Topic: Is It Possible To Get Lymphedema From An Excisional Biopsy?

Geesh, we face so many scarey things when we go through the diagnosis process! I'm really sorry you're at this "waiting" stage -- it's gotta be the worst part of this journey. I'll be praying that your biopsy results are beautifully benign!

Lymphedema following a biopsy, with no nodes purposely removed, is really not much of a worry. Still, if you want to be extra careful, you can follow the Risk Reduction guidelines from the National Lymphedema Network here: www.lymphnet.org.  They're simple and sensible, and they may give you a sense of protection after your procedure.

As for chronic breast pain after a biopsy, that's gotta be really rare. Our doctors always have to tell us all the remote possibilities in an effort to protect themselves. And our job is to hear it, take whatever steps we can to reduce the risk, and then get on with our lives. So after your biopsy, do be careful to follow the after-care instructions that the doctor or nurse gives you, and do take your time and be good to yourself while you're recovering. But then put that part behind you and be ready to move beyond this difficult time and back into the swing of your life.

I had an exc. biopsy after being advised to wait several months. Finally it was driving me nuts and I had it done, got the results and ended up with 2 more surgeries.  Less than a year later I had LE from the lymph nodes removed.

I have heard that you can get LE from ANY type of surgery (or trauma to the body) but it doesn't sound like yours is high risk. If you want peace of mind, have the biopsy done. Good luck!
