Hello everyone!

I had my bi-monthly checkup today and talked at length with the Nurse Practitioner at the cancer center, mainly about some issues with depression I am having right now.  The depression came on fairly suddenly-- I was sailing right along after radiation, then bam it hit-- and she said that was exactly typical of BC-related depression.  She suggested three things that would help: Exercise, Anti-depressant medication, and Psychotherapy (I don't even know what that is!)  Well, the exercise is a no-brainer-- I definitely need it, but I am not sure my insurance will pay for psychotherapy, so I went with the A-D in the form of Effexor.  Has anyone out there taken Effexor and have you had success with it?  I am starting out on a very low dose and working up to increase.  The NP also said it would help with hot flashes and night sweats, which is a BIG plus!  Anyone had experience with psychotherapy?  What is it, exactly?

THANKS, HUGS, and best regards to all!

Mary Jo

I took it, in low doses only, to combat my hot flashes and night sweats -- it worked really well for those indeed with no other side effects.

Not sure if it is an effective antidepressant but just wanted to share my positive experience anyway.

Good luck!

Hi Karen,

THANK YOU so much for your input!  I am so glad to hear Effexor worked for you and you didn't suffer side effects-- that's very encouraging!  How long did it take for the Effexor to start working for you?  The NP said about 2-3 weeks, but I'm hoping for quicker results Smile

And also, thank you so much for the Pink Ribbon Review website link!  What a great site and I'm looking forward to reading more on there.

Hi Mary Jo - I am taking Effexor - initially started for night sweats. It has helped tremendously with the night sweats. I didn't think I was  depressed, but since taking Effexor my mood is definitely better and I feel like I am dealing with all aspects of my life better. I am taking 37.5 mg. One thing I found - you may get mild nausea initially. I take mine at night so I can "sleep" through the nausea. After your body gets used to the Effexor - the nausea goes away - I have no problems now.

Hope it works well for you.

Deb

Hi Deb and thanks so much for your help!  I had almost forgotten that my NP did mention the nausea and she also told me to take it at night-- glad you reminded me and so glad to hear that works for you!  I never thought I'd look forward to taking a medicine, but I am so looking forward to getting rid of the night sweats!

Hi Blue:

I've been taking Effexor 37.5mg since December.  I was really depressed and it helped tremendously.  I do still have some sweats but not too often.  Psychotherapy involves speaking with a trained psychotherapist who will listen to your fears, saddness and frustration, provide support and information. Since I was a therapist myself, I heartily recommend it as a safe place to land.

Hi Shrink and thanks very much for your input!  I am so glad to hear the Effexor has helped you a lot.  How long did you take it before you saw an improvement?

I really appreciate your info about psychotherapy.  Is a psychotherapist like a psychologist or a psychiatrist?  (I am trying to find out if my insurance will provide coverage and so far not found any info re: psychotherapists, only psychologists and psychiatrists.) And how many visits are normally required for some good results?

Again thanks and hugs!

Hi Mary Jo,

I started on Effexor XR (extended release) in March.  I had reconstruction on 2/4/08, and during and after the healing process, I was feeling depressed.  My oc stated, once the sun started shining and I was back to my normal running workout, I would feel better.  But I didn't want to wait for that.  She put me on the effexor xr 75mg, but my insurance would not cover it, so they gave me the generic at a 37.5 dosage 2 times a day. Those pills killed my stomach, and made me feel nauseaus.  I went to my family doctor, and he gave me samples of the effexor xr...what a difference!! I can tolerate them with no problems!  I take one in the evening.  Now my insurance will cover the scrip, since I already tried the generic and it didn't work for me.

I love the way I feel now.  I don't feel depressed at all, and I don't let little things bother me they way they ALWAYS did..haha.

Also, since I am on tamoxifin, they really help with the hot flashes and night sweats.

Good luck to you.  I am calling it my miracle drug! I am back to running and now I am feeling 110% better!

Hugs,

Lisa

Thanks, Lisa--  I am glad to read about another big score for Effexor!  And I am so glad you are feeling great now and back to running!  As much as I detest taking medicine, I can't wait until I get this stuff in my system.  Hubby and I went hiking in the woods today, and normally I find such peace and joy there, but instead I felt like I was standing in the middle of the Wal-mart parking lot-- it was that exciting.  Now I really realize that I have a depression problem, though I don't think it's severe, it's definitely not the norm for me.  I could tolerate the hot flashes if I had to, but not the "down" and "apathy" feelings that I have had lately.  I haven't picked up my prescription yet at the pharmacy, but I believe I'm getting the generic-- hope it works but if not, I'll know to ask for the brand name in the xr.

Thanks again Lisa! (I love your signature line)

Hi Mary Jo - I was started with "regular" Effexor - made by very nauseated - switched to XR and was better - could tolerate the nausea until my body got used to it.

