Has anyone who has had neoadjuvant chemo experienced pain in the breast or underarm area? Is this good or bad? Killing cancer or growing cancer?
At various times after my treatments, I've had dull aches in spots that are effected. I never remember to ask my onc because they're not very strong, and not constant. (Out of feel...out of mind, LOL)
Any feedback would be welcomed.

Yes I had some achy pain in the larger tumor area. We were shrinking the tumor with chemo prior to surgery. My tumor shrunk from 7cm to less than 2cm from the chemo. This I believe helped my surgeon get clear margins with my mascectomy. I had to keep a small pocket size notebook and still do to jot things down. My memory is shot to hell :) Good Luck! Dear Nancy, Hi again! Yes, yes, yes! Every blasted time I have chemo, I experience days of pain to the tumor site in the breast, as well as in the huge axillary lymph node that was also biopsied and showed positive for cancer spread. I am assuming the pain indicates the tumor is "protesting" being told to get the hell out (sort of like the green mucus man in the TV ad for Mucinex) because my mass is shrinking, as is the axillary node. To be on the safe side, you need to ask your oncologist (and I should do the same). But I'll bet you anything it's the cancer protesting and reacting the attack -- after all, it is made up of living cells. Love, Annie Tumor Breath |

Hey, guys, here's my theory: Those pains are screams of agony from all those nasty tumor cells that are suffering death throes from the chemo. Take that! And that! And, THAT!!! Hmmmm .... I like it. Maybe this time, pain is good? Do check with the onco, though. otter [Edit: Annie, I can't get that damn song out of my head, and it's your fault!] Dx 1/14/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage I, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Just chiming in here -- ask your doctors what they think, but I think the pain may also be evidence of the "clean-up crew" -- different types of white cells, macrophages, etc. flocking to the scene to cart away the dead tumor cells. (Macrophage literally means "big eater" -- it's a big white cell whose job is to scavenge for dead cells, engulf them and become eliminated -- usually through our normal pathway for "elimination" of solid waste! The macrophage is scavenger and disposable-biohazard-containment-receptacle all in one.) Dx 3/9/2007, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 2, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

I love all the images. I pictured the wrecking crew of chemo drugs slugging away at the nasties. I will be having some follow up tests (MRI and another PET) in the next two weeks, so they'll tell the story about the destruction. I can tell there have been changes...but who knows if they're enough? I don't trust U/S since the one I had in Feb said the tumor was 3.4 cm but the PET scan a couple of weeks later said it was 6.4 cm. So we're going to compare PET to PET. Jeeze Louise, I hope the thing has withered like a you-know-what in a cold shower. All this loss of taste and hair can't be for naught! That would be unbearable. |

Nancy, I also had breast pain with neo adj chemo but I also did a have a biopsy during which my surgeon ended removing some of my tumor 3 days before my 1st chemo. So I could not tell if my pain was from more cancer growing, or the cancer cells protesting the chemo and the remaining tumor dying (I still have plenty of cancer left in the breast) or recovery from the biopsy which ended up being somewhat of a lumpectomy. So I have no answers for you except to say that yes I had it too but do not know why. That said I am now done with 5 chemo's and do not have pain anymore in the breast. Hopefully, your MRI and PET will confirm that the pain was the tumor dying. I also do not trust u/s. My u/s showed it to be only 2.5 cms! Well, all I can say is it must have been killing pains, because my MRI from Monday showed no trace of the tumor! Sheesh, it was 6.4 cm! The radiologist asked my onc, "How did you do that?" There's proof positive that chemo works, for ya! I just hope it is as effective on those little cells that have broken away and started to congregate in other areas. |

Hi I am starting adj chemo May 20. You made me laugh. I am a little nervous about all the meds but am trying to calm down and focus on bringing in food and supplies to cope and camp out for a few days for round one of four. My SNB was negative so we are working toward a lumpectomy.Feel positive , have a great medical team, but worry about some of it. Go with the flow I guess. I am amazed how may women have this. W |

I'm resurrecting this thread from May, because I have been having pain in the tail of my not-yet-removed cancer breast. The tail is the part under your arm, just before your armpit. It aches, and if I press on it, it hurts. No palpable lump or thickening. And sometimes, I feel the ache move down the underside of my arm. Sometimes it feels like a nerve buzz...you know, when someone has hit your nerve taking blood. Anyone have anything similar with their neoadjuvant treatment? I'm about four weeks from my last neo treatment, and won't have surgery for another three weeks. Adjuvant chemo won't be for three weeks after that. Before this bc I'd just say, "Must have been the way I slept last night" or "Must have bumped into something" but you KNOW how this disease changes your whole perspective. |

Nanc, Sorry I didn't reply earlier I'm still figuring out how to navigate this site. I am 2 yrs out and still experience pain in my underarm/breast area. I attribute it to the surgeries, radiation and basiclly the disruption to my body's systems. It usually goes away for a little while anyway :) A lot of times I can blame it on lifting something I wasn't supposed to or marathon laundry sessions. What else can you do ? Life and chores goes on. I don't know if I will ever lose the fear of an ache or pain. I guess for right now I'm just trying to enjoy the summer with my family (my favorite season) Take care, carolyn Dx 11/5/2006, ILC, 6cm+, Stage IIIc, Grade 3, 3/15 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

petelzmom, well, I'm post surgery now (bilat mx) and the pain is a different thing altogether. Now I know what's causing it...the removal of breast and lymph nodes. Things are achy now, which is understandable. Tylenol achy so it's manageable. |
