In early April I was dx with DCIS in one quaderant at l and 3 o'clock near my cleavage, Stage 0, grade 2.  It has been recommended by my BS to have a masectomy with DIEP reconstruction which is being scheduled for the middle/end of June. One PS doesn't want to do the operation because I have a BMI of 30 so we are searching for another. Have any of you ever waited several months to have DCIS removed? I'm wanting to wait until Sept. I look forward to any suggestions or comments.  Thanks.

Hi - well they do say that you have "time" with the dx of DCIS to really look around and get everything set up but whether that is 4 months - to me that seems long and I would be uncomfortable.  But I'm sure it's doable especially if the DCIS is not wide spread and since it is grade 2 it isn't considered to be agressive.  That being said I was dx Jan 1, 2007 and I was on every nerve until March 26th 2007 for the bi-lateral (with immediate reconstruction).  If it is not wide spread and you are not a nervous wreck I imagine your docs will tell you it's ok to wait.

One more thing - I was initially dx with grade 3 but when I had Vanderbuilt do a second opinion on it they said grade 1 - finally pathology at the surgery was DCIS Stage 0 grade 3 so although you have a dx of grade 2 that can change at final pathology...

Best of luck and I hope your results are incredible!!!

Best

Hello!

I was diagnosed on 6/12/07, and had my mastectomy exactly 3 months later on 9/12/07.  I had 2 biopsies in between, and the coordination of the two surgeons scheduled took up some time as well (and one was going on vacation too! - the nerve!  :o) ).   DCIS is not life threatening, so it's not an emergency situation, but if you're like me, the waiting was the WORST and I just wanted to get on with things!   I don't think waiting til September would be a problem.   I often wondered how long I'd had DCIS, maybe years!

I hear the DIEP flap is a great way to go.....I hope you are successfuly in finding a surgeon!   Best wishes to you........

I went to see my medical oncologist for a second opinion- because I may not be able to take hormone therapy because I got breast cancer with evista which is very similar to tamoxiflen and I have lupus and crohn's- the newer hormone drugs may cause a flare up so a suggestion was made by the oncologist to have a mastectomy on the other breast to prevent me from developing invasive breast cancer. I decided against that-don't want to have surgery again unless it is abolutely necessary