I really do feel better emotionally since starting Effexor - family also says I am doing better. I truly hope you have the same results. It is so important to find some mental relief from everything we are dealing with - get back to enjoying what is important.

Take care

Deb

I have been taking Effexor xr for a few months now and it does work well. I didn't really think I was depressed but instead described my symptoms as racing thoughts and not being able to sleep. The effexor helped alot.  It does take a few weeks to work.  I just started on the tamoxifen so perhaps the reason I am not experiencing hot flashes or night sweats is because I am already on effexor?

Good luck with all of this!!!!

i took effexor, among many other anti-depressants. it helped for awhile. the key is to take it regular, same time everyday and give it 4-6 weeks to feel the benifits. if i missed one day or even took it more than 8hrs different than normal, i felt the difference. good luck and if it dosent help, there are many others!! the bad part is the time it take to see if it is really going to work.

I choose prozac over effexor a few years ago because effexor does have the need to be dosed at the same time each day without fail or you can get some side effects like nausea and dizziness. At the low doses for hot flashes has anyone noticed this?

Mary Jo,

Your welcome.  I really do hope you find relief of your feelings with the effexor.  I know exactly what you mean, about not finding pleasure in things you normally did.  I was feeling just like that.  I also had no get up and go.  So a few weeks (it didn't take me long at all to feel the effects) on this drug and I felt like a totally different person.  Like I said the generic bothered my stomach terribly.  You could also ask your doc for some samples of the XR, mine gave me about 1 months worth!  People at work were telling me that I looked so happy, and had a glow.  That itself made me feel so much better.

Pick up your scrip and get started on it..let me know how you are doing.

I am glad you like my signature line.  The first part...worry is for shit...is what my "Baba" (grandmother) used to say. She was from the Ukraine, and she spoke very little English.  But that was her way of telling us not to worry about things.  I thought it was cute.  The second part is what one of my very dear g/f's kept telling me while I was going through my chemo.

I love your avatar..is that your grandson? I see your signature line..say's Mason's granny.

Take care, and let me know how you are doing.

xoxo

Lisa

Hello ladies!

Thanks so much for your info about the Effexor.  I finally took my first one last night, and I did get the brand name in the XR.  I didn't notice any nausea yet, but I woke up a couple of times during the night with heart palpitations-- which is nothing new for me-- that's been my worse menopause symptom.  And it may have been stress too, plus I had my Herception treatment yesterday, so I'm not giving up on the Effexor.  (When I say stress, it could be from having to pay $50 co-pay each for two bottles of the brand name drug-- a lower dose for a week and higher dose after that Surprised )

Did any of you feel different with your first dose?  I am on 37.5 for one week, then go up to 75, and that makes me a little nervous.

Lisa, that is indeed my grandson in my avatar.  He is 5 months old now and is growing so fast!  They live two hours away and I get to see him this weekend!  yippee!  What a cute story about your signature line!

Again thanks and hugs to all of you! I will let you know how I'm doing with the Effexor and probably have more questions for you.

Hi Mary Jo,

I've been on Effexor XR since last fall, and I noticed an almost immediate difference in my mood - much better.  I was very emotional, the smallest things would stress me out and bother me etc.  I started at the 37.5 dose, I take it in the morning.  I started taking the 75 dose a couple of months later, as my onc. said I would get the added benefit of reducing the hot flashes/night sweats at the 75 dose - and he was right.  I could not believe how those horrible night sweats  ( and I mean dripping) were almost totally gone after I started the 75 g. dose.

I still feel like "me" only calmer and not as anxious.  I started feeling better almost immediately, even at the 37.5 dose - within 10 days of starting it.

Hello ladies,,,,,,,,,I usually post in the chemo 07 group,,,,,,,but saw this one related to effexor.  I started taking it about 5 weeks ago,,,started out on the low dose then increased to the 75.  My hot flashes were awful thats why I am taking it.  I have noticed a slight decrease,,,,but my onc also suggested for me to take some Vit E too.  So thats what I have been doing for a couple of weeks now.  She told me to increase my effexor to double the 75,,,,,,but shoot,,,,,,,I just dont know if I want to even go there on that.  So I talked to her and I will continue with the 75 and Vit E and see if that works.  They seem to be less,,,,,but not gone all together.  O well,,,,,,,,I guess I will give it more time.  Interesting reading what all you ladies have to say about effexor though.  Thank you.  I will just be patient, huh?

Take care,,,,,,,,,Cindy

Cindy,

I just wanted to chime in to tell you I still get the occasional hot flash during the day, but I have no intention to go higher on the Effexor XR than the 75 g. I'm on.  I have heard that taking 400 units of Vitamin E/day can help with the flashes.  I will ask my onc. about that at my 3 month check up.  I have read that that Vitamin E can cause blood thinning (I think), so that should be addressed as well.

It's always something, isn't it?
