When I was diagnosed with IBC, Stage III, grade 3, 6cm tumor, and after surgery finding out that I had 21 pos. nodes, I never thought I'd be here one year later. My anniv. date is May 23. Yet, here I am, feeling good. Scans are scheduled for the end of this month. Got my fingers crossed. My best to all of you Stage 3 ladies for a long life. (Everyone else too)

Congratulations on your 1st year anniversary, crossing fingers for you scans. Your present circumstances don't determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary! Hey, does anyone know the difference between stages IIIa and IIIb? I've searched and searched and can't seem to find an answer. Thanks! |

Shrink, Congrats on your one-year anniversary! Time flies when you're having fun, eh? I just passed my two-year anniversary and started off with a similar diagnosis--3 cm tumor and 25 lymph nodes. I had a PET scan a month ago and all is NED. Hope yours goes well, too! Birki, Yeah, the whole Stage III thing is very confusing because different organizations have different definitions. By some accounts, I would be IIIc because I had more than 10 affected lymph nodes. Some cancer organizations don't even have a Stage IIIc, however, and don't subdivide by node number. This is how breastcancer.org defines it: Stage IIIA describes invasive breast cancer in which:
This stage describes invasive breast cancer in which a tumor of any size has spread to the breast skin, chest wall, or internal mammary lymph nodes (located beneath the breast right under the ribs, inside the middle of the chest). By this definition I would be Stage IIIa, but my onc has me down as IIIb. I've heard that some doctors like to use the higher subdivision as a way to get insurance companies to pay for treatment. Congrats Shrink on your one year anniversary!! I am with you, after my diagnosis I really didn't think I'd be here in a year. It will be 3 years in August since my diagnosis w/ IBC. I am so happy that you are doing well. Prayers for clear scans at the end of the month. Hugs, Lexi |

Amy, Thank you for the info. It's very helpful. I normally try not to concentrate too much on all of the "stats" because after awhile they can get in the way of staying positive and focusing on a full recovery. However, I've never understood that particular rating system. Thanks again! |

Naomi, What do you mean by "the biggest stuff was left over in my arm"? I think I also remember that you said you were a runner. Am I right about that? Thanks Bobbie Every day is a blessing...

Congrats shrink! I didn't think I was going to be here, either, but I've definitely had my one year anniversary. I'm not sure when that is, as I was diagnosed 11/06, but my mastectomy was 2/07 with chemo and rads following. We made it through the first one! I'll see ya at the next one, hopefully!
