lived closer I'd sure as heck bring it over. Do please keep us posted.

My prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. I had a horrific cellulits and an arm that looked liked an elephant a few years ago. I never thought that it would go down but the IV antibotics blasted it!!!

Good luck to you and keep the faith!

Hi everyone,

I woke up this morning and the pain is finally subsiding a bit. I also have a more natural, human color to my skin.

I never heard of spontaneaous infection.

My PS said that because my skin is radiated and I have a foreign object in there I am more prone to things like this happening.

It came on suddenly. I woke up feeling like my skin was inside out and all my nerve endings were exposed. Then it started to concentrate in the axilla and around the tissue expander. It was then that I called my PS and asked him if I should go ahead and take one of the Levaquin I have in the house.

I did and then a few hours later my temp spiked and I felt about as bad as I ever felt.

The next morning I went to the ER and they gave me IV antibiotics and I got myself released because we had a big family wedding that day. I missed the ceremony but made it to the reception. I really don't want to miss any joyful events so it was important to me.

My wbc has gone down finally. So this is just the residual infection working its way out. But I have to say, this hurt more than my surgery did.

I have been very unhappy with my LE place. In fact, just last week, before this happened, I complained to them because my arms have not gone down one bit since I started last summer. I asked for sleeves and they said their sleeve provider doesn't accept my insurance and I would have to "let my fingers do the walking" in the phone book and find my own place.

The other LE place I went to before my cancer returned had a custom made sleeve made for me with no trouble at all. I don't even know what to order.

This whole thing has been such a shock to me. I know when I have been bad and not as careful as I should be. But I have been extraordinarily careful and especially last week because I wanted my arms to be as small as possible for the wedding.

Thanks for all your support and for educating me on this. I had no idea.

Love,

Gina,

This makes me angry.  You did nothing out of the ordinary, were bandaged and still got cellulitis.  Being denied what you need to manage your lymphedema (and still be reasonably normal) is really the final straw.  In 2006, after four years of being covered, I was denied coverage of a custom made glove.  I appealed and lost.  (The benefit trust agreed with the provider whose guidelines were written by an orthopedic surgeon!)  The next year, it was covered.  (My garments are covered through a "benefit trust" so my legal rights to appeal are limited.) Be careful--none of the company's "authorized" venders could sell custom gloves so I was also charged with "using an unauthorized provider."  It was a real no-win situation.

Inadequate coverage for lymphedema is a problem with the medical system in the U.S. and won't change until the system changes or we speak out.  Somewhere on the boards, there is some excellent advice from Binney re: drafting a letter appealing insurance coverage.  All I can say is "fight this."  Legislators pass laws mandating treatment for breast cancer and its complications so it is up to us to explain to our elected officials that the insurance providers are not in compliance.  This may mean drafting new regulations to ensure compliance.  Use your anger.  (Though it is damn difficult to type when you are bandaged, you might mention that typing, at least for those of us with hand swelling can be a risky activity.)

Sorry to hear of your troubles, nosurrender. Hoping for a straight forward recovery.

One just can never know when a skin microfissure, which can't be seen, may allow in a cellulitis causing bug. Scary. Regretfully, MRSA and now C. difficile have made their selves known, so be careful around hospitals if visiting, and use lots of bleach at home and if possible there. The antibacterial/viral hand washes don't deter them.

Sue and all said it on our garments: it's often a fight for what is mere decency and preventative action for LE and cellulitis.

This must be what our war veterans are feeling and doing too, as they await their prosthesis. How sad.

Sending good healing your way,
Tender

Even the tiniest cut to the skin almost invisible to our eyes such as a rose thorn hit, cat scratch or tiny finger nail cut can result in cellulitis.

An almost invisible tiny finger nail cut from a nurse put my husband in the hospital for a week with severe cellulitis.

It's scary stuff.

Gina,

I'm glad you are doing better. I think it's outrageous that your LE place just sent you off on your own. As if you don't have enough to contend with!

I hope you can find another place that is more responsive to LE needs. Sounds like they just can't be bothered. How do they stay in business?

LE Hugs to your continued recovery.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to report I am MUCH better.

The skin is a human color and the redness and pain has really improved. I have a lot of fluid collected under the expander but that will be taken care of next week when I get my exchange done.

Tender and Sahalie, that is something that is so frustrating - a microscopic scratch or in your husband's case Sahalie, a scratch from his nurse?

I do use purell religiously. I keep a big bottle in my car. and I bleached down the whole house this weekend.

I will take your advice Sue and Grace and fight for my sleeves!

BTW-yes they did put the iv in my other arm in the er. Even after I gave them the whole speech. The new one they are countering with is that if they don't add fluids to the drip, then the risk is reduced.  I know. there I am for an infection on the other side and they say fluids from a saline drip will cause LE.

Thanks again for all your help!

Good morning, g!

Whew! Sounds lots better. I've been down with flu and wondering how you were, glad to get back and see progress!

Now to tackle the sleeve snafu. Good grief! Not a bit helpful.

Your exchange surgery is next week?! Rest up, girl! Prayers and (((((HUGS))))) coming your way! Keep us posted,

G- I'm so sorry you've had these problems.  It makes me so crazy mad when people cannot get the care they need.  I will be thinking about you and hoping that your surgery goes well and that you can rest up and feel like being your own advocate for good care and compression garments.  If I had the cash, I would start a support and advocacy organization for LE patients.

There is a feature on NBC evening news this week about "mystery" ailments.  I wonder if they will cover LE....?
