Hey LE-ers,

Well I was supposed to get my exchange surgery today and was in the OR when the doc took one look at my skin and said I can't have my tissue expanders out and the implants in because the infection is still affecting the area and causing an "inflammatory process" and lots of contracture.

LE- who knew that cancer was not the only thing that keeps giving? LE is forever too.

Damn I am disappointed!

Thanks for helping me through this rough patch.

love

Oh man, g, I can just taste the disappointment. In fact, "disappointment" is not enough of a word to carry it. I am soooooo sorry.

Is there any way I can help shoulder this? Anything. Let me know,

I am so sorry - there's nothing worse than being at the starting line and then having the whole race scrubbed!

Are you on an antibiotic, and when are you following up?

Dear g,

I'm truly sorry this transpired today for you. Anticipating the implant exchange and being done for the known future is something I looked forward to, as I know you and others have. To get this close and be pulled away is unfair.

In the end though, we want you here with us, or mastering your other site. So it took swallowing today for both you and your surgeon to walk away, but a decision that is clearly with your best interests at heart.

You've had a rough go of it, g. I'm in admiration of your fortitude through this all. Now it's on to determine the infection details and plan. Please pamper yourself with lots sleep, an increase in protein, some vitamin C and lots of D (5000 IU would be good, it boosts one's immune system!).

Gina,

I'm so disappointed for you. This will get better, though, and the exchange WILL happen. You've done everything right and you don't deserve this delay. Did the ps say how long he thought it might be?

Thank you everyone

My PS said that he didn't see any active signs of infection, but what he was seeing was the effects of it. My skin is swollen and I have a lot of capsular contracture.  My left breast, where I had the infection, is smooshed flat because of this. So I have swelling on the side, tenderness underneath and my muscle smooshing it.

I wish he could just open me up, cut out the scar tissue and the capsulation and call it a day- but he is afraid I am not sufficiently healed from the infection yet.

Also, if I wrap my arm, my breast gets even bigger. It is like all my LE fluid is draining into that breast.

I am tentatively rescheduled for June 30th. We will see what happens!!

Thanks again,

love,

g, good morning!

Hope today's better, but I gotta say I marvel at your bounce-back capacity. Rubber woman! Wish you didn't have to keep bouncing.

On the Advocates for Lymphedema site we've been discussing cellulitis aftermath lately. Seems the infection can be gone but an underlying inflammatory response may continue for a bit, causing swelling, redness or pinkness, and tenderness to the touch. But both massage (if it's tolerated) and compression can be used at this stage (since the infection is no longer active) and will help reduce both the swelling and the inflammation.

That said, I have the same problem with arm wraps (or too-tight sleeves) causing chest swelling. Maybe try wrapping your arm a bit looser for now, and use more compression (a swell spot? a chip bag? a "chocolate bar"?) on your breast if it doesn't cause more pain.

June 30th will dawn infection-free and inflammation-free, and you'll sail through the surgery and recovery, all the while doing a Snoopy dance to celebrate a fantastic finish! Yes!

You'll get thereSmile,

Binney
